Toronto Review: Ben Affleck's New Crime Drama 'The Town'

Ben Affleck's The Town

And here we go... My very first movie of the Toronto International Film Festival this year was Ben Affleck's sophomore directorial effort The Town, based on Chuck Hogan's novel Prince of Thieves. Before I get into this, I want to preface it by saying that I'm a huge fan of Affleck's first film Gone Baby Gone, it's one of my personal all-time favorites, I loved it through and through. That said, The Town is not one of my favorites, not by a long shot. It's a solid film with some fantastic performances, but heavily flawed, with the script and dialogue being the weakest parts of it. I couldn't ever really get into it, and damn was Blake Lively terrible.

Toronto Review & Video: James Gunn's Newest Comedy 'Super'

James Gunn's Super

My first Midnight Madness film of the Toronto Film Festival this year was Slither director James Gunn's new "superhero" comedy Super, starring Rainn Wilson as The Crimson Bolt (as pictured above). It's one of those wacky regular-citizen-decides-to-become-a-crime-fighter comedies in the same vein as Kick-Ass or Defendor, but with Gunn's own badass, unique comedic and stylistic touch. It's a helluva lot of fun and it's one of those hilarious indie comedies that you have to watch with a group of people (because everyone will be cheering) but unfortunately I didn't love it. I had a great time watching it, but I still love Kick-Ass more.

William Monahan Writing Adaptation of Joe Kosinski's Oblivion

Joe Kosinski's Oblivion

Wow, big news for Tron Legacy director Joe Kosinski. Deadline is reporting that Disney has hired Oscar winning writer William Monahan (who wrote The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven, Body of Lies, and Edge of Darkness; and is making his directorial debut with London Boulevard) will be writing the adaptation of Oblivion, Kosinski's epic new sci-fi graphic novel series which might be his next project. This is Monahan's first foray into science fiction which should be very exciting, because this looks like an awesomely epic sci-fi project that will benefit greatly from having a script written by someone as brilliant/talented as Monahan.

Interview: 'Never Let Me Go' Director Mark Romanek - Part 2

Mark Romanek - Never Let Me Go

Yesterday we published the first half of our long, in-depth interview with Never Let Me Go director Mark Romanek that Peter from SlashFilm and I conducted at the Telluride Film Festival. Today we have the second half of the interview, which you can read below, that covers a lot of details on shooting and filming Never Let Me Go as well as some interesting thoughts on his career as well as his brief time working on The Wolfman (this year's remake). Again, even if you're not too familiar with Romanek, I highly suggest reading through this interview - it's incredibly informative and you may become a supporter of Romanek by the end.

Must Watch: First Official Trailer for Clint Eastwood's Hereafter

Hereafter Trailer

It is definitely a year for dark, psychological thrillers. Warner Bros has debuted the official trailer for Clint Eastwood's Hereafter, the supernatural thriller starring Matt Damon as a guy who can speak with ghosts. Yes, that's part of the plot, and no that's not a spoiler. In addition to Damon, this stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Richard Kind, Jay Mohr, Cécile De France and Frankie/George McLaren as the little kid. I'm really not sure what to make of this. I usually enjoy Eastwood's films, but this time I'm not sure if this is actually something he should've tackled, maybe Eastwood should stay out of the supernatural realm. I'm not sure... Thoughts?

Sexy New 'Tron Legacy' Poster Unveiled Featuring Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde as Quorra

More Tron Legacy goodies to make you drool. This time I really mean it, as ComingSoon found a sexy new poster/banner featuring Olivia Wilde as Quorra, a mysterious character from the Tron universe that helps Sam Flynn in his journey to find his father. You can check out that new poster below and I've also included another one that shows Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) poses with a similar background, since that recently hit on a Hedlund fan site and it looks similar (so I thought I'd feature them side-by-side). I'm still excited as hell for this and will be covering anything cool that hits until it arrives in theaters December. Check this out!

Director John McTiernan is Helming Action Thriller 'Shrapnel'

John McTiernan

The man who once directed such fine action thrillers as Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October hasn't had much of a directing career over the past decade. Of course, no filmmaker wants their last two films to be the remake disaster Rollerball or the convoluted military drama Basic, so John McTiernan is getting back in the director's chair. Variety reports that McTiernan has signed on to direct yet another action thriller with Shrapnel, the story of two war veterans who hunt each other in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Sounds simple enough, and the good news is the Evan Daugerty written script appeared on the Black List in 2008.

Andy Fickman to Direct Anna Faris, Not Ryan Reynolds, in 'TMI'

Andy Fickman / Anna Faris

Way back in November we heard about a new romantic comedy that would see Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris back on screen together for the first time since Just Friends. However, Variety says Reynolds' crazy busy schedule has stopped him from starring in TMI - the story of two best friends that accidentally sleep together but find out they know "too much information" about each other to make it work. Reynolds will still stay on as an executive producer along with Faris who will still play the role of the female lead. In addition, Andy Fickman, who directed the upcoming cliche chick flick You Again, has signed on to helm the film.

Diego Luna & Gael Garcia Bernal Join Ferrell's Spanish Comedy

Diego Luna & Gael Garcia Bernal

Back in August we learned about a strange new project called Casa De Mi Padre (or The House of My Father), a Spanish language comedy produced by and starring Will Ferrell with a story being kept under wraps. Though we don't any new story details, we do have a fantastic bit of casting and a small detail that gives us a hint as to what kind of laughs we can expect from the project. THR reports top notch Mexican actors and good friends Diego Luna (Milk) and Gael Garcia Bernal (Babel) have joined the cast of the film which will be told in an overly dramatic telenovela style complete with English subtitles. ¡Ay dios mio!

Full Trailer for 'Saw 3D' Plays Like a Horror Theme Park Ride

Saw 3D Trailer

The long-running Saw franchise has been run into the ground so hard that I'm starting to think that the real trap is the movie itself. The emphasis is clearly on the Saw 3D experience making you part of the traps, but it feels like a joke. The new trailer (via Yahoo) itself looks like a commercial for a theme park ride with cuts to the "audience" in 3D glasses having their mind blown by saw blades flying out of the screen, spiked roller coaster harnesses locking them into their seats and Jigsaw grabbing someone from their seat. At least Cary Elwes returns, and I'm pretty sure that's Chester Bennington of Linkin Park stuck in a trap too. Beware!

Stephen Sommers Might Be Adapting Koontz's 'Odd Thomas'

Stephen Sommers / Odd Thomas

There aren't too many filmmakers who I find as underwhelming and unimpressive as Stephen Sommers. From The Mummy franchise to his recent craptastic adaptation of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, I just find no value in his filmmaking even at the most basic level. Therefore I'm not too thrilled with Production Weekly's update (via Twitter) that Sommers is looking to adapt the first novel in Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas series. The supernatural mysteries focus on the titular Odd Thomas (who narrates the books almost like a film noir) who lacks ambition working as a fry cook in California but has the gift of seeing and conversing with ghosts.

Toronto Review & Video: Joaquin Phoenix's Doc 'I'm Still Here'

I'm Still Here Review

What the hell did I just see? My second film of the Toronto Film Festival (first was The Town) that I just saw today was the Casey Affleck directed documentary I'm Still Here about Joaquin Phoenix's attempt to become a rapper. The film just hit limited theaters today and also showed in Venice, so there's some good buzz for it already. I will admit that I actually enjoyed this, it was entertaining and it was a fairly fascinating character study, but it's not perfect, and it's not anything more than just a bit of entertainment. And I'm still not even sure if it was all just an act or not, but that's one of the most interesting ideas. Was he just acting?
