Legendary Pictures Secures the Rights for a Mass Effect Movie

Mass Effect

Back in late 2008 we first reported that a feature adaptation of the very popular action sci-fi video game Mass Effect was in the works. At the time, it was being developed by former Marvel CEO Avi Arad, who had the options on the rights. However, Deadline is now reporting that Legendary Pictures (of The Dark Knight, Clash of the Titans, Watchmen, Jonah Hex) has announced a deal for the movie rights, meaning it'll be developed by them and distributed by Warner Bros (hell yes!). I Am Legend and Thor screenwriter Mark Protosevich is currently in talks to write the Mass Effect screenplay for Legendary. Now this is great news!

Dominic Cooper to Also Play Howard Stark in Captain America

Dominic Cooper / Howard Stark

Though we've already seen the role of Howard Stark (father to Iron Man himself, Tony Stark) portrayed by Gerard Sanders (in Iron Man) and most recently by John Slattery (in Iron Man 2), Salon (via Cinematical) reports that Dominic Cooper (An Education, The Duchess) will portray an even younger version of the founder of Stark Industries in Captain America: The First Avenger. This is confirmation of what we had heard previously about just how big of a role Papa Stark will play in Marvel's ever-expanding on-screen universe. Though we're unsure how big the part is, there's no doubt it'll certainly be a very integral role.

Seven Awesome Character Posters for Chris Nolan's Inception

Christopher Nolan's Inception

With every new update, this just keeps getting better! A series of seven awesome character posters for Chris Nolan's Inception debuted on Moviefone and they're totally frickin' gorgeous. The best thing about them is that they actually give us a tiny bit of extra insight into each of the characters without revealing too much to spoil anything (as far as I know). Below you'll find posters for: The Extractor, The Architect, The Forger, The Point Man, The Shade, The Tourist and The Mark. This definitely sounds like a brilliant heist movie, but as we already know, Nolan's got some tricks up his sleeves on this one, so expect to be amazed. Check 'em out!

Watch This: First Trailer for Lionsgate's 3D Alpha and Omega

Alpha and Omega Trailer

Lionsgate hasn't had much luck with animated movies (e.g. Happily N'Ever After) but they're still trying to find a formula that works and a story that audiences enjoy. Due out in theaters this fall is another new 3D animated movie from Lionsgate called Alpha and Omega about two mismatched wolves who, obviously, end up together due to some crazy circumstance. The voice cast includes Justin Long, Hayden Panettiere, Dennis Hopper, Christina Ricci, Christine Lakin and Danny Glover. This looks like it'll be a lot of fun with charming story, but not anything up to the level of Pixar. Anyway, give it a chance & check this out. Enjoy!

Jackie Brown Prequel 'The Switch' Taking Off Sans Tarantino

Jackie Brown

There's a good chance that if you're a Quentin Tarantino fan that you already know his 1997 film Jackie Brown was based on Elmore Leonard's crime novel Rum Punch. But did you know that characters Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson) and Louis Gara (Robert De Niro) originated from Lenoard's novel The Switch, published 14 years before Rum Punch? I sure as hell didn't. But now, thanks to an update from JoBlo, we can all be aware and privy to the news that The Switch will become a prequel adaptation to Jackie Brown, and although Tarantino has apparently given his blessing to the film, he won't be involved with the project.

Hitman 2 Finds a Director, But Olyphant's Return is Uncertain

Timothy Olyphant as Hitman

In the long line of failed video game movies, back in 2007 the underrated Timothy Olyphant attempted to turn the whole mess around with Hitman by taking on the role of Agent 47, a bald assassin raised from birth to be a killer, tattooed with a barcode on the back of his head. Though I haven't seen it, word of mouth and a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes doesn't inspire me to ever actually watch it, but the $100+ million worldwide gross (on a $30 million budget) has inspired 20th Century Fox to make Hitman 2 which Deadline says Spanish filmmaker Daniel Benmayor will direct, but it's uncertain if Olyphant will reprise the Hitman role yet.

