Hayao Miyazaki is Developing a Sequel to 1992's 'Porco Rosso'
Interesting news coming out of the pages of Cut magazine in Japan translated by Nausicaa.net (via AICN). The site translated some quotes from Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki talking about their future line-up and Miyazaki's plans in his own immediate future (which is not, thankfully, retirement). He says that they're developing "two films in three years" that he would help plan (scripting, staffing, etc), although they could be directed by "rookie directors." One of the projects he's working on is Porco Rosso: The Last Sortie, some sort of odd sequel to 1992's Porco Rosso and "tragic story of a boy" that he wrote in the last few years.

Phantom City's Toronto After Dark Fan-Favorite Poster Series
Yet another series of beautiful, custom-designed posters for a few fan-favorite genre cult classics. There's an awesome film festival held in Toronto called the Toronto After Dark Film Festival that runs every late August (the last one just wrapped up yesterday) featuring great genre, horror and sci-fi films as well as a lot of cult classics. Although we're a bit late featuring these, I thought these posters that Phantom City Creative designed for some of the festival's "fan-favorites" were too beautiful not to mention. They made five posters they created for some of the best movies to play at the fest, including Let the Right One In and Dead Snow.

Check This Out: The Wormhole Coffeehouse with a DeLorean
As we glide into the weekend, I thought I'd feature a cool little video look at a coffehouse located in Chicago (map) called Wormhole Coffee (website located at thewormholecoffee.com). This was found by my buddy Jay West on Facebook and actually comes from the local site Chicago Now. As WGN-TV's Marcus Leshock explains: "I found that the Wormhole isn't just a Back to the Future coffee bar - it's a 1980's pop culture explosion." So he went there and shot a video of the place and now it's all up on YouTube for your viewing pleasure. And if you're in or around the Chicago area, you already know you need to take a visit to this place.

Paramount Holds an Open Casting Call for 13-14 Year Old Kids
This casting call has been out there for a little while, but here's a last minute reminder for anyone who might be considering going or knows any good young actors. Paramount is hosting an open casting call tomorrow (August 21st) morning at their studio in Hollywood. It's for a "Major Motion Picture" from Paramount but is untitled and unnamed and just so happens to be asking for male and female 13 to 14 year old kids. This gels with the reports back in May that this is probably for J.J. Abrams' Super 8, the mysterious sci-fi project we all saw that cool teaser trailer for earlier this summer. Recent news says it will start shooting in September.

Bryan Singer Drops Off Update on X-Men: First-Class at AICN
On a very quiet Friday afternoon, Bryan Singer decided to give a call to Ain't It Cool News' Harry Knowles and drop off a hell of an update on Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class (that he's producing), including an extensive look at the plot, the casting, his high hopes for the movie and so much more. This is going to be a huge buzz building machine and beyond that it's great hear all these kind of details so early on. Shooting is set to start on August 31st in a few weeks, which means production is gearing up quickly. The basic setting for the movie is the 1960's with JFK: "There is a spirit of a hopeful future that was prevalent in that time."

Strong Buzz Coming from Early Review of The Social Network
One of my most anticipated movies coming in fall is David Fincher's The Social Network. Despite being popularly known as the "Facebook Movie", I'm excited for it because I think it's a fascinating, contemporary story and I love David Fincher. I haven't seen it yet but a very early review of the film hit on Film Comment (via Awards Daily) written by critic Scott Foundas and it's even a lot more positive than I expected it to be. Foundas calls The Social Network, "splendid entertainment from a master storyteller, packed with energetic incident and surprising performances." You can read his full review or I've highlighted the best parts below.

Mark Waters is Directing Jim Carrey in 'Mr. Popper's Penguins'
Back in June we heard that after Noah Baumbach and Ben Stiller left the adaptation of the classic children's book Mr. Popper's Penguins, director Mark Waters (of Mean Girls, Freaky Friday) and Jim Carrey were rumored to be the next collaborators on the project. At the time nothing was certain, but now Deadline has confirmed that rumor as fact. Honestly, this doesn't sound as promising as a Baumbach led children's story, but Fox probably wants the big box office numbers of Alvin and the Chipmunks rather than another Fantastic Mr. Fox. Well, with two news stories in one day, at least Jim Carrey is making himself busy again.

Sound Off: Alexandre Aja's Piranha 3D - What Did You Think?
Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Arriving in theaters everywhere today is Alexandre Aja's Piranha 3D, a horror remake of a late 70's cult classic that actually features an impressive cast, including Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Eli Roth, Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd, Jerry O'Connell, Adam Scott, Riley Steele and Kelly Brook. But how is it? The movie currently has an amazing 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, is it really that good? How was the 3D? Is the cast the best part? Is this one of those surprise summer gems no one expected to great? So if you've seen it, leave a comment and tell us what you thought of Piranha 3D!

David Slade Might Be Directing Hugh Jackman in Wolverine 2
Just recently our Casting Tidbits let you know that Hugh Jackman had dropped out of Avon Men in favor of getting back in hardcore shape for Fox's sequel to Wolverine. Though we know Christopher McQuarrie was scripting the spin-off sequel, a director still hasn't been chosen, but Vulture just got a scoop on who'll be sitting in the director's chair. Apparently the choice has been narrowed down to Robert Schwentke (The Time Traveler's Wife, RED) and David Slade (Twilight: Eclipse, Hard Candy), but an inside source claims the latter will be the top pick with Jackman making the final call after meeting with both of them next week.

Watch: Official US Trailer for French Zombie Film 'The Horde'
IFC Films has debuted a new official US trailer on YouTube for the release of The Horde, a French zombie film that we've been writing about since earlier this year. I'm sure a few of you probably already have a copy of this on DVD, but for those of us in the US who are zombie fans, this is really our first chance to check it out. I like the gritty style of horror/genre films coming out of France these days, so I'm interested in seeing this, but this trailer is pretty awful, especially the shitty dubbing (not to mention that cheesy voice over). I don't know why they did that, but if you're into zombie movies (or French flicks) then check it out anyway.

Jim Carrey Could Be Rocking Out in 'Under Cover' for Summit
It feels like it's been forever since we've seen a great Jim Carrey film . I can't speak for A Christmas Carol or I Love You, Phillip Morris since both eluded me for different reasons, but Yes Man, The Number 23, and Fun with Dick and Jane were all duds. It sounds like Carrey is looking to make a comeback starring in Larry Charles' outrageous comedy Pierre, Pierre, and it looks like he has another comedy on the horizon. Pajiba reports that Summit is trying to snag Carrey to to lead Under Cover, the story of a recently divorced father of two who joins a youthful cover band to raise money to win the custody battle against his ex-wife. Read on!
