Toronto Review: Tom Hooper's Exceptional 'The King's Speech'
What an exhilarating way to end the festival! My last film of TIFF 2010 was the recently crowned Audience Award winner The King's Speech from director Tom Hooper and damn does it ever deserve that award. I had no clue what to expect going in, and was a bit nervous, but it's one of those wonderful films that in the first few minutes already had me thinking to myself "I'm going to love this." And indeed I did, and that says a lot, as a period piece drama is not usually something I go for. I'm going to make a bold statement - I think The King's Speech is on par with Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan as one of the very best movies of the year.

Final Toronto Bits: 'Beginners' & 'Rare Exports' Sell + Awards
Sunday was officially the very last day of the Toronto Film Festival and although we still have quite a bit of good content (wrap-ups, interviews, etc) on the way, news from the fest is starting to die down, but there are a few more sales to report on. Additionally, the winners of the various awards at TIFF were announced, including an important win for Tom Hooper's The King's Speech, which took home the coveted Audience Award (the same that Slumdog Millionaire won before it went on to nab Best Picture at the Oscars). Other recent fest sales include Beginners, Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale and the heavily disliked Passion Play.

'Sherlock Holmes' Writer Boards Jack Ryan Reboot 'Moscow'
After taking the pages of classic literature and spicing them up for the big screen with Guy Ritchie's take on Sherlock Holmes, Heat Vision reports the film's screenwriter, Anthony Peckham, will pen the upcoming reboot of Tom Clancy's spy thriller franchise featuring Jack Ryan. Breakout actor Chris Pine has been attached to the project for a while, and we just recently heard that Jack Bender (director of several episodes of "Lost") will helm the feature. Last we heard the project was still titled Moscow and would follow Ryan's exploits before he joined the CIA, which is a time in the character's life that has yet to be seen on screen.

Indie Trailer Sunday: Crazy, Weird Genetics Sci-Fi Movie 'JIM'
I just stumbled across this trailer last night on Apple and it is so frickin' weird and entirely crazy in every sense (and every scene) that I just had to feature it as today's indie trailer. The film is titled JIM, directed by Jeremy Morris-Burke, and has kind of an elaborate, expansive plot that I can't really explain... But I can tell you it's a sci-fi flick with some genetic research elements and other wacky things. One of the storylines (the other being set in the future) is about a guy who decides to go to a bio-tech firm with his dead wife's eggs to try and create an heir. And that's just the start. Let the trailer build, it goes to some very odd places.

Universal Developing Another 'Timecop' Without Van Damme?
This already sounds like a flop in the making, but oh well. We first reported a rumor way back in 2007 that Dark Horse was developing a remake of the Jean-Claude Van Damme 1990's sci-fi action classic Timecop. Years have passed and we haven't heard a word about it, but a sketchy movie site called What's Playing (via The Playlist) is now reporting that Universal is trying to develop a reboot of Timecop titled simply Timecop 2.0. They claim that Universal has "been developing the pic for four years" but won't be bringing back Van Damme (as it is a reboot). However, they say it will be on the release docket in the "next [12 to 18] months."

Video Review & Discussion: The Dowdle Bros' Thriller 'Devil'
I decided to see the Dowdle Brothers' new film Devil, produced and conceived by M. Night Shyamalan, this weekend as I thought the concept was quite intriguing and I was very curious to check it out. I actually enjoyed it, maybe because I'm a sucker for these kind of concepts and Shyamalan's dark, twisted stories, but it wasn't perfect by any means, especially the screenplay itself, which was actually written by Brian Nelson (of Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night). I really wanted to discuss my feelings on the film after, so I recorded a video blog with Jordan Raup from The Film Stage talking about Devil that you can watch directly below.

Casey Affleck & Andrew Dominik Reuniting for a Crime Movie
It seems that The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is becoming its own cult classic, mainly because it's such a fantastic movie that cinephiles are slowly discovering on their own and adding to their favorites. I saw it when it was originally released and loved it, but I knew not many other people would even see it. I've been waiting to see what director Andrew Dominik would end up doing next, as he hasn't shot anything since, and word is that it may be a new project that will have him reteaming with actor Casey Affleck, who played Robert Ford, again. Anyone who's seen Jesse James knows this is very exciting news.

Watch: Leighton Meester Gets Fiesty in 'The Roommate' Trailer
Screen Gems has debuted the official trailer for their upcoming early 2011 cheesy teenage horror flick The Roommate starring a few hotties like Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly. I know there's an audience for these kind of horror movies or they wouldn't continue making them, but this just seems so much like The Stepfather or any of those teenage thrillers, and I just don't care about them. Of course, everyone's going to watch this because Meester and Kelly and everyone in it is so damn hot (and there's a shower scene!) but I can still say it looks awful. Watch if you want, but I'm not sure many of you will care about it either. Enjoy!

Toronto Review: Jim Mickle's Vampire Road Film 'Stake Land'
I think I found my favorite Midnight Madness film of 2010. Vampires have become an overused, cliched and tired "villain" in genre flicks recently, but that doesn't mean an indie gem can't come along and prove that a great vampire flick can be dark, bloody, and badass once again, and that's exactly what Stake Land does. The best way to describe this would be to say it's like The Road, but not as bleak, and with a vampire epidemic being the cause of the apocalypse. That's an odd reference, but it's exactly what this is like, as it follows a vampire killer and his teen protege as they travel North to "New Eden" fending off nasty vamps.

Toronto Review: Janus Metz's Incredible War Doc 'Armadillo'
I'm not normally a big documentary guy, so I don't see many of them over the course of a year, but I'd heard some great things about a Danish doc called Armadillo that won the top prize in the Semaine de la Critique (Critics' Week) sidebar in Cannes earlier this year. I finally saw this documentary in Toronto and damn is it good, it's pretty much as incredible as you've likely heard, but not perfect. Armadillo is a documentary that follows a platoon of Danish soldiers on a six month tour to a front line army base in Afghanistan in the war against the Taliban in early 2009. It's intense and emotional and, yes I'll say it, better than The Hurt Locker.

Get a Free Sampler of Trent Reznor's The Social Network Score
I completely forgot to mention in my first reaction/review of David Fincher's The Social Network that the score, composed by Nine Inch Nail's Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, is fantastic. It's a refreshingly modern and entirely unique score that we haven't heard anything like before, yet it fits perfectly in many of the amazing scenes in the film. Although The Social Network isn't out for a few weeks (October 1st), Reznor has released a completely free five-track sampler of his score for the film, which you can download on their official website. It's only a quick sampler, but you'll get an idea of how great the score is with these tracks.

Elle Fanning and Kyle Chandler Cast in J.J. Abrams' Super 8?
We didn't expect to hear anything about this project for a while, but an inside source at Vulture has provided them with yet another scoop on J.J. Abrams' upcoming movie Super 8. If you recall, Vulture was the first to reveal early story details as well, so I trust their sources. They're saying that two actors have been cast in the Steven Spielberg throwback sci-fi drama: 12-year-old Elle Fanning, who was in Benjamin Button as well as the upcoming Nutcracker 3D and Sofia Coppola's Somewhere; and much-older actor Kyle Chandler, who plays Coach Taylor on NBC's "Friday Night Lights." No details on the roles they will be playing in it, though.
