So we know that Terry Gilliam is currently trying to restart his The Man Who Killed Don Quixote project. And we also know that Johnny Depp will not be back to reprise his role as Toby Grisoni. So who is Gilliam going after instead? Robert Duvall. Duvall himself just told Collider today that, "I may work with Terry Gilliam next - if they get the money - to play Don Quixote de la Mancha." So it all comes down to the funding. In the original version, French actor Jean Rochefort had been cast as Don Quixote, but it looks like Gilliam is starting over from scratch this time. And Duvall seems like a more than acceptable alternative.
Duvall said they would be shooting in Spain and around Europe if it indeed gets funding. "Totally amazing to work with Terry Gilliam. But, once again, the money. It's so difficult to get the money. He saw me play a Cuban barber one time with Richard Harris and that's what gave him the idea to cast me as Don Quixote." He's talking about the film Wrestling Ernest Hemingway directed by Randa Haines, which I may need to check out now. I never really knew much about Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, but it sounds like it could be awesome. And if he does get Duvall, then consider me already sold. We'll keep you updated!
