The Hangover Review

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Holy sh*t, I can't believe the MPAA let them show that! The Hangover is this summer's underdog comedy that might just become a breakout hit. Its got a crazy hilarious concept, the perfect cast, and some top notch marketing. But how is it as a movie? Any good? Does it live up to those brilliant trailers or is it just a drawn out and boring extension of those two-minutes. How was Mike Tyson's cameo? Was Zach Galifianakis as funny as he looked in the trailers? Who else stood out from the cast? Sound off below, leave your thoughts, and let us know what you thought of The Hangover!

To fuel the fire, I thought The Hangover was great, Todd Phillips did a good job, and the cast really is perfect. I may not be fond of Ken Jeong, who plays Mr. Chow, but I thought he was a hilarious addition this time, as was Mike Tyson. But if I have to be critical, the concept really is drawn out too much. It takes way too long to get to the point where they wake up without knowing what happened (that should've been the opening scene) and the story extends over a weekend, not just one day (as it should). As much as I enjoyed it, I think it could've been tightened up just a bit. Though the photographs are the end were truly insane!

What did you think of The Hangover? This summer's best comedy or too slow and boring?

Freakin Hillarious, so good after reading this website for over a year, I made this comment account jut today, so I could say this movie was freakin hillarious.
  • Rorschach90
I thought it just ok. They really hyped it up, and it just didn't deliver. The parts shown in the trailer were the funniest parts, and by the time they were shown in the movie, they were overplayed and unfunny. This year is just a bad year for comedies. Year One and Land of the Lost look terrible, Yes Man was crap, and even The Hangover wasn't that good. 2008, to me anyway, was way better with Step Brothers, Pineapple Express, and Tropic Thunder. Better luck next year

It was beyond funny. I loved the humor and Mike Tyson. Zack G was hilarious. Everyone should see this movie.
  • xerxex
The Rain Man bit was what really got me in the movie, especially Zach Galifianakis (he was a retard) This really was funny and I mean really, really, really funny! #2 although I respect you're opinion and have no hope of attempting to change your thoughts, I just wanted to say that you are wrong! extremely FUNNY!

going to see this after work

Absolute shite. Everything from the camera work to the acting was terrible. As usual with recent comedy films they show the best parts in the trailer. Sometimes I think I had a smile on my face but just for a brieth moment. The rest was a painful travel between scenes (shown in the trailer). This reminded me too much of Step Brothers and Pineapple Express, Too much expectations and absolutely no real comic value.

By the way, it was a prosthetic :)
  • I have to say, i thought it was brilliant. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euBvVrju1ic
  • it was the best comedy ive seen in a while.
  • Warren J
Alex, Galifianakis nails it. I appreciate how Todd Phillips allowed the extra pause in much of the dialogue -giving the actors room to breathe, improve, and work off each other. I enjoyed it. If only there were already Hangover quotes online! I'd do it again next week but the Jonas Brothers are in town. Any week after that, my schedule is free and clear.

Seriously one of the funniest movies ive seen in a long time. Was laughing from begining to end prob one of the best comedy ive seen in a long time.
  • teyhtr
I thought the photos in the end credits were the funniest parts of the movie. The movie was solid and much like Taken, there was no fat at all. Everything was to keep the plot moving foward.
  • LOL
Black Doug! hahaha mike epps man the movie was funny, and it didnt show all the good laughs in the trailers. Everyone acted really well...and how did they allow them to show all of that. I mean i guess its just comes with how society sees things now...still though probably one of the funniest movies in a long time. AND NO i do not say that about a lot of comedies
  • Wonderful. The movie was lots of fun. Todd Phillips' best work since Hated. FOR REAL.
  • dan
    funny movie........i enjoyed it.
  • JimD

    freaking loved it! LOVED IT!

To #6, you are one of the few that go into a comedy ready to criticize the camera work. The Hangover was just what comedies should be: over-the-top and FUN. Great movie.
  • I went to see it about 3 weeks ago, it was hilarious!!! I'm actually going to go see it again with a friend on Wednesday. I always catch new things I didn't catch the first time around.
  • Jeff
Ever since I saw the first trailer for this movie I've been looking forward to finally getting to see it. And to be honest, it wasn't exactly what I saw expecting, but what it was was still hilarious and awesome. By far the most entertaining movie of 2009 so far
  • Max
I thought the trailer was really stupid and didn't look funny at all. The movie looked like it was going to be like Dude, Where's My Car (because of the whole they forgot last night thing). But my friend convinced me and I saw it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was really funny, and just a great overall movie.
  • Gene
Seems like one of those movies that will be on tv forever. I just don't know how they'll cut it up for tv. Great flick, and the pics at the end just threw it over the top.

