Scorsese on Getting Back to His Roots and That Sinatra Biopic

Martin Scorsese

There's no doubt in my mind that Shutter Island is the best movie of 2010 so far. Obviously, that's not all that great of an exclamation since it's only March, and the movie line-up from January until sometime in April is usually littered with all of the junk that isn't good enough for the summer blockbuster time or fall's awards season. But still, it was a nice departure from the rest of the garbage in theaters right now. Recently, ShortList (via SlashFilm) had the chance to sit down with director Martin Scorsese and they talked about his approach to the Frank Sinatra biopic, filmmaking in the 70s, and getting back to gritty street-movies.

Joaquin Phoenix Might Return to Acting as Edgar Allen Poe?

Joaquin Phoenix / The Beautiful Cigar Girl

By now everyone knows that Joaquin Phoenix quit acting a few years ago to grow a simply amazing bird's nest of a beard (seen above) and presumably fall into obscurity. However, fans of Phoenix may be excited to hear that he may be making a return to acting after all. The Mumbai Mirror (via The Playlist) recently spoke with sound recordist Resul Pookutty who said, "I couldn't be happier because I am doing a period film. It's an adaptation of The Beautiful Cigar Girl by Daniel Stashower and based on an eerie real-life experience of author Edgar Allen Poe which happened just months before his death. Joaquin plays Edgar Allen Poe."

Director Phillip Noyce Taking on Spy Film 'Wenceslas Square'

Phillip Noyce

After seeing the kick-ass trailer for this summer's Angelina Jolie action vehicle Salt, I realized how great it's going to be having director Phillip Noyce return to a spy film of this caliber again. Over the last decade, his directing gigs have been relatively low key and not really action-packed, but with previous turns on films like Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, and The Saint, there's no doubt he's very comfortable in the genre. So it's good to hear news from Variety that Noyce is set to direct Wenceslas Square, a spy thriller which is about a young CIA officer and a beautiful Czech spy who meet in Prague during the Cold War era.

Lone Scherfig Interested in Hathaway & Sturgess for 'One Day'

Anne Hathaway & Jim Sturgess

Though last weekend's Academy Awards didn't see fit to send any love to An Education, you can't deny that director Lone Scherfig crafted one hell of a drama and brought out the best in Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard. Last December, after An Education had made the festival rounds and hit limited theaters, we learned that Scherfig would be directing the romantic comedy One Day, and now ComingSoon discovers that Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess are attached to this story, about Dexter and Emma, who meet for the first time during their graduation in 1988, and proceed to meet one day every year for the next 20 years.

Jason Bateman Will 'Change Up' Bodies with Ryan Reynolds

Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds

After making waves with last summer's breakout comedy hit The Hangover, writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore are riding their success right into another big comedy as THR reports Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman have both signed on to star in Change Up, a new film from Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin which revisits the old body switcheroo concept again for a story that sees a responsible family man (Bateman) switching bodies with his lazy, man-child of a best friend (Reynolds). I do like the idea of these two being in a movie together, but, seriously, how many different iterations of this old premise do we need?

This is some great news! Variety is reporting that Barry Pepper is the latest to join the cast of the Coen Brothers' remake of the western True Grit, which also stars Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. First Look: Pixar's Short 'Day & Night' Showing This Summer

Pixar's New Short Day & Night

As is tradition at Pixar, the studio will be debuting a new short film in front of Toy Story 3 this summer from one of their own artists. This year's short is called Day & Night and is the directorial debut of Teddy Newton, a storyboard artist on The Iron Giant and character designer for The Incredibles and Presto, too. ComingSoon has revealed our very first look at the short by way of this interesting advertising banner (seen below). This isn't official confirmed, but both SlashFilm and I think that this may actually be a 2D animated film about these two characters, and it looks quite wonderful, as always. Check out the new first look below!

Watch This: Official Theatrical Trailer for Shrek Forever After

Shrek Forever After Trailer

DreamWorks Animation has debuted the full-length theatrical trailer for Shrek Forever After today to give you a taste of what's coming this summer. The first teaser trailer arrived in December but we haven't seen much since. With DreamWorks' other new movie, How to Train Your Dragon, opening in a few more weeks, marketing will definitely be ramping up for Shrek Forever After as well, since it's their big sunmer movie. I can't tell you how happy I am knowing that this is the last Shrek movie we'll see (besides a Puss in Boots spin-off). I'm just tired of these movies. It doesn't look that bad, just doesn't look that great either.

Hugo Weaving in Talks to Play Red Skull in Captain America!

Hugo Weaving / Red Skull

Marvel Studios may not have yet figured out who will take on the role of The First Avenger: Captain America, despite being passed the March 1st deadline Joe Johnston said was in place for casting, but it looks like they're in the process of locking down a villain as Heat Vision reports Hugo Weaving is in talks to play Cap's arch nemesis Red Skull who has always been at odds with the hero since 1941 when he stood with Hitler, partaking in espionage and sabotage against the United States. However, nothing is official yet as Heat Vision says negotiations are in a "delicate stage" and will conclude in the next day or so. Read on!

Steven Spielberg Might Direct the Robopocalypse Movie Next

Robopocalypse / Steven Spielberg

Back in November, Spielberg's DreamWorks picked up the yet-to-be-finished story Robopocalypse from writer Daniel H. Wilson (the same author behind another robot-focused book - How to Survive a Robot Uprising). The project seemed like it would be a ways off since Wilson hasn't even finished writing the book, but Deadline Hollywood reports Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard is currently hard at work on the script and his involvement has made it a serious contender for Steven Spielberg to take on as his next directing gig. Of course, this is all speculation, since Robopocalypse is one of a plethora of projects he's considering.

Sam Worthington is British Hero Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future

Sam Worthington

It seems like pretty much every other week since Avatar rocked out at the box office, breakout Australian actor Sam Worthington is rumored to be joining another project. The increasingly reliable Pajiba (who also broke the recently confirmed news of Worthington joining The Fields) is now reporting that the human action figure is looking to sign on to a potential franchise as the British sci-fi comic book hero Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future, chief pilot of the Interplanet Space Fleet. Although he's not a super-hero, he's pulled off exceptional piloting and often proved extraordinarily lucky, not to mention he also kicks ass at jiu jitsu.

John Cho Says 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas' is Coming

Harold & Kumar

For as much complaining as we do about unnecessary sequels, sometimes a comedy comes along that works fine by itself, and a seemingly unneeded sequel surprisingly delivers just as well as the first did. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle was one such comedy that seemed like a one trick pony until Harold & Kumar Go to Guantanamo Bay came through with the funny once again. Apparently it was successful enough for yet another new sequel, which John Cho (Harold) recently revealed to Collider will be titled A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas. Because who doesn't secretly wish they were stoned while home for the holidays?
