Robert De Niro Sets Projects with Paul Weitz and Lee Daniels

Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro may be 66, but the veteran actor doesn't look to be inching closer to retirement anytime soon as Deadline Hollywood reports that not only is he signed on to work with Paul Weitz in the adaptation of Nick Flynn's memoir Another [Bullshit] Night in Suck City, but the actor has also hopped on board Lee Daniels' civil rights film Selma, where he'll play Alabama Governor George Wallace one of the political figures who refused to join the rest of the country in dissolving the segregation of blacks and whites. And on top of those, there's development on a potential sequel to Midnight Run, one of De Niro's early comedies.

Green Lantern Movie Will Spend Lots of Time in Outer Space

Green Lantern

While out promoting his new film Edge of Darkness, marking the return of Mel Gibson to the big screen, director Martin Campbell talked with MTV (again) about Green Lantern. This time, the talk was about how much time the film will spend in space since it's an integral part of the story. He explains: "I don't know what the percentage is, but there's quite a bit in space. The initial trip up there, the training sessions he has to go through in order to become a Green Lantern. Then, of course at the end, he goes back up to Oa again. There are a couple of bits [on Earth] in between. I think there will be enough to satisfy everybody."

Two New Posters for M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender

The Last Airbender

With a brand new theatrical trailer and Superbowl TV spot on the way, Paramount has released two new contrasting posters at Yahoo (check them out below), for M. Night Shyamalan's forthcoming adaptation of the Nickelodeon cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Though after passing The Dark Knight as the 2nd highest domestic grossing film of all time (and closing in on Titanic with only about $47 million to go), James Cameron's sci-fi epic pretty much has a lock on the Avatar name, so it looks like "Avatar" has been dropped from its title and is now simply known as The Last Airbender. If you're a fan, you'll dig these.

Sundance 2010 Day 4: Park City at Midnight Reigns Supreme

Eccles Theater

I can't believe it's only Monday! It feels like Sundance began more than a week ago. I've seen 12 films so far and I'm not at all tired yet, but I am wondering what's next. I've seen some great films, some good films, and a few mediocre films, but nothing terrible (thankfully). However, over the last three nights (since the fest kicked off) I've seen three different films from the Park City at Midnight category and they've all be fantastic. Looking back at the fest so far, the line-up in the midnight category is the strongest of the fest this year. I've enjoyed most of the films I've seen in the other categories, but nothing has been just incredible.

Alex's Sundance Review: Floria Sigismondi's The Runaways

The Runaways Review

I never would've thought I could dislike a movie about a badass rock band. I caught the world premiere of The Runaways last night and while it's a very loud and very energetic movie, it's not good at all. It felt very rushed, skipping over all the important moments of the band's creation and throwing in concert scene after concert scene and an occasional streets-of-LA moment. Former photographer Floria Sigismondi makes both her writing and directing debut with The Runaways and is unfortunately the weakest link in the film. She should stick with photography, because it seemed obvious that she doesn't know how to direct a feature.

Sundance 2010 Video Review: Jason Spingarn-Koff's Life 2.0

Life 2.0 Review

Yet another video review courtesy of SlashFilm featuring our own Brandon Lee Tenney. This time he talks about Life 2.0, a documentary playing at Sundance about the virtual online world of Second Life. Directed by first-time feature filmmaker Jason Spingarn-Koff, the doc follows a group of four people whose lives are dramatically transformed by the virtual world - reshaping relationships, identities, and ultimately the very notion of reality. Brandon is also joined in the video by Peter of SlashFilm and Laremy Legel of Film.com. It seems like they all had mixed reactions to the film. Watch the full Life 2.0 Sundance video review below.

Rumor: Gremlins 3 Still Coming & (Surprise) Will Be in 3-D

Gremlins 3-D

We've known for awhile that there have at least been rumblings of a possible return to the little monster movie of the 80's, the Steven Spielberg produced, Joe Dante directed Gremlins. Although Dante himself expressed doubts about the studio (WB) asking him to return after an apparent failure in the direction of the cartoonish Gremlins 2 (which, I don't care what anyone says, I love that goofy movie), there's a chance that the film will be going ahead without him as Market Saw reports that a Gremlins 3 is in the early stages of development and, like everything else these days, the sequel will be bringing the Mogwai into digital 3-D.

The Fourth Kind Director Set for Two New Intriguing Projects

Olatunde Osunsanmi

Despite the fact that The Fourth Kind failed to draw in the box office or critical acclaim, director Olatunde Osunsanmi has lined up two interesting projects for the future. First, Variety reports he's set to direct The Commuter, a script from Byron Willinger & Philip De Blasi which follows a man's deadly commute from work in New York City. Sounds like a Hitchcockian, wrong-place-at-the-wrong-time kind of story, and for some reason makes me think of that commercial featuring the dangerous Stunt City. In addition Osunsanmi, has been tapped to write, and potentially direct an adaptation of the yet-to-be-released video game Zero-G.

James Marsden and Russell Brand Join the Comedy 'I Hop'

James Marsden / Russell Brand

No, there isn't a food service comedy poking fun at the International House of Pancakes on the way. THR's report refers to James Marsden and Russell Brand joining I Hop, a live-action/CGI hybrid comedy that follows Fred (Marsden) an out-of-work slacker who accidentally injures the Easter Bunny (voiced by Brand) and must take him in as he recovers. As Fred struggles with the world's worst houseguest, both will learn what it takes to finally grow up. Directed by Tim Hill (Alvin and the Chipmunks), this sounds like another Kangaroo Jack waiting to happen but with writer Brian Lynch involved, I can't help but be interested.

Composer Howard Shore to Score The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Howard Shore / Twilight Saga: Eclipse

No matter how much hate is thrown at The Twilight Saga, you can't deny that the franchise has reeled in its fair share of talent. Not only have they brought in talented and acclaimed actors like Dakota Fanning, Anna Kendrick, and Michael Sheen, but it's brought in gifted composers like Alexandre Desplat to write music for the vampire romance. Now the saga has upped their game even further as Movie Score Magazine reports that Howard Shore (responsible for the Oscar winning music from the Lord of the Rings trilogy) has been brought on to compose the score for the third forthcoming installment in the series - Eclipse. Read on!

First Big Sundance Sale: Lionsgate Buys Ryan Reynolds' Buried

Buried

Big news tonight for those who are anxious to see Buried. Variety has confirmed that the first big acquisition at the Sundance Film Festival this year is for Rodrigo Cortés's Buried. Brandon and I were at the world premiere of Buried last night where the film received quite a bit of positive buzz (read Alex's review) after it ended. Buried stars Ryan Reynolds as a a private contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and buried alive. If you haven't already heard, the entire film takes place inside of a coffin, and despite watching 94 minutes of one guy in a coffin, it's actually an incredible film. Variety says other major sales are in the works as well.
