Fighting Trailer

Yesterday we debuted a first look at two new photos from Dito Montiel's Fighting, about the world of underground street fighting. Today we have the first trailer and it looks pretty badass. Well, it does look kind of cheesy, but thanks to Terrence Howard and even Channing Tatum, I've got a feeling this might not be as bad as it seems at first glance. Too bad it's not rated R though, because now we know the violence is going to be toned down. This trailer would've been a lot better if it didn't have a terrible voiceover (that obviously isn't Don LaFontaine). Either way, give it a shot, maybe it will be a great movie in the end.

Small-town boy Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) has come to New York City with nothing. Barely earning a living selling counterfeit goods on the streets, his luck changes when scam artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard) sees that he has a natural talent for streetfighting. When Harvey offers Shawn help at making the real cash, the two form an uneasy partnership.

As Shawn's manager, Harvey introduces him to the corrupt bare-knuckle circuit, where rich men bet on disposable pawns. Almost overnight, he becomes a star brawler, taking down professional boxers, mixed martial arts champs and ultimate fighters in a series of staggeringly intense bouts. But if Shawn ever hopes to escape the dark world in which he's found himself, he must now face the toughest fight of his life.

Fighting is both written and directed by Dito Montiel, of only A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints previously. The script was co-written by Montiel and newcomer Robert Munic, of a few episodes of "The Cleaner" to his name. Rogue Pictures will debut Fighting in theaters on April 24th this year.

Bad casting. The dude from Step Up looks so out of place, just because he looks gheto doesn't mean he looks like someone who can fight, and can take a hit, seriously, look at him.

Hmmm... Netflixer for sure. Not impressed. Looks like the 8 Mile of MMA.

wow they remade 'never back down' already? Terence Howard looks and sounds more bored than usual!

pfffff! with Alex, when he sees a closed fist or any action sequence for that matter, he'll love it... but that's just him i guess... glad his not into politics otherwise, he'll be looking for action somewhere else, starting in iraq... then pakistan... then... then... who knows? and watch it in his own private viewing room like a kid drooling over his new found video game... this movie is nothing but a fruit juice we've always known, place in a different glass added with more sugar but it's the same fruit juice... nothing new.

The movie actually doesn't look bad. Lionheart and Never Back Down put together. The only thing that ruins it for me is Terrence Howard. I don't find him a very good actor. Alot has to do with his voice.

The dude is from Stomp the Yard.

poltRgYst on Jan 8, 2009

I like Channing he's a good actor this could be good, and I just hope Channing doesn't screw up chances to branch out into bigger and better films. and the movie needs a score like what stomp the yard did, a theme that isn't all Rap, and R&B. Acoustic and dramatic not some main stream rap. That usually kills a movie because not everybody is into that genre of music.

Didn't JCVD do this movie already?

the girl's name is Zulay Henao which is weird, cuz imdb doesnt have her listed, and her name is the same in real life as it is in the movie and i watched this trailer twice. "badass" wasnt even a word that popped in my head, in a positive light anyway this movie looks like it will suck...a lot

Josh on Jan 8, 2009

15

actually, it does have her listed, but it's not near the top as they normally do with major characters in the films

Any1 know the track that plays near to the end? sounds like mike shinoda thnx in advance. btw the movie looks ok

looks quite badass at the end there - shame the story looks like every other movie of its type.

I could be wrong but didn't JCVD do a movie with the exact same plot??

Damn looks good, whats the song at the end of the trailer though? the rap one? Anyone know?

Matt on Jan 8, 2009

21

Eh doesnt look half bad...like #2 said does look like 8 mile with a MMA twist...oh and #1 what alot of people dont know about Channing Tatum is that is skilled in Kung Fu...he was into that and dance before his acting career...Just a lil tidbit to add in

Primo! on Jan 8, 2009

22

lol #3 i was thinking the same thing... it looks like they took the script, cut out the gym and set it on the streets of new york although i did find never back down suprisingly entertaining, and i am a sucker for violence so internet ftw

Janny on Jan 8, 2009

23

modern day lionheart.. ha... looks entertaining tho. im in

@Krupz, @Matt: Last song -- Fort Minor, "Remember the Name." Ehhhh. Agree with all the redux comments. I love gritty stuff and they're really trying to sell that badass gut-punching male violent youth/corruption/lone boy thing (including the good-hearted pretty girl, who saw THAT coming?)... but the voiceover does kill it for me. And Channing Tatum's acting is just always horrible, no matter what he does. I think, here, it's his voice. It's not magnetic or notable in the least. He's just... there. If it was a different actor, I'd be more interested.

