The Tourist with Johnny Depp Finally Lands a New/Old Director

January 13, 2010

Angelina Jolie / Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck / Johnny Depp

Over the past few months The Tourist has had its fair share of talent switching. From having trouble to deciding on a director to replacing Sam Worthington with Johnny Depp, there's no doubt been a lot of tapdancing. Well, now producers have gone back in time, if you will, to lock down a director as Variety reports Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck has returned to helm the spy thriller starring Depp and Angelina Jolie after he left the project last fall over creative differences. This will be Donnersmarck's first film since his breakthrough bout directing his Academy Award winning foreign film The Lives of Others.

If you don't fully remember, The Tourist follows a female Interpol agent (Jolie) who draws an unwitting American tourist (Depp) into her attempt to locate a criminal who was once her lover.  I can't say enough how happy I am to have Depp replacing Sam Worthington who has about as much emotion expression as a Shamwow. That's right I said it. On the other hand, I'm a little disappointed that Alfonso Cuaron, who was once mentioned as possibly directing the thriller, isn't attached anymore, but it'll be interesting to see what von Donnersmarck can do with a project like this, that is, if he decides to actually stick around this time.

i wonder if itll be a strong character role for Depp or more of laid back closer to himself. It'd be interesting to see him do a strong characterization in a real world setting rather than a fantasy one like gilliam's, burton's, or the pirates franchise.

#2, you obviously have not seen many of Depp's films…he has done plenty of "non fantasy" movies. In my opinion, his strength is portraying "real" people. Many of his films do not involve Gilliam, Burton or Pirates.