Just a couple of quick thoughts before I get into the movie itself: The crowd I watched the movie with laughed hysterically at the trailers for “I love you Beth Cooper” and “The Proposal”. And it’s not to say that those movies might be funny but the trailers were so bad I had to wonder about the audience I was sitting down to watch The Hangover with. God help me if the movie “Ms. March” had been on the trailer reel. I just don’t get how such obvious comedy (comedy used in its loosest sense) can make so many people laugh. So onto The Hangover…. I actually enjoyed it, quite a bit. I had previously been a big Bradley Cooper detractor. To me, he had always been the most forgettable part of any movie I had seen him in. He always seemed to just blend into the background and was kind of like Mac and Cheese, something to eat but nothing one would call a meal. He turns out to be one of the better things about The Hangover. The story is pretty basic. Nothing new to be seen for the most part. But by the end of the flick I felt satisfied. Let’s start with the cast: Bradley Cooper had a swagger and style about him that I have never seem from him before. He’s kind of a dick, but also the kind of guy that I’d love to have at my bachelor party. Ed Helms is the Ed Helms I have grown to know and love(Daily Show and the Office). Zach Gilifianakis is a strange bird. Never managed to see him or anything he did before this movie. Everyone I know loves him. I thought he was fun in this flick but nothing remarkable. He’s the loveable loser sidekick that seems to be needed in every movie/tv show, according to the suits. I can hear the pitch now; “We love the Stu and Phil characters. But we think they need a foil. Someone smart, like Rainman, but a little fat and mysterious, maybe with a giant beard and mustache.” “We could even do a Rainman spoof with him as the Dustin Hoffman character!” I’m not saying he didn’t belong in the movie but there were moments that were too forced and he was at the center of all of them. Overall, I liked this movie. I just wish that when they had the chance to hit a high note, they hadn’t gone the other way and hit the lowest common denominator note. I think they would have done well to have examined more of the night of debauchery than to relegate it to pictures in the end credits. 2 ¾ stars out of 4.

My friends were really crazy about it, so I went to see it with them. I thought it was okay, but I found myself just sitting there quiet a lot when the rest of the audience was laughing their heads off. I'd give it a 6/10 personally.

Simply put the most enjoyable experience I've had at the cinema this summer. Even Star Trek, Wolverine and Terminator don't live up to the EXPERIENCE(not cinematic greatness) this movie had.
  • John
I went at saw it at a Preview Screening and thought it was great, along with everyone else in the cinema. So many people were laughing throughout the whole thing.. Ok the trailer probably showed a few too many good lines/setups, but there were still lots of other funny bits in it.. and lots of memorable characters. Would recommend it for sure!
  • Mattyc
Really enjoyed it...one of the funniest films I've seen in a while, but there's no way it would have been nearly that funny without Galifianakis. He was absolutely spot on.
  • Zach Galifianakis if comedic gold. Finally he had a role that had him shine. Textbook definition of a must see summer comedy.

This movie was hilarious...seriously hilarious...wonder what the plot for the sequel will be...

I live three minutes walking distance from a nine screen theatre . You would think I see a lot of films . I rarely see anything on a big screen anymore . My wife had heard it was pretty funny . I was tired , and we almost didn't go . Glad I did . It's certainly low brow comedy . But not as silly / stupid as say , "Blazing Saddles ". The writing keeps you guessing from start to finish about what else could go wrong on this trip ? These guys go to Vegas to get wild and it just gets completely out of hand . Don't know the actors but the one who plays the straight man and tells evryone it's going to be allright , just keeps up the suspense of just when is the next load of squat going to hit the fan ? I laughed almost from start to finish . It did surprise me at the end that the one still picture at the end didn't nix the "R" rating . Prosthetic or not . Really liked it .

