Barry Pepper Joining the Cast of the Coen Brothers' True Grit
March 12, 2010
by Alex Billington
This is some great news! Variety is reporting that Barry Pepper is the latest to join the cast of the Coen Brothers' remake of the western True Grit, which also stars Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. Pepper will play the role of "Lucky" Ned Pepper, the notorious outlaw played by Robert Duvall in Henry Hathaway's 1969 classic. The story follows a tough U.S. Marshal (Bridges) who helps a stubborn young woman (Steinfeld) track down her father's murderer (Brolin). Scott Rudin and the Coens are producing, and Steven Spielberg is executive producing. Shooting is already under way in New Mexico.
Barry Pepper has lead an interesting career and I enjoy seeing him in any movie. His high point was in the 90's with three great back-to-back roles: Saving Private Ryan, Enemy of the State, and The Green Mile. But then he got caught up in the Battlefield Earth aftermath and started appearing in only the occasional war movie (We Were Soldiers, Flags of Our Fathers) and other low level films that didn't really go anywhere. He also appeared in Seven Pounds but that didn't do anything either. He's got the face of a war movie character, but I love seeing him in all kinds of movies. And now he's taking on a western and I'm looking forward to it!

Pepper has had a bad past but has always put out a solid performance, I'm happy and excited to see how the Coen Brothers push his already enjoyable talents on screen. Good news indeed.

I've enjoyed Pepper's performances in the past, and I think he'll do well with the excellent talent he has surrounding him for this film. Greatness surrounding promotes greatness within.

Barry Pepper is awesome. He will always be the sniper from Saving Private Ryan for me, tho.

Pepper was the second lead in Tommy Lee Jone's The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and he carried the role extraordinarily well. His acting style fits with the Western setting and if you surround him with stellar actors like Damon, Brolin and Bridges, he should be great.

He was great in Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, and Knockaround guys, not to mention his performance in 25th Hour, so this is a great casting move.

Remember that this guy was in Battlefield Earth and that can never be forgiven.
Also, Travolta made it a point of only casting "believers abd subscribers" which makes him, Pepper and the other actors (and crew?) deluded nutters who cannot be taken seriously.
At least Sam Worthington is not in this, for a change.

What are you talking about?

@15, I think he/she was referring to Barry Pepper next to John Wayne's image, as though there was a comparison.
But Romper Stomper?
Never heard of that one.

Romper Stomper was a low budget Aussie film from the early 90's and featured a real young, and not fat-assed, Russell Crowe.
IMBD said that Sharon Stone launched his USA film career by getting h a role in The Quick And The Dead after she saw him in the Aussie film.
I never knew that but Crowe, like Stone, are past their use-by date anyway.
Sharon Stone saved Russell Crowe from a career on Neighbours!
That's actually friggin hilarious and shows he wasn't always the big shot he makes out that he is.
IMBD dude, it's the real bible.