DK on Jan 8, 2009

25

i found never back down surprisingly entertaining also. i will most likely catch this as well- looks good. the name of the song @ the end of the trailer is remember the name, by fort minor (mike shinoda's side project)

#20 the song at the end of the trailer is fort minor - remember the name i think it looks good!! ill b seeing it

I think Chatting might screw up his career with this movie.

Fisherr on Jan 8, 2009

28

hahahah.... #27.... right with you .. wait... hmm.. nope... thought he as a tool from the beginning... Coach Carter - crap dialogue Step Up - BLAH, not even commenting more on that. Stop Loss - DAMN, he had a chance there... nope... tool My wife might oogle all over him... but I think he is the WRONG one for this movie.... Love Terrence Howard for the casting selection... but that could also be that I just see him as a skeezy guy many times anyways... hahaha I will still go see it... but that is just the IFC nerd in me... Well that and my wife will want to see him without a shirt

This is going to become one of those "dude classics" along the lines of Lionheart, Fight Club and Boiler Room. It kind of looks like a mixture of the 3 actually. Nothing overly original in the plot, and luckily they added an actor thats going to draw in a female crowd as well. There are going to be a lot of guys who should be thankful that he's in this movie....otherwise they wouldn't get to see it in theaters. I kind of like Tatum. I think he's still cutting his teeth in Hollywood. He'll probably never be a superb actor, but he's got Vin Diesel potential.

I think the fights in Never Back Down were actually surprisngly good in a kind of updated Karate Kid for the new generation! I enjoyed the MMA fighting style which actually made a change from a pure boxing movie. So far the action in this movie looks a very weak but i guess ill hold judgement. Would be great if they made it a little less "Street" and more realistic! It looks like the main character hardly gets a scratch on him....and too be honest Channing doesnt look mean or dirty enough. I think an unknown actor with maybe some MMA experience and a Hong Kong fight director would make this what it needs to be...otherwise its just MTV soundtrack and a few shots of Channing with his shirt off to please the female fans!!!

I hope Tyler Durden (Fight Club) shows up and kicks all of their asses. PG-13 fight movie is like watching a fight on a playground. This movies main character is in GI JOE. I think it's a taste of whats to come for GI JOE fans.

Hooplah complete hooplah. Cant by me love + never back down + red belt + the something from nothing scenario = fighting....Complete garbage. Somebody come out with a story of a real fighter in real life and at the top of his game. If you need to watch something real watch "the smashing machine.

AP All Day! on Jan 11, 2009

Cung Le? Why oh why did you get involved with this? What's with MMA stars allowing themselves to be typecasted into terrible movies lately? Also, just wow at the idiot who compared this movie to Fight Club.

Yet again another example of something that shows that there simply isn't anything new being made anymore. But, it does look just good enough that if my friends end up going I'll join them. I just won't be the one to suggest it. Too many recycled concepts in it.

Web Based Training on Jan 13, 2009

46

oh come on! why all the hating? is it cause the lead is so damn good looking? yes, the story has been told before, but it's all about a story WELL TOLD... and this looks like one of those. looks much more interesting than all that super hero comic book CRAP out there. the director did a good job exploring the relationships between characters in his last film, i imagine he will do the same in this one. have a feeling this movie won't just be about the "fighting". totally worth a look.

i hate about people talking about this is just like never back down when it really isnt. Never back down and fighting have two very different plots. Never back down really is just a dumb movie about a guy who learns mma to just beat up a bully. While Fighting is a drama, that takes itself more seriously and is about more than just fighting, about a man who uses underground fighting to give him money, and like that trailer said the life he always wanted.the fighting styles are somewhat different they dont use as much takedowns and submissions like they do in never back down. The settings in which they fight is very different.
