Gary Oldman Joins the Cast of DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda 2

Gary Oldman

After hearing that screenwriter Charlie Kaufman was polishing off the script for DreamWorks Animation's sequel Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of DoomHeat Vision reports Gary Oldman (The Book of Eli, The Dark Knight) will join Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, David Cross and Dustin Hoffman for the action-packed follow-up. Though we heard the story follows Po and The Furious Five vanquishing a new weapon that threatens to destroy kung fu, Heat Vision says the story follows Po's search for other pandas and his run-in with a group of bandits. Maybe they're the ones with this weapon?

Cannes Review: Fabrice Gobert's Simon Werner Disappeared...

Simon Werner A Disparu...

The official English title for this film is Lights Out, but that's such a bland and unrepresentative title, I'm sticking with the official French title - Simon Werner A Disparu... (with the ellipses), which translates to Simon Werner Disappeared... This is yet another new festival favorite that I discovered rather late in the fest, but I'm ecstatic that I caught it, because it was a breath of fresh air in a line-up that I haven't otherwise been impressed by this year. Simon Werner is, essentially, a fun lightweight exercise in the world of skewed high school gossip by way of a murder mystery. It's not a complete home run, but it was pretty damn good.

Going the Distance Trailer with Justin Long & Drew Barrymore

Going the Distance Trailer

New Line has debuted the official trailer for Going the Distance, the long-distance relationship romantic comedy starring real-life couple Justin Long and Drew Barrymore, over on MSN tonight. This movie is a big debut for both the writer and director and was hailed as one of the most realistic scripts dealing with long-distance relationships. I had really high hopes for this at the start and even got to check out the script, but this trailer looks a lot worse than I was expecting. There's some really, really cheesy stuff in it and I feel like it got a little dumbed down, but I'll still give this a chance when it hits theaters in August. Check it out!

James Franco Cast in Rupert Wyatt's Rise of the Apes Prequel

James Franco

Big casting news to report today that should make a few Planet of the Apes fans happy. Variety (and other trades sites like Deadline and Heat Vision) are reporting that James Franco has been cast as the lead in 20th Century Fox's Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes being directed by British director Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist). Franco will play the role of a young, driven scientist who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes. Apparently Franco beat out a number of Hollywood's young elite actors for the coveted lead role. As far as we know, Franco is the first actor cast in this highly anticipated prequel.

Rumor: The Avengers Will Be Fighting Off Skrulls Come 2012?

The Avengers

There's a new unconfirmed rumor going around, from ComicBookMovie, revealing some potential villain(s) in the upcoming The Avengers movie. I don't want to dwell on it too much, because a) I don't really want to reveal any big spoilers for a movie that is at least two years out, and b) this is such a very early rumor, it's almost all speculation and anything could happen with the script by the time they start shooting (remember, Joss Whedon still isn't even officially attached as director). That said, the rumor states that The Avengers will battle the shape-shifting alien race known as the Skrulls, which appeared in The Ultimates comics.

Frank Marshall to Direct New Robert Ludlum Film Covert One

Frank Marshall

Although we know the Jason Bourne franchise, originally based on Robert Ludlum novels, is currently dead, that doesn't mean Hollywood isn't mining the Ludlum archives for more story ideas. Pajiba reports that big time producer Frank Marshall will be directing an adaptation of a series of books called the Covert One series, which weren't actually written by Ludlum himself, but were put together "by several other authors, in conjunction with Ludlum." They don't have many details yet or anything to report, but do say that it's setup at Universal with Captivate Entertainment (who has most of the Ludlum feature film rights) developing it.

Must Watch: First Trailer for Blue Sky Studio's New Film 'Rio'

Rio Trailer

Along with DreamWorks new trailer for Megamind, 20th Century Fox has debuted a trailer (on Moviefone) for their newest animated movie hitting theaters a year from now, next April. Rio is about a rare species of macaw from a zoo in Minnesota who embarks on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when he learns that there is a female macaw located there. I've always liked Blue Sky's movies, but I haven't enjoyed any of their Ice Age sequels, but this looks like a solid return to form. It also reminds me of Surf's Up a little bit and that may be because the same screenwriter wrote this script, too. Anyway, it's a fun early teaser, so check it out!

Emma Watson & Logan Lerman in 'Perks of Being a Wallflower'

Emma Watson & Logan Lerman

Finally poised to begin an acting career outside of the Harry Potter franchise, Variety reports that Emma Watson will star opposite Logan Lerman in Stephen Chbosky's popular coming-of-age drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower, an adaptation of Chbosky's own book of the same name, which he will be writing and directing himself. Chbosky's story, published back in 1999, follows a shy and unpopular teenager who describes his life by writing a series of letters to an anonymous person and explores the awkward times of adolescence, including drug use and sexuality. Sounds typical, but this book is apparently quite dangerous.

Walden Bringing 'Cosmic' Children's Adventure to Big Screen

Frank Cottrell Boyce's Cosmic

After bringing C.S. Lewis' fantasy adventure The Chronicles of Narnia to life, Walden Media is looking to venture into depths of outer space as THR reports that they will bring Frank Cottrell Boyce's children's book Cosmic to life on the big screen. Described as Apollo 13 meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the story follows a 12 year-old boy who is often mistaken for an adult with premature facial hair. Though this makes his life a bit of a struggle, he decides to use his deceiving appearance to enter a "Greatest Dad Ever" contest and somehow finds himself on a rocket ship that is off course and 200,000 miles above the Earth. Oh snap!

Looney Tunes 3-D Animated Shorts Are Returning to Theaters

Looney Tunes

Before they were entertaining me on TV every Saturday morning when I was younger, Warner Bros' classic Looney Tunes served as their first animated theatrical series playing before movies in theaters from 1930 to 1969. Since I'm technically all grown up now, I'm not all up to date on the current state of cartoons for kids these days, but I'm well aware that Looney Tunes is certainly not the staple it once was on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, and that's just sad. However, NY Times is reporting that kids will finally discover (or maybe re-discover) characters like Bugs Bunny all over again in 3-D shorts hitting theaters this summer.

Robert Rodriguez Finally Nabs Rights for Fire and Ice Remake

Fire and Ice

With a career that's gone from one end of the spectrum to the other from the violent, stylized adaptation of Sin City to the family friendly action flick Spy Kids, it looks like director Robert Rodriguez has landed a dream project of sorts. He recently talked to AICN where he revealed that he's finally acquired the rights to the 1983 animated film Fire and Ice, a film that he's been interested in for years. Even better, Rodriguez and his Troublemaker Studios now fully control the rights, so whether the film gets made or not is entirely up to Rodriguez, but I think it's a safe bet that he's foaming at the mouth to get started as soon as possible.

Watch This: Official Trailer for DreamWorks' New Megamind

Megamind Trailer

With DreamWorks' Shrek Forever After hitting theaters this weekend, the animation studio has decided to unleash the first full-length trailer for Megamind, their new superhero comedy hitting theaters later this year featuring the voice talents of Will Ferrell (as Megamind), Brad Pitt (as Metro Man), Tina Fey and Jonah Hill. We ran the teaser trailer back in March and it looked absolutely terrible then and it looks terrible now. Well, actually, I'll admit that it started out pretty good, but slowly got worse and worse, and by the end I was about as uninterested in this as I possibly could be. Sorry all you DreamWorks lovers, but this looks awful.
