Angelina Jolie & Darren Aronofsky On for 'Serena' Adaptation
February 28, 2010
by Ethan Anderton
After we heard news last week that Angelina Jolie had dropped out of Wanted 2, it looked like she might step into a project with Alfonso Cuaron instead. However, now news comes from THR that Jolie has another project in the works with another high profile director, Darren Aronofsky. The trade reports they are both in discussions to work on an adaptation of Serena, the 2008 Ron Rash novel which follows a man named George Pemberton and his new bride, Serena, as they move to North Carolina to create a timber empire. But apparently the script, written by Nick Weschler (The Road) needs more work before this moves forward.
The story takes a strange turn when Serena not only takes to the woods, but she also pushes her husband to commit more and more ruthless acts. When she learns that she cannot bear a child, Serena then sets out to murder the son her husband fathered illegitimately. Sounds like a very intense and intimate story. Weschler is no stranger to adaptations having also written the scripts for The Time Traveler's Wife and Reservation Road. While the role seems like an interesting one for Jolie, there's still a chance she could take on Cuaron's sci-fi project Gravity or another recently announced adaptation of the mystery series Scarpetta before this.
Either way, with nothing lined up after she completes shooting on Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Tourist (you can see early set photos of her shooting that right here), she should be making a decision very soon. Her attachment will probably make financing easier, but of course Aronofsky isn't a filmmaker to wait around for actors anymore, as we all saw with The Wrestler. Stay tuned for further developments on Serena.

Darren, RoboCop needs attention first. If only you could start production on this project. After that, the world's biggest heist sounds far more interesting. But Aronofsky + Jolie isn't bad either.

I'm glad to see Jolie getting more and more work, She can act and she really does not get enough credit.

I hope she says yes. She's been picking more and more interesting products the last few years and that a good thing. I agree she doesn't get enough credit.
