Universal Drops $200 Million on Battleship and Almost Killed It

Battleship

As Universal executives nervously await the weekend's box office returns for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the studio is already in the midst of an even bigger, more expensive gamble with their adaptation of the classic board game Battleship. THR reports that the Peter Berg directed naval-action movie will cost the studio around $200 million (maybe more) and that's for a film without any major movie stars on board inspired by the potentially tired trend of turning toys into movies. All this money is being spent on a film that came close to being nixed back in June, and that doesn't exactly make me confident in the film's potential success.

Fox's Official Trailer for the 'Avatar' Special Edition Re-Release

Avatar Re-Release Trailer

You knew it was coming, so don't get angry (again). IGN has debuted a new "trailer" (basically a 30-second TV spot) for 20th Century Fox's re-release of the Special Edition of Avatar. As reported and confirmed by James Cameron, the release will contain an extra nine minutes of new never-before-seen footage and will be your chance to see this in glorious 3D once again. I realize the backlash for Avatar has begun, but there are people (like me) who are excited to see this in theaters again. I also just love how epic it is: "the biggest adventure of all-time!" Wouldn't that be Star Wars or LOTR instead? Whatever, I'm still seeing this again!

Michael Jai White Starts Work on the Sequel to 'Black Dynamite'

Black Dynamite

Freeze, turkeys! After knocking out a conspiracy that went all the way up to Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon in The White House, blaxploitation hero Black Dynamite is looking to kick some more (and get some more) ass. The Mirror (via Film School Rejects) spoke to actor/writer Michael Jai White who revealed that he's working on a sequel to the blaxploitation action parody Black Dynamite. White said, "I've had the idea for Black Dynamite 2 for quite a while now, and it's gonna start where Black Dynamite left off . There's lots of things we didn't get a chance to do in the first one." After pimp-slapping the First Lady, what else is there?

He also gets to fight a Boss Battle which was awesome. Check this out, it's a great way to get you in the mood to see Scott Pilgrim this weekend. Enjoy!

Review: Scott Pilgrim vs the World is Totally 8 Bits of Awesome

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

We always knew Edgar Wright was working at an advanced level. With the first two films in his "Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy" (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz), he proved that while we were all living in an 8-bit world, he was delivering entertainment at a 64-bit execution. Even "Spaced", a show that sadly not everyone has partaken in, showed how progressive his directing skills were. So it comes as no surprise that his latest film, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, takes the game of film making and reinvents it once again. After having the term "game changer" thrust about like it's growing on trees, it is refreshing to finally see

Terminator Returning in a New Animated Movie? - Updated!

Terminator

The last rumblings we heard about Terminator back in February had two very different takes on the future of the sci-fi franchise. While it was uncovered that Bill Wisher, an original franchise writer, had treatments for two more installments in the series, James Cameron himself stated that even he thought the franchise had "run its course." Well, it seems like neither of those revelations have impacted the decision from a small film company called Hanover House to develop Terminator 3000, a $70 million 3D animated feature looking to stay at a PG-13 level. However, no writer, director or actors are mentioned as part of new venture.

New 'Lovely, Still' Trailer with Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn

Lovely, Still Trailer

I'm a sucker for these kinds of charming, indie romantic dramas. I just can't help it. But it especially gets me when the cast is lead by two phenomenal classic (Oscar winning) actors such as Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn, who look like they deliver truly wonderful performances in this. Yahoo has debuted a trailer for an indie film called Lovely, Still that I'm sure you probably haven't heard about before. It stars Landau as an elderly chap discovering love for the first time with Burstyn. Adam Scott and Elizabeth Banks are in it, too. This just looks like one of those truly heartwarming films. It's not for everyone, but really I want to see this.

John Hillcoat Might Direct Shia LaBeouf in Drama 'Triple Nine'

Shia LaBeouf

It's only "might" because nothing is signed, of course. In fact, those two aren't even in talks yet, just showing early interest in the project and that's all. The Wrap reports they've heard that director John Hillcoat (The Proposition, The Road) is circling a project called Triple Nine (or maybe it's just 999) that Shia LaBeouf is also considering starring in. Late last year it was reported that Hillcoat was going to be directing LeBeouf in an adaptation called The Promised Land, but production fall apart in January on that. I'm sure Hillcoat and LeBeouf have been trying to find another project since and this could be it, if they play their cards right.

Watch: Official Trailer for James L. Brooks' How Do You Know

How Do You Know Trailer

He's back! After laying low for about six years (since Spanglish in 2004), director James L. Brooks is back once again with a new romantic comedy titled How Do You Know (formerly known as Everything You've Got). The first trailer has finally debuted on Yahoo. How Do You Know stars Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Jack Nicholson(!) and Owen Wilson. This is a very long trailer (almost three minutes), but that seems to be the popular trend nowadays with complicated comedies, as there's a lot of the story they want to show. That said, this looks fantastic, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it. Gotta love James L. Brooks!

Hartnett & McGuigan Reteam for Time Travel Film 'Tomorrow'

Josh Hartnett

Sigh. Director Paul McGuigan and actor Josh Hartnett have worked together twice - on Lucky Number Slevin in 2006 and Wicker Park in 2004 before that. McGuigan didn't cast him when he directed Push from last year, but word is the two may be teaming up again for another new project. Our friends at Quiet Earth are reporting that Hartnett will star in McGuigan's newest project titled Tomorrow. Written by newcomer Michael Gould, it's about a man stuck traveling through time and space who's trying to prevent the murder of his family. As is the case in any time travel movie, I'm sure he learns that there's not much he can change.

Official Trailer for Anthology Documentary of 'Freakonomics'

Freakonomics Trailer

Magnolia has debuted an official trailer on Apple for Freakonomics, the anthology documentary version of Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner's popular economics book. They recruited a team of some of the best documentary filmmakers - Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing (Jesus Camp), Eugene Jarecki (Why We Fight), Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) and Seth Gordon (The King of Kong) - to each delve into one of the different economically wild topics the book covers. I've heard some mixed things about the doc, but this trailer looks good. Check it out and let us know what you think?

Warner Bros Developing Hybrid Live-Action Bugs Bunny Movie

Bugs Bunny

While we wait for Warner Bros to get on track with the Justice League, the studio is pursuing a franchise of live-action/CGI hybrid movies based on animated characters. Leading the way for their new interest in these awful CGI hybrids is Yogi Bear (man did that trailer look terrible), but kids love 'em and they make lots of money anyway, so who cares what we think. Deadline says that WB has hired David Berenbaum (Elf, The Haunted Mansion, Zoom, The Spiderwick Chronicles) to start writing a live-action Bugs Bunny movie in hopes of reviving "one of the studio’s most iconic intellectual properties." Iconic, sure, but we do need this?
