Sound Off: Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass - What Did You Think?
Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Its been exactly 2 years, 27 days since we first learned that Matthew Vaughn would be adapting John Romita Jr and Mark Millar's ultra-violent comic book series Kick-Ass. The finished movie arrives in theaters this weekend and it's time to hear your thoughts about it. How does it compare to the comics? Is it better or worse? Is the movie as awesome as everyone is saying it is? Is Hit Girl the best character in the movie? Was Roger Ebert wrong to give it 1 star in his review? Or is it not that good? If you've seen it, then leave a comment below and let us know what you thought of Kick-Ass!

Paul Verhoeven's Baby Thriller 'Surrogate' is Still in the Works
Earlier this week we wrote about a new project that director Paul Verhoeven (seen above) is working on (an adaptation of the video game The Last Express), but we weren't sure if that meant he was ditching his other project The Surrogate. Announced last year, The Surrogate is a thriller about a couple desperate to have a child who find themselves in an unbearable position when they find out the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane. Not the most interesting concept, but in the hands of Verhoeven, you never know. MTV ran new quotes from their recent chat with Verhoeven and word is The Surrogate is still in the works.

Interview: Kick-Ass Screenwriter & Director Matthew Vaughn
Earlier this week I finally got the chance to interview a director that I've been waiting years and years to talk with - Matthew Vaughn. Not only did he previously direct Layer Cake and Stardust, but he's the brilliant British filmmaker who decided to adapt Kick-Ass into the badass R-rated independent comic book movie that it is. If you remember, Vaughn financed the movie on his own and helped pen the script with his writing partner Jane Goldman and creator Mark Millar. Not only did we talk plenty about Kick-Ass, but Vaughn and I also talked about comic book movies, his thoughts on 3D, how great the films in the 70's were, and more.

Ennis' Apocalyptic Horror Comic 'Crossed' is Getting Adapted
Even though we're still waiting to find out how well Kick-Ass does this weekend, it's already started to have an impact on the industry. Variety reports that producers Michael De Luca, Jason Netter and Kevin Spacey's Trigger Street Prods are trying to find independent financing for an adaptation of Garth Ennis' apocalyptic horror comic book series Crossed. As you know, Kick-Ass was financed independently by Vaughn and not sold to any studio until it was 100% finished. If it's a big success this weekend (which I think it will be), we might see this development tactic more often, as it gives the filmmakers (not the studio) complete control.

Dimension Remaking Richard Curtis' Bernard and the Genie
I just re-watched Pirate Radio (or rather, The Boat That Rocked) on Blu-Ray a few days ago and enjoyed it as much as when I first saw it. I love Richard Curtis, he's one of my favorite British directors. He started his entertainment industry career as a screenwriter and one of his scripts was a 1991 television movie called Bernard and the Genie. You probably know why I'm telling you about this - because they're remaking it. Pajiba is reporting that Dimension Films is going to turn Bernard and the Genie into a feature film. Richard Curtis is at least producing and has written the feature script, but won't be directing it (as far as we know).

Inherit Jacques d'Azur's Weekend in Cannes with Stella Artois
Yesterday morning the official selection for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival was announced and with only 26 days until the fest kicks off, it's time to start early preparation. First, I am officially announcing that I will be attending Cannes again this year, for my second year, and I already can't wait to go. Additionally, both SlashFilm and I have been sponsored by Stella Artois for the festival and will be spending plenty of time in their lounge on the Croisette. But until then, I should tell you about the contest Stella is running where you could win an entire trip to this year's Cannes by inheriting the "King of Cannes" Jacques d'Azur's weekend.

De Niro Reveals Scorsese's Two Film Plans for The Irishman
One of the many, many projects that Martin Scorsese has in the works is an adaptation of a mob book called I Heard You Paint Houses that Scorsese would direct as a feature film titled The Irishman. In late 2008, it was announced that Scorsese would be reuniting with Robert De Niro for this project, making this the first time they'd work together since Casino in 1995. The last we wrote about the project was in '08 and it was mentioned again in a post looking at Scorsese's line-up following The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Now MTV has an update from De Niro himself about a brilliant idea for making this as two films. Read on!

Curtis Hanson & Searchlight Making Feature About Phony Cop
Unless you're from Gerald, Missouri, you probably don't know who Bill Anthony Jakob is, but you'll find out soon. Deadline reports that Fox Searchlight has signed on to produce a film about Jakob to be written by actor Clark Gregg (who wrote and directed Choke) and directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile, Lucky You) seen above. The original intent was to turn the story into a comedy, but since it wasn't funny for those involved (more on that below), they decided otherwise. Deadline doesn't say when this will go into production, but I hope it's sooner than later, since this is just such a wacky story. So who is this guy?

Leading Ladies: Dunst in Melancholia, Farmiga in a Western
Two casting stories for two great actresses. First up, Deadline reports that Kirsten Dunst has landed the lead role in Lars von Trier's new film Melancholia. Dunst got the role when Penelope Cruz (first rumored in February) backed out to do Pirates of the Caribbean 4 instead. This is described as a "sci-fi disaster film" about a planet named Melancholia that "looms threateningly close to Earth." It will shoot July to September in Sweden. Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander & Stellan Skarsgaard and Udo Kier are all in the cast. I'm quite excited to see a sci-fi film from the very controversial von Trier. More casting below!

Worth Watching: Official US Trailer for Neil Jordan's Ondine
Once upon a time. Mangolia has debuted the official US trailer on Apple for Neil Jordan's Ondine starring Colin Farrell as an Irish fisherman and the gorgeous Alicja Bachleda (who is currently dating Farrell). While this wasn't my favorite film of the Toronto Film Festival last year, it's one of a few that has stuck with me ever since I first saw it. It has such a heartwarming feel with some beautiful cinematography, impressive acting, and just a wonderful story, that it's easy to fall in love with this film. It's already played in Europe, but Magnolia will finally be bringing this to theaters in June, so be sure to go see it if it's playing near you!

Terribly Unfunny Full Trailer for Adam Sandler's Grown Ups
Its been five months since Sony debuted the teaser trailer for Grown Ups, starring Sandler, Schneider, Rock, James, Spade, Hayek, and Buscemi, but the official theatrical trailer is finally here (via MySpace). Unfortunately, my interest in this just went from slight to none. There's nothing funny about this, nothing exciting about it, no potential at all. It gets really bad when the entire group of kids and adults just stand around going "ohhh!" every time Kevin James gets hurt. Who laughs at this kind of stuff? Now I know one movie that I will staying far away from this summer. If you still want to watch this trailer, then read on.

Samuel Jackson & Kellan Lutz Cast in Indie Flick 'Deathsport'
This already sounds a bit iffy from that title. Heat Vision reports that Samuel Jackson and Kellan Lutz are in negotiations to join the "indie action" movie Deathsport directed by former visual effects supervisor and first-time director Jonah Loop. The story centers on a young man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and forced into the savage world of a modern gladiator arena, where men fight to the death for the entertainment of the online masses. Jackson orchestrates the games, overseeing them from his computer lair with the help of twin ladies who see to his every desire. So is this a remake of the 1978 Deathsport or just "inspired" by it?
