Taylor Kitsch Hitting the High Seas in Peter Berg's Battleship
After being the highlight of X-Men Origins: Wolverine (though his Cajun dialect could've used some work) and leading the upcoming John Carter of Mars, the young actor Taylor Kitsch is continuing his rising star status at Heat Vision reports the actor will star in Peter Berg's board game adaptation Battleship. Kitcsch is taking the role that Jeremy Renner was initially circling until scheduling conflicts forced him to choose between this or Paul Thomas Anderon's forthcoming project. There aren't any specifics on his role yet, but Kitsch will certainly be right in the center of the story's naval battle against a water-bound armada of aliens.

Universal Unnecessarily Putting Johnny English Back in Action
Universal may not have the backbone to risk putting up the money for a potentially heavy-hitting drama like Cartel with Josh Brolin, but damn it if they won't pony up the dough for an unnecessary comedy sequel as Variety reports the studio is looking to make Johnny English 2. The sequel to the 2003 "comedy" brings back Rowan Atkinson (Bean) as the titular clumsy, bumbling British spy with Oliver Parker (St. Trinian's) set to direct from Mr. Bean's Holiday writer, Hamish McColl's, new screenplay. Yep, you're right Universal, this sounds so much better than an engaging drug trafficking drama. Ugh, why wasn't this done years ago!?

Must Watch: Carl Erik Rinsch's Amazing Sci-Fi Short The Gift
You may not known who Carl Erik Rinsch is yet, but you will soon. Rinsch is a filmmaker, currently part of Ridley Scott's RSA team, that has been working on commercials and shorts for a few years and is finally on the verge of breaking out. He's been hired by Universal to direct 47 Ronin as well as the Creature from the Black Lagoon remake. Philips, the electronics manufacturer, has commissioned five directors (Rinsch one of them) to create short films for another cinema series, where we got that amazing robbery short from last year. Rinsch's sci-fi short, titled The Gift, has just debuted online (via SlashFilm) and is a must watch.

First Look: Ralph Fiennes' New Shakespeare Film Coriolanus
Whoa! Last year it was announced that actor Ralph Fiennes would be making his debut as a director on a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Coriolanus. At the time, we didn't actually know how contemporary it would be, but thanks to these first photos from the set in Serbia, it looks like Fiennes has actually set his film around the Iraq war. Action blog 30 Ninjas has the scoop on the photos, which come from the first week's battle scenes in the Serbian city of Pancevo. Fiennes is also starring in this as the lead along with Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain & Vanessa Redgrave.

Director Vincenzo Natali Considering Swamp Thing & High Rise
By now I hope everyone has seen the first teaser trailer for Vincenzo Natali's Splice or at least seen some of his earlier films like Cube and Cypher. Vincenzo Natali is a director on the verge of breaking out (despite Cube hit in 1997) and that's thanks to Splice being bought by Joel Silver's Dark Castle Ent and getting a wide release from Warner Bros. But what's next for this director? We wrote about an adaptation of a children's novel called Tunnels a few months back, but MTV talked with Natali and learned he's got his sights set on the Swamp Thing movie in the works with Joel Silver and/or an adaptation of J.G. Ballard's High Rise.

Ruben Fleischer Officially Directing '30 Minutes or Less' Next
After the success of Zombieland, director Ruben Fleischer had more than a couple choices to follow up his horror comedy other than the forthcoming sequel. Speculation involved a couple of different comedies and supposedly even an offer to direct Mission Impossible 4, but instead of going the action franchise route, Fleischer is keeping his next project in the comedic wheelhouse as Production Weekly confirms via Twitter that he will begin production on one of the previously mentioned projects, 30 Minutes or Less, an action comedy about a pizza delivery guy on an unlikely caper. Danny McBride has joined, but not as the lead.

Tony Scott on Potzdamer Platz w/ Bardem, Rourke & Statham?
That's right folks, director Tony Scott might actually be directing a movie without Denzel Washington as Deadline reports a drama with the messy title Potzdamer Platz might be his next project after finishing Unstoppable, the action flick starring Chris Pine, and, yes, Denzel Washington. Apparently the filmmaker already has the interest of Javier Bardem, Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham for a story about two soldiers in a New Jersey-based crime family who try to expand internationally, however it's unclear if they're all interested in the same part, or three different roles. Apparently this has been in development since 2000.

Bill Condon to Direct Both Parts of Twilight: Breaking Dawn?
Just last month, some genuine interest from the previously uninterested may have been created for The Twilight Saga's presumed two-part finale Breaking Dawn as high profile directors like Sofia Coppola, Gus Van Sant and Bill Condon being offered the chance to helm the vampire melodrama. Now it looks like Summit and series author Stephanie Meyer (who has to approve the choice of director) have their top choice as Deadline reports Condon (Dreamgirls) is the leading candidate to direct the finale and may be negotiating a deal which will have him filming both parts back-to-back. If only they could be musicals.

Universal Puts the Kibosh on Josh Brolin Drug Drama 'Cartel'
After dramas like Repo Men and Green Zone, which were aimed at adult audiences, failed to make a decent return at the box office, it looks like Universal isn't willing to risk more money on such projects as Deadline reports the studio has killed Cartel, which was going into production in just five weeks. Josh Brolin was set to star (he replaced Sean Penn) in the drama about a man hellbent on protecting his son after his wife is brutally murdered after mixing in the world of Mexican drug cartels, but apparently concerns about budget, script, and complexities of shooting a drug-related drama on location in Mexico were just too overwhelming.

Leading Ladies: Michelle Williams & Alicia Keys Circling Roles
In this bit of casting news, one actress has been turning in stellar work, and another who is still looking to prove her talent, are looking to land lead roles in two different projects. First, The Wrap reports Michelle Williams (Shutter Island) is looking to land one of three lead roles in The Emperor's Children which recently hired Noah Baumbach to sit in the director's chair instead of a once attached Ron Howard. Keira Knightley and Eric Bana are already cast in the adaptation of Claire Messud's 2006 novel, and Williams would likely be playing the character of Danielle Minkoff, a TV documentary producer from the Midwest.

New Planet of the Apes Prequel 'Ceaser' is Shooting This July?
It looks like it finally may be happening. Production Weekly is reporting via their Twitter that 20th Century Fox has opened up production offices at Mammoth Studios in Burnaby, BC (outside of Vancouver) for their new Planet of the Apes prequel titled Caesar: Rise of the Apes. They also report that shooting starts in mid-July. We've reported bits and pieces about this new Apes project previously, but we didn't know if it'd ever make it into production. But if you believe it, it's almost ready to go. I have a feeling this is all accurate since it probably came from an industry tracking board, so get ready to see a new Planets of the Apes movie!
