As Jason Voorhees polishes his hockey mask and sharpens his machete in preparation for Friday the 13th's return to cinema come the 13th of February, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller about a potential sequel to this latest Friday the 13th, the reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street, and even the possibility of Freddy vs Jason 2. It's to be expected that talks of a sequel to the upcoming Friday the 13th film are stewing even before its release -- with that franchise attacking its twelfth installment, it's almost insured. But, of course, even serious sequel talks hinge on Jason's success at the box office.
"I think that if the movie does well, we're all interested in going back to Camp Crystal Lake and making another one. We had a great time and we have Derek [Mears] (Jason Voorhees) for another movie. We would love to work with him again, but we won't make any plans set in stone until we see if the fans respond well to the one we just did," Fuller said. Oh, and just because the next Friday will be the 13th film of the franchise, Fuller assures that it's the story that remains at the forefront. "The most important thing is the story - it won't be more epic because it's the 13th one. It's important to us to maintain the quality like we have in this one. We want to have great actors, a lot of fun and great scares, that's what we set out to do."
And even if the Jason-faithful do come out in droves on the 13th, Fuller says that the reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street will take precedent over any Friday sequel. "Nightmare will come first, we're gearing up to start that movie [now]. We're hopeful to announce a director in the next two or three weeks. Once that happens, we're going to try and move ahead and start to get that movie going first. I believe that Nightmare is the next movie we're shooting and we're hoping to shoot that in April/May in Chicago." We've written a lot about this previously, including a big update with thoughts from Fuller back in December.
So now that Platinum Dunes is bringing both Jason and Freddy into the contemporary, does that mean we're eventually going to see Freddy vs Jason 2? "No, we haven't really thought about doing [another] Freddy vs Jason. I just don't have a handle on how we'd do that movie. I don't know exactly what Freddy [Krueger] is going to be yet, and until I know what Freddy is, I can't commit until I know who is playing Freddy and how that pans out. But we haven't thought about that at all." I guess that should be taken as a good thing, right? Regardless, it should prove to be a bloody next couple of years for Platinum Dunes. Is everyone excited to see Freddy follow in Jason's, Michael's, and Leatherface's rebooted footsteps?
