That photo you see above is the newest photo debuted by USA Today from Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. The newspaper recently talked with Robert Downey Jr. about his reactions to the Oscar nomination (for Tropic Thunder) but really didn't get in one bit about Sherlock Holmes at all, give or take the confirmation that it will end up being PG-13. The production shifted from London to New York in January and is finishing its last few weeks of shooting. If you want to hear what Downey Jr. has to say about the Oscars, head over to USA Today, otherwise, read on for a short commentary on ratings.
Of the five films that Guy Ritchie has made, every last one of them has been rated R. So at first glance, it's a bit odd to see that Ritchie is going PG-13 with Sherlock Holmes, but then again, I actually don't think it's a bad thing. First off, we know that this has been a studio production all along, so it was probably always written as PG-13 and won't be cut down in editing. Secondly, I like seeing director's challenge themselves, and Guy Ritchie is one that I know a lot of people are tired of seeing the same old style from. Hopefully forcing himself to do a PG-13 studio film will give him a bit of some newfound perspective.
