Oscars Recap: Best Thank You Speeches & Other Highlights!

Kathryn Bigelow Holding Oscars

"It’s the moment of a lifetime," seems to be the Quote of the Oscars this year. Last night, Kathryn Bigelow (photo above) and her film The Hurt Locker took home a total of six Oscars, including for Best Director and Best Picture. There are already all kinds of backlash and appreciative articles hitting everywhere around the web, as expected, so I'll let everyone else debate about the winners. Instead, I always love to talk a little bit about the show and highlights from it, since it's usually quite entertaining. However, I thought this year's show lacked a bit of the "spectacle" compared to last year. Though there were still plenty of great moments!

Keanu Reeves Hints at a New Bill & Ted Movie in the Works?

Keanu Reeves - Bill & Ted

The only semblance of news so far to come from celebrity-filled red carpet at the Oscars last night, seems to be this speculative story from our friends at MTV. The TV station caught up Keanu Reeves (who was there to introduce The Hurt Locker because he starred in Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break) and told him, jokingly, that they should greenlight a sequel to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Instead of a comedic response, Reeves replied with "we're trying, we're trying." Given the lighter atmosphere of the red carpet, MTV's Josh Horowitz then asked Reeves if he was joking: "I'm not." So could it be more than just a rumor? "We'll see."

Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless Returns to Theaters in Summer

Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless

Not all of the great films that have become icons of cinema's history are given the pomp and circumstance of a theatrical re-release in celebration of its, presumably, long-lasting impact on the film industry. However, one such film is getting that special treatment, and it's not even a film made in the US, or for that matter, by an American filmmaker. Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (aka À bout de souffle) is being given the honor of a theatrical re-release in celebration of its 50th anniversary (news via Variety). The New Wave film was heralded as a groundbreaking innovation in filmmaking with its gritty cinematography and hyper jump cuts.

Must Watch: Second Official Trailer for Marvel's Iron Man 2!

Iron Man 2 Trailer

"I am Iron Man!" Robert Downey Jr. appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night following the Oscars to debut this brand new trailer for Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2 which you can watch below! We all saw the first trailer for Iron Man 2 in December and although that looked awesome, I have to say, this trailer looks even better. We finally get to see lots of plot details in this, including more of Scarlett Johansson and a bit about how Sam Rockwell (as Justin Hammer) meets Mickey Rourke (as Whiplash). There are so many awesome scenes in this, I can't freakin' wait! What a way to kick off the summer. Watch the trailer below and enjoy!

Indie Trailer Sunday: The Art of the Steal Heist Documentary

The Art of the Steal Trailer

I love a good heist movie. And I'm sure most of you do, too. But this here is no ordinary heist movie. The Art of the Steal is a documentary about "the biggest heist of our time" that tells the true story of a multi-billion dollar art heist and "how they got away with it." The doc follows the political struggle for control of Dr. Albert C. Barnes' $25 billion collection of modern and post-impressionist art. I'm now too familiar with the story, which is why I'm even more interested in checking this out. I hope, just like The Cove, that they get into some controversial territory. This trailer sets it up beautifully as well, so I'll let it speak for itself.

Director Craig Gillespie Might Helm the Fright Night Remake

Fright Night

Yes, another remake, but this one actually has some potential. The LA Times is reporting that Lars and the Real Girl director Craig Gillespie may have landed the job of directing DreamWorks' new Fright Night remake. This DreamWorks is the one run by Steven Spielberg, not Jeffrey Katzenberg. Gillespie is only "in negotiations" at the moment, but is the one they're going with after narrowing it down to three directors (the other two were not identified). Gillespie doesn't have any horror experience yet, but that doesn't mean he's not a good choice. I was hoping Mike Dougherty would've gotten the job, but that was a bit of a pipe dream.

Check This Out: First Annual 'Fangirl Awards' Winners List

First Annual Fangirl Awards

Although we don't have any female writers on our site yet, there are lots of female movie fans and bloggers out there. A group of about 50 of them decided to start a Fangirl Academy which, every year starting this year, picks their own 'best of the year', known as the Fangirl Awards - like the Oscars, but with a group of fangirls. I'm featuring the awards because we're friends with a few members. Our own Brandon Tenney's sister Elycia is a member (@barricadestay) and so are plenty of our colleagues and friends, like Genevieve (@scarletscribe), Jen (@jenyamato) and Amanda (@eruditechick). Read on to see a list of their winners.

Watch This: Trailer for Barry Munday Starring Patrick Wilson

Barry Munday Trailer

I was asked to feature this trailer for Chris D'Arienzo's new film Barry Munday and after watching it, I actually think it looks pretty damn good. I was about halfway through watching it, and I was thinking that it looked okay, wasn't too funny, but when I realized it was actually Patrick Wilson in the lead role, it totally changed my opinion. For the first half I couldn't even tell it was him. He doesn't even look the same and his voice is totally different! That said, this doens't look like anything incredible, but I'm curious and I want to check it out in hopes that it's an enjoyable indie flick at least. Let us know if you think this looks good, too?

Independent Spirit Awards - Precious Director Lee Daniels

The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring plenty of those little indies which deserve the honor and recognition that they won't necessarily be receiving at the Oscars. The winners were announced tonight at an awards ceremony held in Downtown Los Angeles (different from the beach this year). Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire won all 5 awards in all of the categories that it was nominated for, sweeping the Spirit Awards this year, including the coveted Best Feature award. A lot of other great indie film winners can be found below, so read on for the complete list!

Badass Red Band Trailer for Harry Brown with Michael Caine

Harry Brown Red Band Trailer

Now this is a trailer you'll definitely want to see. Harry Brown is the new British film that's sort of like Taken but with Michael Caine (Alfred!) instead of Liam Neeson. We ran a trailer for it last year but this one is now an official trailer from IGN and it's red band, too. If you're wondering why it's red band, I think it's because of the violence and the marijuana seen growing in the background in a few scenes. Other than that, there's probably not much else that makes this R-rated anyway. I love the build-up in this trailer, so intense, so awesome, I can't frickin' wait to see it! Who's with me on this one? Am I the only one excited?

Oscar Thank You Speeches Montage Video - Thankful Oscars

Oscar Thank You Speech

Ah yes, the infamous thank you speech. A very important part of the Academy Awards legacy, wouldn't you say? This year the producers of the Oscars are trying to get winners to minimize the length of their speeches so that they can keep the show from getting boring. But before we see this year's thank yous, I've got a fun video to share with you this Oscar weekend. It comes from our friends at Vulture (via In Contention) and is a "Hypnotic Montage of Oscar Thank-Yous" that, in 73 seconds, runs through a whole bunch of thank you speeches, but only just the names. This should definitely put you in the Oscar mood! Watch this below.
