Cannes Update: A World of Discovery, Criticism & Great Cinema
I haven't been able to sit down and write an actual blog about the Cannes Film Festival since I arrived last week. It's now the evening of Day 5 and I'm absolutely amazed that five days have already whizzed by so quickly. This festival is grueling and exhausting, both physically and mentally, because there's so much going on non-stop, the time difference is killer, and it's just a challenge to keep up with the site and all the films. But that said, I'm having a great time, and although I haven't enjoyed every film I've seen so far (more on that below), I still love coming here to discover and enjoy films from all over the world every single day.

Super 8 Viral Update: Are Rocket Poppeteers the New Slusho?
"You can't drink just six!" Everyone remembers Slusho from the Cloverfield days (right?). Well, it looks like we now have our new Slusho for J.J. Abrams' Super 8 movie - Rocket Poppeteers. Sometime last week after the first trailer for Super 8 hit in front of Iron Man 2, an interesting new viral site was discovered at scariestthingieversaw.com. The site would connect to a server that eventually displayed a countdown timer that would connect with some files. After the timer ran out a few days ago, our friends at MovieViral.com discovered a newspaper article with an ad for Rocket Poppeteers popsicles and a new website for them, too.

Hollywood Gang Developing Historical Epic Trilogy on Caesar
Hollywood Gang Productions, run by Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton, hasn't actually developed a feature film since Frank Miller's 300 in 2007. They've been pitching projects left and right, but nothing has moved into production yet. They're now developing is a historical drama based on the early life of Julius Caesar. They're packaging it as a new trilogy bed on Conn Iggulden's Emperor series of novels (The Gates of Rome, The Death of Kings, The Field of Swords) with William Broyles Jr. (Apollo 13, Cast Away, Jarhead, Flags of Our Fathers) writing the script. Is it just me or does this a little similar to HBO's feature version of Rome?

John Landis Developing Biopic About 'Mad' Founder Bill Gaines
Filmmaker John Landis must be mounting quite a directorial comeback, as he not only has the upcoming comedy Burke & Hare in the works, but Deadline says he also has another biopic about EC Comics publisher and co-creator Bill Gaines, who was also one of the founders of Mad magazine. Landis is currently lining up financing for the film following Burke & Hare (but no assurances that this will be his very next project). Apparently the script for this is titled Ghoulishly Yours, William M. Gaines and was written by Joel Eisenberg, of only Out of the Black and Hollywood Vampyr previously. Sounds like it could be interesting.

Cannes Review: Quentin Dupieux's Wacky Tire Movie Rubber
One of the most buzzed about films in this year's Semaine de la Critique (Critic's Week) is French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux's wacky new film Rubber about an angry sentient tire that explodes peoples' heads using psycho-kinetic powers. The film is self-defined (directly in the beginning) as an homage to "no reason" in film - as in, the idea that things happen "for no reason" in many films. And, for no reason, Dupieux decided to make a film about a tire that's alive. Alas, there's only so much anyone can do with this concept, and it doesn't have enough to last a full film, so he uses some other tricks to keep it running for a full 85 minutes.

Cannes Review: Xavier Dolan's Superb Les Amours Imaginaires
Another film I was looking forward to seeing here in Cannes (after the trailer) was young Quebec filmmaker Xavier Dolan's newest lavish love story, Les Amours Imaginaires, or simply just Heartbeats in English. I'm not even sure how to explain the style of the film, since I could categorize it as hyper-stylized, but it was one of the most beautifully shot films at Cannes this year and one film that I will definitely not be forgetting anytime soon. Its a uniquely modern bit of cinema that I'm absolutely in love with and I can't even begin to think about it without listening to Dalida's "Bang, Bang" which is used almost as a theme song in the film.

Cannes Review: Oliver Stone's Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
One of the big premieres in Cannes that I was really looking forward to this year was for Oliver Stone's Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, his sequel to the classic 1987 stock market film Wall Street. Considering its now 23 years later and we're in a new economic recession, the film feels very much like a fresh, modern take on the Wall Street idea but wrapped around the economic troubles of today, which will instantly anger and distance some critics who don't like looking into that world. But that doesn't mean it's not an enjoyable film with fantastic performances all around and a stellar script from one of the best screenwriters working today.

David Fincher is Taking Over Disney's 20,000 Leagues Movie
Wow, I did not see this coming! THR is reporting that Disney is in negotations with David Fincher to direct their 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie that McG was attached to for a while before his iteration of the project was canceled late last year. Additionally, they say that screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum, The Informant, Contagion) has been hired to write a fresh new take on the classic Jules Verne story about a vengeful scientific genius and his warlike submarine. Apparently Fincher has been developing this idea with Disney production head Sean Bailey after he was hired last year. Is this great news or what?

Bruce Willis Also Joins the Cast of Rian Johnson's Sci-Fi 'Looper'
A couple of weeks ago, we learned that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was tentatively set to star in Rian Johnson's upcoming sci-fi film Looper, about hitmen who are sent their victims from the future (since time travel has been invented). We also revealed a full plot synopsis a few days later that mentions that Gordon-Levitt, who plays one of these hitmen, encounters himself when the victim he's sent back to kill is an older version of himself. Instead of having Gordon-Levitt play an older version of himself in make-up, Deadline reports that Bruce Willis has joined the cast to play the older character. This is shaping up to be an awesome project.

Wachowskis Are Developing a 'Hard-R' Gay Iraq War Movie?!
Yep, you read that crazy headline right. You may have heard of this already, but if not, here are the latest details. Deadline is reporting from Cannes that the Wachowskis (Matrix, Speed Racer) are circulating a new script that is a "drama that focuses on a 'hard R' homosexual relationship between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi." It's set somewhat in the future and the script is apparently cinema verite-style that "spans back over years that include the current war in Iraq." Apparently they want to direct this next and are currently looking for financiers, but that's apparently all we know about this. I honestly don't know how to respond.

Philip Seymour Hoffman & Robin Wright May Join Moneyball
We've been keeping our eye on all the craziness and talent jockeying surrounding the adaptation of Michael Lewis' non-ficition book Moneyball. After tossing out Steven Soderbergh for Bennett Miller and replacing Demetri Martin with Jonah Hill, the film has been lucky enough to hold on to Brad Pitt and has collected a few more names as Variety reports Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright might step up to the plate. This will be a welcome reunion for Hoffman and Miller who last collaborated with spectacular results on Capote. This is shaping up to be quite the foray into the world of baseball with lots of interesting talent.

Liam Gallagher Producing a Film About Beatles' Apple Corps.
Last week we got news of a wholly peculiar and crazy zombie fueled project based around legendary British band The Beatles. Now we have word via a press release that a more grounded project using The Beatles is currently in the works. Liam Gallagher, frontman for the British alternative band Oasis, is producing and developing an adaptation of Richard DiLello's book The Longest Cocktail Party, a chronicle of his time as a student at Apple Corps, The Beatles' multimedia corporation, with Apple Press Officer Derek Taylor. However, for all those Beatles maniacs looking for a biopic on the Fab Four, this is not the project for you.
