Russell Crowe Appearing in RZA's 'The Man With the Iron Fist'
Wow, definitely didn't see this coming. E! News recently talked with hip hop musician, actor and soon-to-be filmmaker RZA on the red carpet recently and learned that Russell Crowe is appearing in his upcoming directorial debut The Man With the Iron Fist. If you don't know, the project is RZA's old school kung-fu martial arts flick kind of like that Wu-Tang vs The Golden Phoenix flick that we ran some trailers for a while ago. "I won't spoil it for you, but Russell's gonna be the baddest man alive," RZA told E! News. "That man is in fighting shape. That man will knock you out." An odd fit, but I love seeing Crowe fightin', so bring it on.

William H. Macy is Getting 'Freaky Deaky' for Charles Matthau
If you've seen films like Get Shorty, 3:10 to Yuma and Jackie Brown then you may already be somewhat familiar with the writing of author Elmore Leonard (even if you don't know it). Leonard is responsible for the books that inspired those films and it looks like yet another of his works is headed to the big screen. Variety reports the crime novel Freaky Deaky will be adapted by director Charles Matthau (son of the late, great actor Walter Matthau). Deadline adds even more news into the mix as they report William H. Macy will star in the story of 60's radicals who use their bomb-making skills to become capitalists in 1974.

Oliver Hirschbiegel Set to Adapt 'The Dark Side of the Moon'
Though I've failed to see his much praised chronicle of the final days of Adolf Hitler in Downfall, German director Oliver Hirschbiegel certainly impressed me with last year's thrilling drama Five Minutes of Heaven. Therefore, it's certainly exciting to hear from Variety that the filmmaker is now set to direct an adaptation of author Martin Suter's novel Die dunkle Seite des Mondes (or The Dark Side of the Moon). Writer David Marconi (Live Free or Die Hard) will pen the Pink Floyd worthy screenplay which tells the story of a successful attorney whose life is turned upside down after a mind-opening mushroom trip.

Lionsgate Finally Picks Gary Ross to Helm 'The Hunger Games'
Earlier this month we heard about a trio of big name directors in contention to helm Lionsgate's hopeful new franchise in an adaptation of the bestselling young adult novel The Hunger Games, the first in a trilogy of books loved by teens and adults alike. David Slade (Twiight: Eclipse) and Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition) were included in the running, but the least likely candidate for the job, Seabiscuit director Gary Ross seems to be the man for the job. Deadline says Ross has started negotiations with the studio to direct from a script written by the novel's author Suzanne Collins with a re-write from State of Play screenwriter Billy Ray.

Steve Buscemi, Sigourney Weaver and More Joining 'Rampart'
We've only previously heard about this project in a couple different Casting Tidbits updates, but this new chunk of casting it pretty sizable to file with other minor casting news. Variety has the word on a slew of new actors joining Rampart, a crime drama from director Oren Moverman (The Messenger). Joining the already cast Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster and Ice Cube will be the talents of Sigourney Weaver, Steve Buscemi, Anne Heche (on the verge of a comeback), Cynthia Nixon and Robin Wright. Moverman also wrote the film with James Ellroy (L.A. Confidential) which takes place during a real life scandal amongst the L.A.P.D.

Toronto Review & Video: Anderson's 'Vanishing on 7th Street'
Are you afraid of the dark? One great film I caught the other night at a midnight screening was the newest feature from The Machinist and Transsiberian director Brad Anderson titled Vanishing on 7th Street, which we featured a trailer for just a few weeks ago. This apocalyptic thriller focuses on four "survivors" of a mysterious supernatural occurrence who randomly meet up at a bar on 7th Street in an attempt to survive. It has a great concept with some very creepy elements, but with Hayden Christensen in the lead, you already know that the characters are going to be the weakest part, and that was definitely the case. But it's not bad.

Joe Pesci & Al Pacino May Be Joining Scorsese's 'The Irishman'
We may be on the verge of an amazing collection of the finest actors to ever grace mafia movies with their presence. For a couple of years we've been hearing about another collaboration between Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese with The Irishman, a film about Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran, a reputed criminal who has carried out more than 25 mob murders. Scorsese is currently working on The Invention of Hugo Cabret, but there's been talk that this could be his next project after that. Now even better news comes from Deadline who reports Al Pacino and three-time Scorsese collaborator Joe Pesci are circling the project.

Anchor Bay Finally Picks Up 'Tekken' for Distribution in 2011
After seeing an all-new poster back in June declaring that the adaptation of the fighting video game series Tekken would hit theaters August 5th, there seemed to be hope the film would see the light of day. But that date came and went and the film was nowhere to be seen on the big screen. But today Anchor Bay Films announced via press release that they would distribute the action-packed fighting frenzy of a film for a wide release sometime in 2011. Though no specific month or even season is mentioned as a potential release date, this is at least official confirmation that the film won't be stuck in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart (at least not for awhile).

James Gandolfini in 'Violet and Daisy,' Carey Mulligan is Out
Previously we had heard that writer Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious) was going to make his directorial debut with an indie assassin centic drama called Violet & Daisy. At the time, young and talented actresses Saoirse Ronan and Carey Mulligan were attached to star as the titular teenage assassins who are lured into what is supposed to be just another quick and easy job, only to find complications as the man they're supposed to kill is not what they expected. However, a new report from Variety only pegs Ronan as one half of the assassin pair with James Gandolfini also joining the cast. So what happened with Ms. Mulligan? Read on!

Gareth Edwards Teaming with Bekmambetov for Sci-Fi Flick
If the stellar trailers are any indicator, it looks like Monsters has a good chance of becoming this year's District 9. While it's probably too early to say whether or not the film will garner a Best Picture nomination like Neill Blomkamp's fantastic film (after all the film was just unveiled at the Toronto International Film Festival today), director Gareth Edwards is already using the buzz from the film to line up his next project. Deadline reports Edwards is setting up a new writing and directing gig with with producer Timur Bekmambetov (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, 9) involving "an epic human story, set in a futuristic world without humanity."

Kurtzman & Orci Talk Kahn and Klingons for 'Star Trek' Sequel
Though it certainly wasn't universally received, there are plenty of people looking forward to the impending sequel to J.J. Abrams 2009 franchise reboot of Star Trek. While details have been scarce (just the way Abrams likes it) the script is a work in progress. Luckily the forthcoming 200th issue of SFX magazine (via Trek Movie) talked to Abrams and writers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci about the potential of the anticipated sequel. I don't want to get anyone too excited, but Klingons and the infamous villain Kahn are certainly talking points, but you'll find all that in the information that they were willing to disclose below.
