Nachmanoff Directing Fox in Adaptation of Oni's Billy Smoke
by Alex Billington
May 6, 2009
Warner Brothers has announced that they are developing an adaptation of a forthcoming comic book series called Billy Smoke being published by Oni Press (the same company who put out Scott Pilgrim). The comics, written by B. Clay Moore and illustrated by Eric Kim, are about an elite hit man who is nearly killed during a botched job. He realizes that his only way to find redemption is to rid the world of all assassins. The adaptation will be directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff, who last directed the thriller Traitor last year. Set to star as the assassin is Matthew Fox. No word yet on when this will go into production at Warner Brothers.
It looks as if Fox has been involved in this from the very start, helping promote the comic since it was first announced last year. You can check out a glimpse at the cover art on the Oni Press forums and read about some more details over there. I did eventually see Nachmanoff's Traitor last year and thought it was good, but not great, though I'll say I think he could eventually become a great director. I'm much more excited to see Matthew Fox take on a lead role. He's an exceptional actor and I loved seeing him in Speed Racer last year. Even though we've seen plenty of assassin movies, I'm more than happy to have him leading this one.
