Robert Rodriguez's Updates on Sin City 2 & Machete Trilogy

Last week, a small handful of websites were invited to the set of Robert Rodriguez's Predators down in Austin, TX (we sadly weren't included). While there, they talked with Robert Rodriguez about all of the projects he currently has in the works, from Spy Kids to Sin City 2 to Machete. He doesn't really say much, but does give some informative and possibly even amusing updates on Sin City 2 and Machete though, so I'm focusing on those. You can find a complete rundown of everything on Collider or RopeofSilicon if you're curious about Spy Kids or any other upcoming projects. And with that, let's see what Rodriguez had to say.
Before we get to Machete, let's start with Sin City. Rodriguez was asked if he's still planning on making the sequel one day and his answer was the same as before: "Yeah we still talk about doing that as early as later next year, but I haven’t gotten into that yet." So what's taking them so long? "I know Frank [Miller] wants to do it I know I wanna do it and its always sort of time permitting kind of thing but its not like I can tell you definitely we’re starting... its not my next picture... I know that. Doesn’t mean that its not the picture right after because that's still a possibility." Rodriguez says there's even been a script ready to go since 2007.
So it will happen one day, just not any time soon. Let's move on to something that is definitely happening - Machete. They've already finished shooting and currently editing ("it's going really terrific, it looks really great," Rodriguez says) but let's hear from Danny Trejo himself, who also stars in Predators. From IGN:
"Robert had been training me for Machete since we did Desperado," said Danny Trejo. "Everybody thinks that Machete came out of a trailer, but it didn't... It is a culmination of Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico... There's even a little bit of From Dusk Till Dawn in there. I think it's gonna be one of his best. And I'm not just saying that 'cause I'm the lead; it's just a great movie. I think everybody's gonna walk away from that movie with some opinion. It's a battle for our border, you know? People are really serious about what's going on with the border, and it shows the negative side of both sides. Not just, you know, we want everybody to cross, or we don't want anybody to cross. It shows the negative side of both sides. Everybody's gonna be pissed off!"
Rodriguez adds: "We always talked about making him a franchise character. Danny and I talked about it in '94... maybe Desperado that's when I first mentioned the Machete character. So imagine that... he's been bugging me since '94." We used to hear from Trejo every few months claiming that we would eventually see a trilogy of Machete movies. And of course, he already wants those sequels. "We want Machete, Machete Kills, and Machete Kills Again. That's mine and Robert's standards, you know? Every time I text him, he'll text me back, 'Machete 2, coming up!'" And what does Rodriguez have to say? "I do like Machete in Space..."
Oddly enough, Rodriguez didn't talk about The Jetsons or Nerveracker at all, the latter of which was a sci-fi project that Dimension Films pulled from their line-up back in August even though we thought it was pretty much ready to start shooting and everything. While I am looking forward to Predators, I'd like to see Robert Rodriguez get back to directing some gritty, hardcore action and/or sci-fi movies. Whether it's Sin City 2 or some other sci-fi project, I don't really care, I'm just tired of seeing Rodriguez only directing kids movies. He needs to get his hands dirty again! Hopefully we'll see a trailer for Machete while we wait for more updates.
