'Modern Family's' Jason Winer Directing the 'Arthur' Remake
March 1, 2010
by Ethan Anderton
Since we're solely concerned with the movers, shakers and activity in the film industry, there's usually not that much opportunity to discuss film's little sister: the television. Fortunately, some recent news will let me praise and direct your attention to one of the best comedy series on television as THR reports that director Jason Winer (seen above), who directed the pilot and nine episodes of ABC's "Modern Family," has signed on to direct Russell Brand in the remake of the classic 1981 Dudley Moore comedy Arthur. This was first announced back in 2008 and has a script written by Peter Baynham, who helped write Borat and Brüno.
There just might be hope for this remake after all. With a bold and daring comic such as Brand, and a writer who is all too familiar with dirty comedy working with a director responsible for one of the funniest family sitcoms in recent years, I can't help but get a little excited. Still, these three have very big shoes to fill as the original movie, which followed a boozy playboy rascal who is set to inherit a fortune if he marries an heiress his family thinks will make something out of him, earned Dudley Moore and writer/director Steve Gordon Oscar nominations, and supporting actor John Gielgud even won one. Maybe this could turn out okay?

christ.. are there no more original ideas left..
rather than come up with anything new, we have to sit through someone's reimagining of a classic film.
I get the impression that the mad race to the middle in hollywood starts with a producer logged into netflix scanning through their movie list deciding which film to "reboot" or "remake"
i guess they will literally do anything for a buck in hollywood except create an original work.

I actually always wanted this movie remade, but I didn't think it would ever be done.People just don't think alcoholism is funny anymore. And before all the a-holes get on me for this,no I don't think alcoholism is funny but in the context of a MOVIE (Arthur) it's funny stuff.

Modern Family is indeed genius. It saved the sitcom. Never before have I seen something take someone who I thought was so decidedly unfunny and make them hilarious (the guy who plays the dad).
