Rumor: Benicio Del Toro Also in Sofia Coppola's Somewhere?

Benicio Del Toro

Not that this is the kind of movie where it's exciting to hear that a big actor may be involved, but there's a rumor floating around (courtesy of Vulture) that Benicio Del Toro is also in Sofia Coppola's new hotel movie Somewhere. The project was first announced back in April and is currently shooting at the iconic and (in)famous Chateau Marmont in Hollywood (hey, I drive by there all the time!). We know that it stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning as a "bad boy actor" and his estranged 11-year-old daughter, respectively. We also know that Jackass star Chris Pontius has a supporting role, but now Benicio Del Toro is in, too?

The rumor comes from blog for the band Rooney where they explain that they "spent the day at the world famous Chateau Marmont on the set of the new Sofia Coppola film, Somewhere." Out of nowhere, they say that "the movie stars Stephen Dorf and Benicio Del Torro [sic]." It does? We're not sure if this is true, or if Del Toro is just spending some time at the hotel, but it's at least interesting. Maybe he's brushing up on his comedy in preparation for The Three Stooges? As I was writing, Movieline confirmed that he's in, but that it's only a cameo. "His Somewhere role involves a brief run-in with Dorff’s actor at the historic hotel."

I'm game for anything Sophia Coppola directs. Virgin suicides and Lost in Translation were both fantastic mood pieces. I even liked Marie Antoinette, though it's definitely her weakest.
  • I hope this is more Lost in Translation good than Marie Antoinette horrible.
