Paranormal Producers Sell Their Spec Script 'The Jealous One'
by Alex Billington
October 7, 2009
Wait a minute, there were producers on Paranormal Activity? If you've seen it, it feels like the kind of film that was created and shot by the director and his two friends and that's it. I totally forgot there were other people actually involved! Producers Steven Schneider and Jason Blum (who also produced Tooth Fairy) are close to selling their spec script titled The Jealous One to Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. The project is described as a Hitchcockian thriller, based on Celia Fremlin's 1985 book, that centers on a wife who dreams she murdered a woman who might be tempting her husband, only to find the woman has disappeared.
The screenplay was written by newcomer Carey Malloy. The Risky Biz article on the news focuses on how Paranormal is putting these two guys in the spotlight. "Jealous represents an increasingly rare occurrence in the development world: a spec sale. That category has taken a hard hit as studios buy less and less work from unknowns, opting instead to acquire a branded property and simply put a writer on it. With Jealous already a book, producers thought about going out with it as a pitch, but with studios even less likely to buy a pitch from an unknown than they are a spec, the producers opted to develop the script first to show a studio what was possible." Sounds like an interesting new little project to keep our eyes on as it develops.
