Sundance 2010 Day 6: This is Why I Prefer Going in Public

Sundance - Egyptian Theater

I love the Sundance Film Festival for many different reasons, but one of them is that the experience of seeing films here is second to none. What I mean is that I love attending the world premiere screenings of films in wonderful theaters like Eccles (the local high school auditorium), the Racquet Club, the Library, and of course, the world famous Egyptian Theater (which is where that marquee seen above comes from). This is also the exact same reason why I don't like attending press screenings. The experience just isn't the same. In fact, it's pretty dull in comparison. And after a bad experience today, I really don't like the press screenings.

Alex's Sundance Review: Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine

Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine

I didn't know what I was getting into with Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine and I'm still not sure I fully understand what I saw. I am fairly young and haven't been married so I couldn't compare my experiences in real life with those in the movie, since this film is about marriage. However, I do still feel like Blue Valentine is one of the best films of Sundance, despite being considerably depressing (I have to be honest). But I also consider films that leave me that emotionally affected some of the very best films, especially when they also have phenomenal performances, an intense captivating story, and incredibly gorgeous cinematography.

Kevin Feige Excitedly Talks Future Projects and The Avengers

Kevin Feige

Yes, it's true that the long awaited mega superhero flick The Avengers is set to be released in May of 2012. While two years may seem like an eternity to wait for what promises to be one of the most epic comic book adaptations of all time, it's a pitifully small increment in Hollywood time, and it's never too early to start looking toward the future. Cue Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige who sat down with SFX Magazine (via Superhero Hype) and talked about laying the foundation for The Avengers by way of both Iron Man movies, Thor, Captain America and, yes, The Incredible Hulk who, Feige confirmed, will be in Avengers.

Guy Ritchie Leaves DC Comics' Lobo for Sherlock Holmes 2

Guy Ritchie

Little did we know that when Robert Downey Jr. made the decision to leave Jon Favreau's adaptation of Platinum Comics Cowboys & Aliens, that he would be setting a precedent to follow down the road as Hero Complex reports director Guy Ritchie has left his own adaptation of DC Comics' Lobo in favor of pursuing Sherlock Holmes 2. Surely the $388 million worldwide box office cumulative combined with a surprising Golden Globe win for Downey's portrayal of the eloquent yet rash detective has something to do with the studio's quick interest, and for their swift action putting together a follow-up, I am certainly very grateful.

Gabriele Muccino Helming Keanu Reeves' Sci-Fi Romance Film

Gabriele Muccino

Back in 2008 when the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still showcased Keanu Reeves as the alien Klaatu, it looked like the actor had finally found a role that allowed him to showcase his oddly "out-of-body" acting style that was on display so appropriately in The Matrix. Now Reeves will return to sci-fi, albeit in a completely different light in Passengers, a film described as a love story set on a spaceship which Variety reports Italian filmmaker Gabriele Muccino (Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds) is looking to direct. The sci-fi romance was written by Jon Spaihts who also wrote the upcoming Alien prequel for Ridley Scott.

Brandon's Sundance Review: Eli Craig's Tucker & Dale vs Evil

Tucker & Dale vs Evil

Alan Tudyk was born to play a hillbilly. Well, no, not exactly. He was born to play Wash. But if he was reborn, it'd be to play a hillbilly. Tudyk, who plays Tucker, is one of a pair of hillbillies with hearts of gold who star in Eli Craig's feature writing and directorial debut Tucker & Dale vs Evil. The second half of this backwoods bromance is Dale, played by Tyler Labine, who commands the screen with his cuteness. Yeah, I said it. Labine and Tudyk are adorable together, displaying some of the best chemistry on screen since Rudd and Segel in I Love You Man. Not to mention that they're hilarious. Hell, the entire film is.

Awesome Sundance Posters for Stoner Comedy HIGH School

HIGH School

Hey stoners, put down your bong for just a second and check out these posters! I first came across some of these posters in the press office at Sundance, but just now came across full-size versions of these awesome posters for HIGH School. This is the stoner comedy about a valedictorian who gets his entire high school stoned so that he doesn't get expelled. I caught the world premiere a few days ago and totally loved it (read my review). These posters are dead on perfect for the film and I wouldn't even mind seeing them used for its actual release (when it gets picked up), although I don't think the MPAA will approve them. Now blaze up!

'Philip Morris' Directors to Helm Untitled Steve Carell Project

John Requa and Glenn Ficarra

Back in December, we heard about Warner Brothers big $2 million purchase of an untitled spec script from writer Dan Fogelman (Cars, Fred Claus, Bolt) that was written as a dramatic vehicle for Steve Carell. Now Variety says WB has hired I Love You Philip Morris directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra to helm the project. If you don't recall, the film, which shares shades of the Alan Rickman/Emma Thompson portion of Love Actually, focuses on a father (Carell) whose life begins to unravel while he deals with a marital crisis and tries to manage his relationship with his children. For $2 million, that better be one hell of a crisis.

Sam Worthington Headlining Alex Proyas' Dracula Year Zero

Sam Worthington

After enjoying moderate to mind-blowing success starring in both Terminator Salvation and Avatar, Sam Worthington has yet another tentpole on the horizon with Clash of the Titans (now being released in 3-D on April 2nd). However, no one has been talking about what's next for the breakout actor of 2009. Now we don't have to wonder as Heat Vision confirms a scoop from Latino Review stating that Worthington is in negotiations to play the legendary titular vampire in Alex Proyas' Dracula Year Zero, which explores the origin of Dracula by meshing vampire mythology with the real life history of Prince Vlad the Impaler.

Kevin Greutert Forced From Paranormal Activity 2 Back to Saw 7

Kevin Greutert

Not too long ago we reported that Saw VI director Kevin Greutert was recruited by Paramount to direct Parnormal Activity 2 for an October 22nd release date to battle directly against Lionsgate's Saw VII (or Saw 3-D). But now Lionsgate has made an epic move in the battle for the Halloween box office throne as Deadline Hollywood reports they have exercised an option (established before the production of Saw VI) to install Greutert as director of Saw VII, blocking him from taking on Paranormal Activity 2. Now the gloves are off and the ball is in Paramount's court to figure out how they're going to remedy this crazy situation.

The Future of Brad Bird's 1906 is Still Sadly Quite Uncertain

1906 / Brad Bird

We've heard about Brad Bird's long overdue live-action earthquake project 1906 intermittently once a year for the past three years. In 2007, Bird had mentioned he was working on the film before he joined Ratatouille. In 2008, he confirmed the project would indeed be his next after finishing up that movie for Pixar. And just last year Bird said he was still working on the script and more. Well now it's time for our yearly update and it doesn't look good as Blue Sky Disney is reporting: "Time has kept ticking and it seems no closer to being made than before. There is no official start date." Well, this is just really sad to hear.

Clash of the Titans Will Be 3-D After All, Release Pushed Back

Clash of the Titans

In Hollywood, everyday is 3D day! At the same time Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows was announced as going 3-D, confirmation also came out of the woodworks in that same Heat Vision article that Clash of the Titans will also be released in 3-D. However, to compensate for the time it takes to convert this to 3-D, Titans' release has been pushed back to April 2nd, no longer making it a March blockbuster to follow in the footsteps of 300 and Watchmen. So it sounds like the studio was able to figure out a way to make the 3-D work despite Louis Leterrier's previous statements about an unfriendly timetable for a 3-D release. Read on!
