Netflix / Epix

As long as there's good titles hitting every week, we do our best to provide you with a list of new arrivals on Netflix Instant. The past two weeks haven't been worth an update, but perhaps that's because the people with Netflix have been busy securing a plethora of new titles for the streaming service. THR reports Netflix and cable channel Epix have struck an exclusive, multi-year deal which will give Netflix Instant a collection of new releases and library titles beginning September 1st. Reese Witherspoon Starring in Nora Ephron's Peggy Lee Biopic

Reese Witherspoon

She's already impressed plenty of people in her Oscar winning performance as June Carter in Walk the Line including a surprisingly spectacular singing voice. Now Reese Witherspoon is putting her vocal chords to work again as Variety reports the actress will be starring in a currently untitled biopic about jazz/pop singer, songwriter, composer and actress Peggy Lee. Witherspoon secured the life rights with the approval of Lee's granddaughter Holly Foster-Wells, followed by the attachment of producer Marc Platt (Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Nine) and romantic comedy favorite Nora Ephron (of Julie & Julia) to write and direct the movie.

Interview: Animal Kingdom Writer & Director David Michôd

David Michôd

One of my favorite indie gems of 2010 is a phenomenal Australian film called Animal Kingdom (watch the trailer). Despite the very Disney-sounding name, the film is an intense crime drama about a family of criminals from Melbourne's underworld. I first saw it at the Sundance Film Festival and totally loved it but didn't have time to catch up with writer/director David Michôd until he came to Los Angeles a few weeks ago. Below you will find the complete video interview with Michôd, who spoke about developing the film, his history, and odd path to becoming a filmmaker, as it's a bit strange. Read on to watch the video below!

Riley Keough Joining the Growing Cast of Mad Max: Fury Road

Riley Keough

George Miller seems to be lining up some very pretty ladies for his next, new post-apocalyptic action movie. Heat Vision reports that Riley Keough, the 21-year-old hottie who's only claim to fame right now is being the granddaughter of Elvis Presley, has landed a role in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road. Keough was also recently cast in lesbian werewolf indie film Jack & Diane. Fury Road is supposed to star Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy as Mad Max, but Heat Vision says Keough is playing one of "Five Wives" along with Zoe Kravitz (The Brave One, Twelve) and Adelaide Clemens ("Love My Way", "All Saints"). Wedding Drama in Galt Niederhoffer's 'The Romantics' Trailer

The Romantics Trailer

Don't be fooled by the illustrious title, The Romantics isn't as good as it sounds. I saw it at Sundance and really didn't like it, but we'll get into that later. Apple has debuted the official trailer for Galt Niederhoffer's adaptation of her own book starring: Katie Holmes, Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Adam Brody and Elijah Wood. The film is essentially a more hipster-ish (or so I think) version of Rachel Getting Married, about a young girl's wedding and the chaos that ensues when her friends arrive. There is plenty of comedy and drama, but it's not even half as good as Rachel Getting Married, so tread carefully.

Disney Sets John Carter of Mars Movie for Release June 2012

John Carter of Mars

With this summer season coming to an end, movie studios are now working on scheduling the summer of 2012 full of blockbusters. ComingSoon reports that Disney has scheduled Andrew Stanton's upcoming epic live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars for release on June 8th, 2012. I originally predicted that they would schedule it for the late December spot that Tron and Avatar had, but it looks like they want to open it as a big summer blockbuster around the same weekend as X-Men: First Class opens next summer (2011). Disney also scheduled a 2012 release for Tim Burton's Frankenweenie movie.

Bekmambetov is Directing 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter'

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Although I wasn't thoroughly impressed with Wanted, my excitement for any future projects from director Timur Bekmambetov (of Night Watch, Day Watch as well) certainly hasn't waned. As a matter of fact a new bit of news has just turned it up to 11 as Empire spoke with the filmmaker who revealed that in addition to sharing producing duties with Tim Burton, Bekmambetov will also direct Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. On top of that, the director also shared some information on Wanted 2, a forthcoming 3D project called Red Asphalt; another 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and a very odd new take on Moby Dick.

CBS Films Picks Up Jason Statham's Remake of 'The Mechanic'

The Mechanic

In March we featured a badass promo trailer for a hitman movie starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster called The Mechanic. I'm happy to report today that fairly young distributor CBS Films has acquired The Mechanic for a US release, as it was originally produced by Millennium Films. A remake of the 1972 action thriller starring Charles Bronson, The Mechanic follows an elite hit man (Statham) as he teaches his trade to an apprentice (Foster) who has a connection to one of his previous victims. A twist! "We look forward to working with the CBS Films team on releasing this movie," said producers David Winkler & Robert Chartoff.

Green Lantern Wrapped + Harry Potter Writer Boards Sequel

Green Lantern

Back in February, production began on DC Entertainment's, Martin Campbell-directed adaptation of Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds. Now just over one hundred days later DC Entertainment's CCO and comic book writer Geoff Johns wrote on Twitter that principal photography had wrapped for the superhero flick and, "as co-producer of the film, I am very, very proud of what we’ve got in store. Much more to come." As DC moves into the effects heavy post-production process, Variety reports that writer Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix) has been brought in to write the already in development sequel.

German Film Company Developing 3D Animated 'Tarzan' Movie

Tarzan

The last time audiences saw the famous man of the jungle Tarzan swing into theaters was with Disney's animated adaptation just over 10 years ago, but now it looks like Tarzan will be headed back to theaters in 3D animated form but likely without the help of a Phil Collins musical soundtrack. Variety reports German film company Constantin Film is developing, which sounds like it'll be taking more cues from Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan novels, the first of which, Tarzan of the Apes, was published in 1912. The story follows a child raised by a clan of apes after his English aristocratic parents are killed while stranded in the jungle.
