Oren Moverman Hired to Re-Work Kurt Cobain Biopic Script

Kurt Cobain

While it's always sad when a genuine talent passes, it's even more disheartening when said talent changed the face of their respective medium, and how our culture will never know the lengths to which our hearts and minds could have been moved. Such is the case with the legendary, late musician Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the rock band Nirvana who changed the face of alternative music well past his years. Now comes word that Cobain will get his due diligence in the form of a gestating biopic which THR's RiskyBiz reports will be re-written and directed by Oren Moverman whose script for The Messenger is Oscar nominated.

Ben Affleck & Matt Damon Get First Look Deal at Warner Bros

Ben Affleck & Matt Damon

It's hard to believe it's been 13 years since superstars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck made a huge break onto the writing scene with their Oscar winning script for Good Will Hunting, which also served as a huge stepping stone to the mostly lucrative acting careers each of them have enjoyed. Now the two are anxious to rekindle the creative fire they once shared together as NY Mag's Vulture and THR report they are re-forming their old production company in a new venture with a first look production deal at Warner Bros. As of now it's unclear if this new venture will still take on their old Live Planet name or if this is a completely new flag.

Carla Gugino Replacing Salma Hayek in the Thriller 'Faster'

Carla Gugino

Back in a January edition of our Casting Tidbits we reported that the voluptuous Salma Hayek would be taking on a role in the George Tillman directed, Joe and Tony Gayton written, revenge/heist thriller Faster. However, at the end of last month, in the midst of all the Sundance madness, Hayek dropped out of the project due to scheduling issues leaving an open spot for a new female cast member which Variety says has just been filled by another vixen, Watchmen's original Silk Spectre, the lovely Carla Gugino. She'll play a detective, hot on Dwayne Johnson's revenge trail and hell-bent on connecting the killings of an old case.

Updates on Frank Miller's Ronin From Director Sylvain White

Sylvain White / Ronin

Way, way back in '07, before 300 had even opened, it was discovered that Sylvain White (director of only Stomp the Yard at the time) had attached himself to an adaptation of Frank Miller's Ronin, which was exciting at the time because everyone wanted to know what the next awesome Frank Miller movie might be (and this was before The Spirit). Well, we haven't heard all that much since then, but Sylvain White did give us an update last September talking about the design of the movie and how awesome it'll be, but no update on its status. However, SuperHeroHype finally caught up with White and got a good update on its progress.

Gary Ross Bringing Phantom Tollbooth Back to the Big Screen

The Phantom Tollbooth

Now this sounds like fun! Pajiba is reporting that Gary Ross, director of Pleasantville and Seabiscuit as well as being Tobey Maguire's friend and producer, is developing a remake of The Phantom Tollbooth at Warner Brothers. The project will be a "hybrid live-action/animated fantasy remake" with a first draft of the script written by Alex Tse (of Watchmen). The original Phantom Tollbooth was an animated feature film from 1970 directed by Chuck Jones and based on the children's book by Norman Juster. As much as I'd wish this would be like Where the Wild Things Are, I don't think that's the kind of hybrid they're talking about.

Universal Warming Up a Whole New Batch of 'American Pie'

American Pie

Universal knows that if one thing is consistent in teenage culture today, it's that hormones will always be raging, and thus, there will always be an audience ready for some home-cooked, raunchy American Pie. At least that's what the studio is banking on, as LA Times' 24 Frames reports they are looking to re-bake an American Pie franchise. Going by the clever moniker American Pie 4, the film does have the interest of some of the original cast members, but it's still early in development and no deals are in place. After a series of terrible American Pie straight-to-DVD films, I think I speak for everyone when I say, enough is enough!

John Hughes Will Receive His Own Tribute During the Oscars

John Hughes

While some find the Oscars show hard to endure in itself, for me, the most heart wrenching portion of the program is seeing the montage of all the cinematic greats we've lost over the past year. It inspires sad, yet fond memories of the times we spent enjoying them in front of or behind the camera. One such loss will be isolated from the usual "in memoriam" clips as Deadline Hollywood reports that the late filmmaker John Hughes will receive his own special tribute with film clips and cast members who've worked with him including hosts Steve Martin (Planes, Trains & Automobiles) and Alec Baldwin (She's Having a Baby).

Jeremy Renner Joins McTeigue's Raven, Circling Battleship

Jeremy Renner

He may win an Oscar in a few weeks, but even if he doesn't, Jeremy Renner has had a fantastic breakout year. He was rumored to potentially play Hawkeye in Marvel's Thor, but that never panned out. However, he has a few other big deals in the works. NY Times did a profile on some of this year's Oscar nominees and talked a little bit with Renner, who revealed that he's cast in James McTeigue's Raven and also that he's "in talks with Universal and director Peter Berg about taking the lead role in Battleship." He's also had "no fewer than five meetings to star in another project," but won't reveal what it is. Maybe that was Hawkeye?

Christoph Waltz Replacing Sean Penn in Water for Elephants

Christoph Waltz / Water for Elephants

It sounds like Sean Penn is having a bit of trouble coming back from his recent self-imposed break from acting as Deadline Hollywood reports that the deal for him to star in Francis Lawrence's adaptation of Sara Gruen's novel Water for Elephants slipped through the cracks and has been picked up by Christoph Waltz who is sweeping the awards circuit for his amazing performance as Col. Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds. Waltz will play the husband of the star of a 2nd-rate traveling circus, a dangerous paranoid schizophrenic animal trainer who is as mean to his wife as he is to the circus creatures. That's a bingo!

Hugh Jackman Officially Starring in the Comedy 'Avon Man'

Hugh Jackman

Though we all love Hugh Jackman as the adamantium clawed mutant Wolverine, the man is quite a true talent harboring not only a ripped, action man's physique and prowess, but a flashy, singing and dancing machine fit for Broadway. It's good to see an actor take on such diversity at opposite ends of the spectrum. Now Jackman will be taking another leap into comedy as Production Weekly confirms rumblings we heard last July that he will star in the Kevin Lima (Enchanted) directed comedy Avon Man, the story of a car salesman who loses his job and turns reluctantly to sales of Avon cosmetics to make ends meet. How fun.

Casting: Jeffrey Dean Morgan in The Fields, Bynes in Hall Pass

Jeffrey Dean Morgan / Amanda Bynes

Two recent projects we've been hearing a decent amount about each gained a new cast member as Bloody Disgusting reports (and Variety confirms) Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) will join Sam Worthington in the murder mystery The Fields (formerly the Texas Killing Fields) as the detective who is transplanted from New York to this gruesome on-going Texas series of murders. Meanwhile, Variety also reports that Amanda Bynes will star alongside Owen Wilson, Jenna Fischer, and Jason Sudeikis in the new Farrelly Brothers comedy titled Hall Pass, the story about a wife who gives her husband a "hall pass" for adultery.

Jason Reitman Programs a Week of Films at the New Beverly

Jason Reitman

This is mainly for those who live in the Los Angeles area, otherwise it'll be hard to attend. Oscar nominated director Jason Reitman is programming a week of films (six in total) at the New Beverly Cinema in Hollywood. Other filmmakers like Edgar Wright, Eli Roth, and Rian Johnson have all programmed line-ups at the New Beverly and Reitman's selections look great. I just received an email earlier today reminding me that "this will be a great opportunity to see these films projected in 35mm on the big screen. These are six films that have inspired me to no end. If you haven't see one or more, I highly recommend you join me."