New Interview: The Karate Kid Remake Director Harald Zwart

Harald Zwart

A month ago, I went to the Sony lot in Culver City, CA for an interview with director Harald Zwart, who was working on their sound stages to finish the score for the upcoming remake of The Karate Kid. Now, Zwart's previous credits are Agent Cody Banks and The Pink Panther 2, but I was asked to interview him after seeing The Karate Kid (which I honestly really enjoyed). I think Karate Kid is a huge step forward for Zwart, showing that he's more than just a director of cheesy comedies, and I wanted to talk about all that he had to go to through shooting this movie with Jaden and Will Smith and Jackie Chan on location in China.

One Final Festival Wrap-Up of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival

My trip to the 63rd Cannes Film Festival is coming to end the same way it began - I'm writing this as I blaze through the French countryside in a high speed train on my way back to Paris. The awards have been announced, I'm finally on my way home, and it's time to reflect on the films I saw one more time, especially because I wrote that I was struggling to find any good films some five days ago. In the end I'll have seen only 18 films in total, one of which was a market film, but I'm a bit disappointed by the festival this year. While there are some highlights (more on those films below), this was ultimately a very forgettable year in Cannes.

Check It Out: Another Boring New Teaser Poster for Scream 4?

Scream 4

New decade, new rules, are we sure? Even though a few weeks ago it was announced that a whole slough of new young actors would be slayed in the upcoming Scream 4, being directed (again) by Wes Craven, this new poster (via Shockya.com) only hows the same three heads for Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette that have been in the series from the start. The other new actors in the cast are Lake Bell, Hayden Panettiere, Ashley Greene and Rory Culkin, but they're obviously not big selling points (yet). I'm not even sure if this poster is real, but I like the smokey design of the ghostface in the background, so check it out!

Thai Film 'Uncle Boonmee' Wins the Cannes 2010 Palme d'Or

Uncle Boonmee - Palme d'Or Winner

Yep, that funky "Ghost Monkey" with red eyes seen above was the winner of the Palme d'Or this year. Well, sort of at least, as the very trippy Thai film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives won the coveted Golden Palm at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. The awards were announced tonight and we have the full list below. The jury this year was led by Tim Burton and included Kate Beckinsale, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Alberto Barbera, Emmanuel Carrere, Benicio Del Toro, Victor Erice, Alexandre Desplat & Shekhar Kapur. I really wanted Iñárritu's Biutiful to win, but instead the one film that I walked out of is the one that won.

Orlando Bloom & James Corden Cast in The Three Musketeers

Orlando Bloom

Two more actors have joined the growing cast of Paul W.S. Anderson's 3D The Three Musketeers today. Variety reports that Orlando Bloom, who last starred in Sympathy for Delicious, and James Corden, a British actor probably known best for The History Boys. Bloom will play the "Duke of Buckingham," while British comedian Corden will portray the servant Planchet. The cast includes Christoph Waltz as Cardinal Richelieu; Logan Lerman as D'Artagnan; Matthew MacFadyen, Ray Stevenson and Luke Evans as Athos, Porthos and Aramis, respectively; Milla Jovovich as M'lady De Winter; and Mads Mikkelsen as Rochefort.

A Look Back at Cannes 2010 in Photos - My Home for 12 Days

Cannes Film Festival

Yes, that is actually Batman, and it's just one of the many memorable images from this year's Cannes Film Festival. As the festival winds down and comes to an end, and as I prepare for my long journey home after arriving in Cannes 12 days ago, I thought I'd put together a quick look back at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival in photos. You've been able to read my reviews of the films, but the experience of attending a festival in this small town in the south of France is something that's very hard to describe in text, so I thought I'd give you a taste of the imagery and the sights (and sounds) of Cannes. So without any further ado, let's get right into it!
