Zhang Yimou Moving Forward with Three Guns Next
by Brandon Lee Tenney
April 30, 2009
Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the creator/director/orchestrator and all-around genius behind the 2008 Summer Olympic Games' opening ceremony in Beijing, is starting work on his next film, called Amazing Tales - Three Guns, as reported by Variety today. The film is going to be part thriller, part comedy, and all visually stunning - if his previous films (House of Flying Daggers, Jet Li's Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower) are any indication. But the plot thickens. Those cinematic sleuths over at SlashFilm are reporting that Three Guns may actually be a remake of the Coen Brothers' first film Blood Simple.
Blood Simple involves, as you might expect from the Coens, double-crossing and cheating and death and blood all topped with a noirish bow. With Yimou on-board for Amazing Tales - Three Guns, there's sure to be some martial arts thrown in there and, again, did I mention the visually stunning bit? Now, none of this can either be confirmed or denied, since it's only just a rumor that comes from MonkeyPeaches, but Yimou's film is most certainly moving forward - that we know for sure. Shooting is set to start in the Gansu province in June with a hope to a release it at Chinese New Year (February 14, 2010). Whether it's a re-appropriated remake or a brand new property, if Zhang Yimou is behind the camera, I'll be in front of the screen.
