'My Name Is Memory' Three-Book Series Sparks a Bidding War
by Ethan Anderton
November 11, 2009
When a bidding war breaks out for an as yet unpublished series of books, it's a safe bet that the story has some serious drawing power. But in this case, I'm not thrilled about the purchase in question as Variety reports New Regency and Peter Chernin have just made another big acquisition in a bidding war for My Name Is Memory, the first of a three-book series written by Ann Brashares which follows the meeting of a college couple who come to the realization that their souls have been reincarnated over hundreds of years, but that these soulmates keep losing each other. But wait, it's even more complicated than that. Read on!
While the guy remembers the details of their previous lives, and his often exasperating attempts to connect with her romantically, the lady cannot recall the events of those past lives. The book is said to have elements of Twilight (not good) as well as The Time Traveler's Wife (which is good, because the book is a fantastic read though it had some difficulty transferring to film). This concept actually sounds like what the original trailer for Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain implied that story would be about. And honestly, even at the risk of sounding girly, I quite enjoy romances with an inexplicable inciting incident or concept that brings love about (see Il Mare or its remake The Lake House). We'll just have to wait and see how this pans out.