  • Andrew
Absolutely one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I barely stopped laughing the entire time. This movie actually made me feel high, and I wasn't even high. Definitely an instant favorite. Can't wait for the unrated edition on DVD. :)
  • I enjoyed it very much. best comedy i've seen in a long time. pineapple express sucked. tropic thunder and step brother was only funny in parts.
  • Lags
GREATEST COMEDY I HAVE EVER SEEN! Everyone should see it because I have never laughed so much in a movie theater. Go see it if you haven't, but even if you have...go see it again!!!!!
  • Maria
Hilarious! I feel like I need to watch it a second time 1) to catch everything and 2) because I have to drag more friends to it!!!! Saw it last night...shopping to day I saw a baby and started laughing becuase I'd think about the scenes with Carlos...I expected it to be run of the mill....the concepts nothing new and a combination of so many other films, also doubted Zach's character at first because the first scene with him has been done (awkward hug of naked/ pantless men)...but was SO Pleased with it all!!!! It really exceeded my expectations and can't wait to watch it again.
  • neonblue120
I left the movie with hurting torso, a headache, soar throat, watery eyes, hardly able to breath just thinking about it, you tell me if it was funny.
  • kindbuddy
If you thought the movie was 100% terrible you absolutely have NO sense of humor. I respect opinions and saying it was ok is alright but the WHOLE thing terrible you need to lighten up. This movie was very funny to ME. I can't speak for anyone else though.
  • austin
I thought the hangover was funny as hell, the cast chemistry i though kept the movie from getting stael too quick, zach galifinakis was funny as always, and some of the crazy things they do are relateable in real life, and i think that makes the movie that much better when you say, oh yeah, didnt we do some of that? also i think its funnier than pineapple express and tropic thunder, those movies had moments but would stall out or just seem a little played, i have to admit the hangover had alot of played out trailers but it helped get alot of people to check it out. loved the pictures at the end
  • charles rufes
I have seen it twice and love it. Funny throughout and I can't wait to see what they will come up with for the sequel. Movies with Will and that guy from knocked up are getting boring......i tried to watch pineapple express 3 times and fell asleep each time. #6 is a ra-tard. Get a life kid. Great movie this might be the 1st DVD I will actually purchase when it comes out.
  • C-Young
"Hey... Ever seen a baby do this?" That's all I gotta say!
  • kimberly hawk
My husband and I went to see this last week-end and loved it...funniest movie since Old School. The actor with the beard is brilliant...loved the guy from The Office. Going to see it again!
  • nothanks
man i feel bad for people who didnt like this movie - i can't imagine going through life with no sense of humor at all
  • RPG
This is the #! movie in America?!? I guess if you are in your 20's or 30's would could appreciate this lame and vacuous comedy. Not being in either of those two decades it was a two hours that I can not get back.
  • Rock Star
For those who didn't enjoy or 'get' this movie, what a sad life they must lead. I bought a ticket knowing this will be a spoof on another bachelor party and thoroughly enjoyed it as much as the other 95% in the theatre. It just goes to show that about 5% of the movie going public are grumpy gonads who love living under a rock! I'm over it. Ciao
  • Fagans
Funniest movie I've ever seen. Period.
  • Saw this Friday just gone: absolutely hilarious. One of the best comedies I've seen in recent years. Proper, laugh out loud funny. Well put together, Zach was hilarious, Bradley Cooper was ace, Ed Helms portrayed his buttoned-down-man-gone-wild character so well. Ah, so many funny moments ("In the face! IN THE FACE!!!") - snort! Buying it when it's out on Blu-Ray :-)
  • Peter Z
I am womdering if we were watching the same film. Now that it got the Golden Globe I decided to watch it agin, because obviously I missed something, I think it was purely boring. To the point of I was tempted to turn off the dvd and I make a living on making films. It was quite a bad time of the yer when I watched it so I will have to do it again with an open mind, but quite frankly I would be surprised if I liked it the second time :(
  • Golfer1
I had high expectations seeing this movie because all my friends loved it. I actually fell asleep watching this, I found certain parts funny but for the most part I didn't think it was as funny as everybody said it was. I have definitely seen better comedies! It was totally over-rated to me.
  • erik
You know there are'nt many movies now that actually make you bust out laughing. And this one was along with those. I'd have to say that the last things I thought were funny was the last time i saw wkuk or pineapple express.
