Jemaine Clement Confirmed as the Villain for Men in Black 3
Though we had gotten confirmation that Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith would be returning for Men in Black 3 along with Josh Brolin being tossed into the mix, there was still no official word on whether or not rumors of Sacha Baron Cohen or Jemaine Clement joining the cast had any validity at all. Now it's official as Sony has announced that Clement has been cast as Yaz, a presumably alien villain who will give the Men in Black a run for their planet. No word on the specifics of his evil plans yet, but no matter what, this is great news for the franchise which truly needs some new life injected into it after the horrendous Men in Black 2.

Casting Tidbits: Alfred Molina, Ellen Page, John Hurt & More
An elevator can only go up and down, but the Casting Tidbits can go sideways, and slantways, and longways, and backways, and squareways, and front ways, and any other ways that you can think of. First up, Deadline reports Alfred Molina had joined the cast of Abduction, the John Singleton directed action thriller which stars Taylor Lautner as a young man who realizes he was kidnapped as a child, and is forced to run for his life after he reaches out to find his real parents. Molina will play a dogged CIA agent who is one step behind, determined to bring him in alive. His job would've been easier if he had the Doc Ock arms from Spider-Man.

Another Awesome Official Poster for Vincenzo Natali's Splice
I'm really hoping that Vincenzo Natali's creature feature Splice becomes a sleeper hit this summer, but it may be a bit too crazy for some. That said, I'm excited as hell for this movie to hit theaters (in just over a few weeks!) and Warner Bros has been doing a great job marketing it (check out the trailer). A few weeks back we featured the first teaser poster and now IMPAwards has landed what looks to be the final official poster for Splice and it's pretty awesome. There's also a freaky French poster floating around that I didn't feature, but I really dig this new one. It's atmospheric and creepy and will totally help sell this. Check it out below!

Cannes Review: Gregg Araki's Trippy College Comedy Kaboom
Although I already walked out of one film earlier at the Cannes Film Festival asking "what the fuck did I just watch?", this movie deserves that exclamation much more than that other one (Hideo Nakata's Chatroom). After hearing some interesting buzz about American indie filmmaker Gregg Araki's new film Kaboom, I decided to check out the film at its last screening in Cannes and man, was it crazy. It's pretty much an acid trip version of Rules of Attraction about some college kids and, well, I can't even really start to explain what happens. If you're in to low budget mind-trip wacky films, then maybe you'll end up liking Kaboom as well.

Wayne McClammy Might Direct 'Desperados' with Isla Fisher
You may not know Wanye McClammy by name, but you likely know his work directing Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel's respective viral videos "I'm Fucking Matt Damon" and "I'm Fucking Ben Affleck." Now THR reports he is looking to make his feature film debut with Desperados, a comedy being developed as a potential starring vehicle for Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers, Hot Rod). The story follows a girl who sends an indignant email to her new boyfriend, who's gone silent after they had sex, only to discover he's comatose in a Mexican hospital. So she races for the border with her friends to intercept the email before he recovers.

This Week on Netflix Instant: District 9, Amelie, The Jerk, More
So last week with the Cannes Film Festival shifting into full gear and the time zone difference with our own Alex Billington bringing us the latest from the fest, we didn't have time to publish the newest weekly Netflix Instant update. But now we're back with a vengeance (and last week's list sucked anyway). This week we've got a solid collection of flicks including a film from my Top 10 of 2009, an animated flick that was snubbed for an Oscar nomination, one of my favorite comedies of all-time, an 80's horror favorite that has a remake lined up and a throwback to when Tom Hanks used to actually be funny. So what's in our queue this week?

First Look: New Apocalyptic Thriller 'Vanishing on 7th Street'
I forgot this was even being made! Our friends at Quiet Earth somehow got their hands on a few low quality photos from the upcoming apocalyptic thriller Vanishing on 7th Street directed by Brad Anderson, of The Machinist and Transsiberian previously. Now that I'm reminded that it exists, I do actually remember writing about the casting news last year because it sounded like an awesome concept. Set in a once-thriving city where shadowy forms have caused residents to simply vanish, leaving only their clothes and possessions behind, a small handful of survivors band together in a dimly-lit tavern on 7th Street, struggling to survive.

Drew Barrymore Directing New Oz Sequel Surrender Dorothy?
Kind of like The Beatles craze going on with movies right now, Wizard of Oz inspired projects are a dime a dozen. We've got that Robert Downey Jr. Oz The Great And Powerful project and Josh Olson's Wizard of Oz follow-up, amongst others. Throw another project on the pile as Pajiba reports that Drew Barrymore, who made her directorial debut last year with Whip It, is attached to star in and direct another new Wizard of Oz sequel titled Surrender Dorothy. The project was apparently first announced in 2002 and is based on a script written by Zach Helm (of Strange Than Fiction). Beyond that we're not sure how soon this is coming.

Cannes Review: Alejandro González Iñárritu's Latest 'Biutiful'
It took six days, but I finally may have found my favorite film of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. I've already seen a few good films, a few okay films, and a few terrible films in Cannes, but Alejandro González Iñárritu's Biutiful is the first incredible film I've seen. Javier Bardem stars as Uxbal, a troubled father living with two children in present day Barcelona, and he gives one of the festival's single greatest performances. If he doesn't end up getting an award in Cannes for his performance or at the Oscars next year, I'll be surprised. Biutiful is powerful, depressing, and emotional, but also an incredibly "beautiful" film (to use that cliche).

Cannes Review: Beat Takeshi's Japanese Mobster Film Outrage
A few days ago I watched my first Takeshi Kitano film. I'm not sure why I haven't seen any of his previous films (he's directed quite a few), but I was excited to check out his newest Cannes entry Outrage, a modern Japanese mobster film that's literally just two hours of yakuza yelling at each other and killing each other in brutal ways. But I'm now a Takeshi Kitano, or Beat Takeshi (as they call him in Japan), fan because I dug the hell out of this film. It's one of those totally badass Japanese mobster flicks that anyone can kick back and watch with friends and totally enjoy just because it's so damn crazy. There's not much to it, but it's great.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Will Officially Be Shot in Digital 3D
This isn't that surprising, only because we've known (and assumed) for years that Disney would go 3D on the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie. But Deadline says that Disney Chairman Rich Ross has approved the decision to shoot Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 3D this year. However, their article is so damn vacuous, I'm not actually sure they're shooting in 3D, because they only state that it will be shot "in Disney Digital 3D." That term, Disney Digital 3D, is used to describe their post-production conversion process, not to shoot in 3D, so I'm not really sure, but it'll at least be 3D when it hits theaters.

Vampire Secret Agent Novel 'Blood Oath' Headed to Big Screen
Even though the market has been crowded with vampire stories trying to ride the coattails of The Twilight Saga all the way to the bank, there's a new vampire project moving forward that I can actually get behind as Heat Vision reports producer Lucas Foster (Jumper, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and his Warp Films production banner have picked up the rights to Christopher Farnsworth's novel Blood Oath which hits shelves today. The story follows a vampire captured by the U.S. Army after the Civil War who is forced to swear an oath to President Andrew Johnson and has since protected the presidency in the Secret Service for over 150 years.
