Disney's Indie Distributor Miramax Officially Closes its Doors
After operating for over 31 years, Miramax has finally shut down, and its New York and Los Angeles offices will both be closed. Another casualty of this economy? Or just another casualty of the always-changing world of motion pictures? Ever since Mike Judge's Extract bombed last year, Miramax has been on the verge of closing down. And now with Rich Ross running Disney, that studio, which has owned Miramax for 17 years, has finally put the last nail in its coffin. For those that don't know, the distributor was originally founded in 1979 by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who broke off due to infighting in 2005 to start their own company.

Must Watch: Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps Teaser Trailer
Fox has debuted a teaser trailer for Oliver Stone's Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps over on IMDb. This trailer introduces us to the new world that Gordon Gekko is entering, some 23 years after he went to prison at the end of Wall Street. Let me be the first to say - I love this teaser. It's absolutely perfect. It's one hell of a badass introduction to this contemporary world and I love the song they use, I love the footage (like seeing the rapper get into the limo), and I love the dialogue: "Someone reminded me I once said: 'Greed is good.' Now it seems it's legal." This looks like it'll be a strong return to form for Oliver Stone. Bring it on!

Gorgeous New Alice in Wonderland Photos and Concept Art
Disney is ramping up their final big marketing push for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, due out on March 5th, and has been releasing numerous video featurettes and photo series that show the progression from green screen to finished CGI. Anyway, over on Animatie (via SlashFilm), they've debuted a big batch of concept art and new photos for the film that are too beautiful to pass up. At this point I'm looking forward to finally seeing movie, but these are a great last minute reminder that it's coming up very soon. My favorite two photos I've put at the end, too, the one with the Caterpillar and the one with the Cheshire Cat. Enjoy!

Watch This: First Official Trailer for The Diary of a Wimpy Kid
When Rotten Tomatoes handed out their Golden Tomatoes for the best reviewed movies of the 2009, it was sad to see that the highest ranked movie for kids (that wasn't animated) was Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are at 73% with the pathetic Hotel for Dogs behind with a measly 46%. It's clear that kids & families alike are in dire need of some quality entertainment in the live action arena. So I'm pleased to present the first trailer (and poster) for the upcoming comedy adaptation The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, a children's graphic novel by Jeff Kinney following the travails of wise-cracking middle school student Greg Heffley.

Shane Black and Mel Gibson Back Together for Cold Warrior
With no less than four Lethal Weapon films, there's no doubt that Mel Gibson and writer Shane Black have quite a history together. However, one area of their professional relationship that never blossomed would've had Black directing Gibson in Lethal Weapon 5. But since the project never got off the ground, the two have been left waiting to collaborate again. But now THR reports Gibson is in talks to join Black's spy thriller Cold Warrior, which follows a Cold War spy (Gibson) who comes out of retirement to confront a domestic terrorism threat from Russia by joining with a young agent. Guess who's not too old for this shit?

Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz & More Join Mad Max: Fury Road
It's always a nice surprise when an actor who had a young feature film debut goes almost unseen for a few years and then comes back as a mature on-screen talent. Such is the case with Nicholas Hoult who saw his on-screen debut opposite Hugh Grant in About a Boy, but in the past couple years has shown a much more adult side starring in the risque British series "Skins" and also giving a BAFTA nominated performance in A Single Man. In addition to starring in the forthcoming Clash of the Titans, Hoult, along with Zoe Kravitz, Teresa Palmer and Adelaide Clemens, are all in negotiations to co-star in Mad Max: Fury Road.

Zac Efron Joins Spy Thriller & Back to the Future-Esque Film
I'm sure the latter portion of that headline might have been worrisome, but don't fret, because fortunately there isn't a Back to the Future remake or anything like that in the works (at least that we know of). But the sci-fi classic is apparently a point of reference for a project that Deadline Hollywood reports Zac Efron is looking to join in addition to the spy thriller Fire, an adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis' graphic novel of the same name with a story in the the vein of Robert Ludlum's action novels (think Bourne). The former project is a bit of a confusing endeavor that sets out to combine two separate projects into one movie.

Rumor: Avatar 2 Has Already Started Early Pre-Production?
Earlier this week, James Cameron's Avatar finally passed Titanic to become the highest grossing movie of all-time. With that kind of extreme success, it's obvious that 20th Century Fox wants to get things going on a prequel as soon as possible. I've heard rumblings that they want it ready right away. Now SlashFilm has heard from a trustworthy source that they've apparently already started hiring technical crew members for Avatar 2, the eventual sequel to the monumental blockbuster. Cameron confirmed a few weeks back that the sequel is definitely in the works. And I expect James Cameron will be back to direct it as well. Read on!

Tom Hanks Developing Film on History of The Comedy Store
Not only do I enjoy laughing, but I seek out comedy like a detective, and follow stand-up comedians like others follow indie rock bands: it's an obsession. So it pleases me immensely to hear from Pajiba that Tom Hanks and his Playtone Productions banner are developing a film based partially on the life of Mitzi Shore, but moreso on her ownership of the staple comedy club in Los Angeles, The Comedy Store, which served as the starting point for dozens of comedians who are nothing short of comedy icons today. The narrative is based on the book I'm Dying Up Here: Heartbreak and High Times in Stand-up Comedy's Golden Era.

George Lucas Producing a Mystery CGI Musical with Fairies
It almost sounds like something The Onion would craft for laughs, but this is absolutely true as THR's Heat Vision reports George Lucas is in pre-production at Skywalker Ranch on an untitled, super secret, CGI musical of which the only plot details that have come to surface are that it features fairies. I guess if James Cameron can remake Fern Gully, Lucas thinks he should take a crack at it. I jest, but the project does seem a little out of the ordinary. But then again, I remember some in depth discussion about the creation of the space opera that takes place in Revenge of the Sith so maybe its some kind of weird passion project for him.

Sundance Interview: Directors Jay & Mark Duplass on Cyrus
Jay and Mark Duplass are no strangers to the Sundance Film Festival. In fact, they're pretty much family, having premiered multiple shorts and feature films at the festival over the years. They've returned this year with their first studio feature, Cyrus, starring John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, and Marisa Tomei. Brandon and I both saw the film at its world premiere and enjoyed it (watch our video review). A few days ago I caught up with Jay & Mark Duplass for a chat about their new film and their filmmaking process in general, since the ways these guys shoot their films is unlike anyone else out there. Anyway, check out the interview below!
