Shane Black Directing Sony's Pulp Comics 'Doc Savage' Movie
The Man of Bronze is headed to the big screen! It was discovered late last year that Shane Black, writer of great 80s films like The Monster Squad, Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang as well, would be writing the script for a Doc Savage movie in the works at Columbia Pictures (aka Sony). Variety is now reporting that Black will also be directing the movie (only his second time) from a script he's writing with newcomers Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry. Neal Moritz and Ori Marmur, of Green Hornet and Battle: L.A., will be producing through Mortitz' Original Film production company.

Thandie Newton, Jason Isaacs, David Tennant Cast in 'Retreat'
Fresh off the recent star-studded BAFTA awards night in the United Kingdom, an impressive trio of British actors have assembled as ScreenDaily reports that Thandie Newton, Jason Isaacs and David Tennant have signed on to star in the psychological thriller Retreat. Produced by UK's Magnet Films and directed by freshman filmmaker Carl Tibbetts, the story revolves around a couple (Newton & Isaacs) who are seeking to rebuild their relationship by taking time out on a remote island until suddenly a military man (Tennant) shows up on their doorstep half-dead telling them there is a lethal virus killing millions on the mainland.

Fox Grabs Rights to 'The Fourth Realm Trilogy' Sci-Fi Series
Toss this one onto the ever-growing pile of adaptations from intriguing science fiction novels, as THR reports that Fox has picked up the rights to John Twelve Hawks' series of novels known as The Fourth Realm Trilogy, with Watchmen co-writer Alex Tse set to write the script. Compared to Star Wars and The Matrix (two insanely popular franchises, go figure) the first book, The Traveler, is set in a US society run by a secret organization seeking to control the population via constant observation. Seeking to rebel against these constraints are an almost extinct group of people called Travelers. So I guess it's like Matrix after all.

Bruce Willis Says We Might See Die Hard 5 Sometime Soon?
Oh no, not another one. Bruce Willis is out talking to press this week for Kevin Smith's Cop Out, which hits theaters on Friday, and of course he was asked about the Die Hard franchise, since that's one franchise people still seem to love (even though the last one sucked). MTV asked him if there's a chance we'll see a Die Hard 5 and Willis says it might happen, but there aren't many details to give right now. But he does have some ideas. "I would hire Len Wiseman right now," he says, referring to the Live Free or Die Hard director. Personally, I would rather he not be hired because I believe he screwed up the last one, but that's just me.

Ian McShane to Play Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean 4
Following in the footsteps of Geoffrey Rush, Bill Nighy and Chow Yun-Fat as villains in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was always going to be quite an undertaking, but it looks like Rob Marshall found the right man for the job as THR reports that Ian McShane (Death Race, Hot Rod) will play the villainous, legendary pirate Blackbeard (or rather Edward Teach) in the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides. One of the most notorious and feared pirates, Blackbeard sailed the high seas in his trademark ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge. This is perfect casting and has me slightly more interested in the next Pirates adventure.

Brandon's Report: On the Set of A Nightmare on Elm Street
So, I moved to Elm Street; it didn't last. But let me start at the beginning.
Last June, I took a little trip to Chicago. Just outside the city, in a large, dank warehouse, Platinum Dune's latest re-imagining of a classic horror movie was being filmed--part of it, at least. And the setting begot the proper mood. That early in the morning, it's as if I was either just coming out of a dream, or was being tricked by Freddy himself, still dreaming under his power. Either way, the journey had only just begun.

Watch This: Sleek Cyberpunk Teaser for Indie Film Frame 137
You gotta check this out! From ours friends at SlashFilm comes a teaser trailer for a new independent film called Frame 137, written and directed by Judd Tilyard. It's a sci-fi action film based on the work of James O'Barr, creator of The Crow, and made with his permission. It's kind of a punk, neo-noir, action flick and it looks interesting, to say the least. The craziest part is it's shot on the RED camera using a Lomo Anamorphic Lens which makes it look like it was shot Cinemascope, so it's extremely wide. It's based on a comic that first appeared in Dark Horse Presents and was expanded into a short before Tilyard turned it into a feature film.

Kevin James Joins Vince Vaughn & Ron Howard's New Comedy
Back at the beginning of the new year we got word that Ron Howard would be directing a new untitled infidelity comedy starring Vince Vaughn as a man who learns that his friend's wife is cheating and must then navigate treacherous waters to decide what do with that knowledge. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the other male side of this equation will be filled in by Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop). James & Vaughn will play business partners and best friends in this idea that came from Howard's producing partner Brian Grazer, which was then turned into a script from in-demand Wall Street 2 screenwriter Allan Loeb.

Richard Pryor Biopic with Marlon Wayans is Shooting this Fall
Back in October of last year it was announced that comedic actor Marlon Wayans would be playing the legendary stand up comic Richard Pryor in a biopic about Pryor. The role was originally supposed to go to Eddie Murphy, but turns out he just wasn't right for the job. The LA Times just published a huge profile piece on Marlon Wayans tonight that focuses on how prepared he is and perfect he is for this sort of role-of-a-lifetime. It's a good piece and I'm glad to hear that they're moving forward with Wayans in place. "I want to be in dramas, I want to produce, I want to write and I want to prove I can handle a role such as this one."

Natalie Portman Developing Stoner Comedy Titled 'Best Buds'
If you didn't know, Natalie Portman started a production company called Handsomecharlie Films a few years ago to develop projects that better "suited her tastes." One of their first films, Hesher, just premiered at Sundance. Pajiba reports that Portman is now developing a stoner comedy at Handsomecharlie called Best Buds. She will produce and star in the project that's said to be in the same vein as Harold & Kumar and Half-Baked. The story centers on two best female friends who take a road trip to their friend's wedding in order to save her by bringing her weed. I've already heard more than enough about this, I'm totally in.

Former Pixar Animator Joins Laika's Next Stop-Motion Flick
Laika Entertainment enjoyed reasonable success with their first feature, Henry Selick's stop-motion adaptation Coraline, but more recently the animation studio has had its fair share of bad news with Selick leaving the studio last October just after the shut-down of their computer animation division, which meant lost jobs for over 120 employees. However, with a focus solely on stop-motion animation, THR says they finally decided their next project will be Little White Lie based on an original idea by former Pixar writer and director Jan Pinkava, which he'll write with Chris McCoy who had a script on last year's Black List.
