Indie Trailer Sunday: 'Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work' Doc Trailer

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work Trailer

Now that the Cannes Film Festival is over, and because we've featured a lot of foreign films in this column recently, I thought I'd pick something uniquely American to feature as today's trailer. A few weeks back, IFC Films debuted the official trailer for the upcoming documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, which is indeed about the (typically annoying) comedienne Joan Rivers. This is an indie film that actually premiered at Sundance and received rave reviews, such as this one from Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly. I'm not really a big fan of Rivers, but this is a fun and fascinating trailer, so check it out if you haven't yet!

Cannes Review: Gustavo Hernández's Film 'The Silent House'

Gustavo Hernández's The Silent House

One film at Cannes that was particularly unique was Gustavo Hernández's The Silent House, or La Casa Muda, a Uruguayan horror film shot entirely in one-take. This 79-minute haunted house film was shot on a professional Canon DSLR camera in one full non-stop, non-cutting take. While the film's story didn't really stand out, it was a technical and visual achievement like no other, and incredible to watch simply because it was amazing that Hernández and his cast could pull of something like this. If you're a fan of horror or want to just want to be mesmerized by a great technical achievement like this, The Silent House is a must see.

Cannes Review: Rachid Bouchareb's Powerful 'Outside the Law'

Rachid Bouchareb's Outside the Law

Unless you're from France or Algeria, you probably don't know much about the backstory behind this. But at Cannes this year, Rachid Bouchareb's Outside the Law, or Hors la Loi in French, was potentially the most controversial films that played here. There were even French Gendarmerie troops in full riot gear protecting the Palais on the day it premiered because of potential riots. The reason for the controversy comes a bit from supposed inaccuracies in the film and simply from the subject matter it deals with. The story is about three Algerian brothers who, following the Sétif massacre in 1945 after WWII, become freedom fighters in France.

Anchor Bay Picks Up Kaare Andrews' Monster Movie Altitude

Altitude

It was announced yesterday that Anchor Bay Entertainment has picked up US distribution rights to Kaare Andrews' Altitude, the mid-air monster movie that we've featured the trailer for previously. No release date has been set yet, but I'm hoping this means we'll see it by the end of the year, since we've been waiting at least for this already and it looks awesome. Written by Paul A. Birkett, Altitude follows a group of teens on a weekend getaway aboard a small plane that suddenly turns deadly when they encounter a supernatural force. It seems heavily inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, but other than that we don't know really they encounter.

Must Watch: Badass Early Teaser for Xavier Gens' The Divide

The Divide Teaser Trailer

Content Film has launched an early teaser trailer, that will only show for 24 hours, on the official website for French director Xavier Gens' new film The Divide. The cast was just announced a few weeks ago and it only started shooting last week, but they had enough finished footage to whip up this badass preview. The Divide stars Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Lauren German, Rosanna Arquette and Michael Eklund. The sci-fi thriller is about eight strangers who take refuge in a makeshift fallout shelter in the basement of their apartment after a cataclysmic explosion devastates New York City. You'll definitely want to check this out!

Sound Off: DreamWorks' Shrek Forever After - Your Thoughts?

Shrek Forever After

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? It all began back in 2001, and now it comes to an end in 2010 (or so they've claim). DreamWorks Animation's fourth and final movie in the insanely popular Shrek franchise, Shrek Forever After, hits theaters this weekend as the first big animated family movie of the summer. How does it compare to the other Shrek movies? Is it as good as the first one or is it as bad as the third? Is it entertaining to watch and was the 3D up to par? How was the twisted Rumpelstiltskin storyline? If you've seen it already, leave a comment below and let us know what you thought of Shrek Forever After!

Actor Andy Serkis Directing His First Feature Film Next Year

Andy Serkis

One the final bits of news from Cannes that I wanted to pick up on this tidbit from Deadline. They've heard, apparently from Andy Serkis himself, that the British actor plans to make his feature directing debut next year with a psychological thriller. Serkis wouldn't reveal the name or any other details about the project, but would confirm that he recently started up a new production company called Caveman Films with Bridget Jones and Elizabeth: The Golden Age producer Jonathan Cavendish. Serkis can next be seen as rocker Ian Dury in the film Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. He also stars in Burke & Hare and The Adventures of Tintin.

Brand New 60-Second UK TV Spot for Chris Nolan's Inception

Inception TV Spot

We're nearing the point where we won't be featuring any new footage from Christopher Nolan's Inception because I want to make sure that everyone has an incredible experience and the only way to make sure that's possible is to minimized the amount of the movie you see before going in. So this brand new UK TV spot for Inception may be the last I feature from this movie, so check it out while you can, and forget everything you saw in it as soon as you see it. I totally love the little eye-brow moment from Ellen Page, but that's probably a lot more subtle in the movie than it is in the trailer. Anyway, I've said enough about this, so just enjoy it!

Watch This: Joe Pesci in Taylor Hackford's Love Ranch Trailer

Love Ranch Trailer

There's no business like ho-business! E1 Entertainment has unleashed the official trailer Taylor Hackford's Love Ranch, starring Joe Pesci and Helen Mirren, about the couple who opened the first legal brothel in Nevada called Mustang Ranch. In addition to the supposedly retired but incredible Joe Pesci, the cast also includes Bryan Cranston, Scout Taylor-Compton, Gina Gershon, Bai Ling, and many more. This looks good, and the trailer plays like it's some crazy epic, but I think it's a sign that this hasn't shown at any film fests before its release. I might check it out, but I'll probably wait to read some reviews first. Trailer is below!

Patrick Tatopoulos Directing Eco-Horror Project 'The Colony'

Patrick Tatopoulos

After years of working in art and make-up departments and designing various creature effects for films like Godzilla (1998) and I Am Legend, Patrick Tatopoulos moved onward and upward by directing his first feature film - Screen Gems' Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Though Tatopoulos has been developing an adaptation of Kevin Grevioux's Darkstorm comic I, Frankenstein (which is supposed to shoot this summer), Heat Vision reports he is also negotiating to direct The Colony, the story of a group of survivors forced underground by the next ice age who must fight to preserve humanity against a savage threat (or bugs!).

Casting Tidbits: Rory Culkin, Hayden Panettiere, Gerard Butler

Rory Culkin, Hayden Panettiere, Gerard Butler

Invention, my dear friends, is 93% Casting Tidbits, 6% Electricity, 4% Evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple. First up, after nabbing a role in the Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes, Deadline reports James Franco is also attached to Ricky Stinicky, a comedy which follows couple of pals who invent a fake friend to employ when they want to get away from their spouses or get out of trouble. However, when the friends' wives insist on finally meeting Ricky Stinicky at a party they're throwing, the guys are forced to hire an actor (Franco) to actually play the made-up counterpart. Surely plenty of hilarious hijinks will ensue.

Details on Joss Whedon & Morgan Spurlock's Comic-Con Doc

Joss Whedon & Morgan Spurlock - Comic-Con

Back in February we learned that fanboy favorite filmmaker Joss Whedon and documentarian Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me, Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?) were teaming up for a documentary following a group of fans making their way to the annual geek-fest that is Comic-Con. Now Variety has the official word on what has been titled Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan's Hope which will see Whedon and Spurlock collaborating with comics legend Stan Lee and Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News. The doc will follow seven fans from across America, and the world, as they descend upon Comic-Con this year.
