Warner Bros Picks Up a 'Big Idea' Sci-Fi Spec Script 'Expulsion'

Exploding Earth

It's a tremendous success for Warner Bros that Chris Nolan's big summer blockbuster Inception has earned a whopping $753 million worldwide to date, and that has apparently given the studio a boost in confidence and cash to invest in other big, bold, original concepts. Deadline reports that WB has picked up a spec script from author Gregg Hurwitz called Expulsion, a big budget tentpole science fiction film not based on any previous work. Here's the concept: After an act of terror destroys Earth, a small band of survivors escape to a planet beyond the solar system. Alas, that's all we know about this for now, but I like the sound of it so far.

Toronto Video Interview: Rodrigo Cortés - Director of 'Buried'

Rodrigo Cortés

I first saw the buried alive thriller Buried (watch the trailer), starring Ryan Reynolds (and only him) at the Sundance Film Festival in January, where I called it one of my favorite films of the fest. I tried to interview director Rodrigo Cortés at Sundance, but Lionsgate canceled all interviews with him, so now nine months have passed and I finally had the chance to sit down with Cortés for an interview about Buried in Toronto. I've been waiting to talk with him since January, so we covered a lot of different topics, from the concept to shooting in coffins to working with Ryan Reynolds and much more. One of my all-time favorite interviews!

Watch: 'Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room' Early Teaser

Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room

This is one of those great finds that I feel could eventually be a cult hit, but we really don't know too much about it yet. Quiet Earth featured this teaser trailer for a magical fantasy film called Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room from English director Mike Le Han. It’s the story of a young girl who gets more than she bargained for when she checks out "movement" in the reading room of the shop across the street. There she meets Mrs. Peppercorn who shows her how magical the world can be... The production values in this look amazing, I just hope the visual effects are impressive, too. Check out this wonderful teaser below!

James McAvoy Chats About Prof. Xavier in X-Men: First Class

James McAvoy / Charles Xavier

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm pretty damn excited for Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, partially because I think Vaughn is an amazing director, but also because it has an incredible cast, lead by James McAvoy as Charles Xavier / Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto. We've heard a lot of major details about the project, specifically this big update from Bryan Singer, but now it's McAvoy's time to talk about it. MTV talked with actor in Toronto and got a few interesting quotes from him. "I'm basically going to try and bury Patrick's performance," he says. But it'll feel like Stewart at the end.

Very Ethereal Official Poster Arrives for Eastwood's Hereafter

Hereafter

Warner Bros has debuted the official poster (found via Awards Daily) for Clint Eastwood's Hereafter, the Sixth Sense-like supernatural drama starring Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard, Cécile De France, Richard Kind and many others. The film actually premiering at the Toronto Film Festival a few weeks ago and didn't receive any good reviews, at all. Our friend Jordan Raup of The Film Stage gave it only 5/10 saying it was "a laughably cliche exercise that was uncomfortable to behold." Over on SlashFilm, Peter gave it 6.5/10 say it has "bad storytelling" and "logically-laughable coincidences." That doesn't sound too good, but check it out.

Rob Zombie Halts 'The Blob' Remake to Direct 'Lords of Salem'

Rob Zombie

It's been over a year since we heard the somewhat troubling news that musician-turned-filmmaker Rob Zombie had his eyes set on remaking The Blob. Well, today there's simultaneously good news for both those who hate and love the dark, twisted films from Zombie's disturbed mind. Deadline reports the director has shelved his remake of the 1950's horror classic in favor of directing The Lords of Salem, the newest project from the Haunted Films banner (run by the creators of Paranormal Activity) which was also behind James Wan's TIFF featured film Insidious. Details on the supernatural thriller can be found below.

Second Epic Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Official Trailer

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Trailer

"Only I can live forever..." Warner Bros has debuted the second and final epic theatrical trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I which you can see in high res below. This is the second trailer following the first debut in June and this one makes that first trailer look tame. With all the new footage, I think they've made the first part of this Harry Potter finale look as incredible and exciting as Tron Legacy in my mind, and that's a hell of an achievement, but damn it looks so frickin' good. I've been watching these since it started and I cannot wait for the conclusion, it's going to be unforgettable. Fire up the trailer below!

Lawrence Kasdan's 'Darling Companion' Gets Impressive Cast

Lawrence Kasdan

Though the screenwriter behind such classics as Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi had a hand in crafting the script for Alex Proyas' next directing gig with Paradise Lost, previously Lawrence Kasdan hadn't written or directed a film since the '03 adaptation of Stephen King's Dreamcatcher. However, Variety has word on a new directing job for Kasdan from a script he also wrote with his wife Meg Kasdan. This new indie, Darling Companion, has Richard Jenkins (Let Me In), Diane Keaton (Morning Glory, Family Stone), Kevin Kline (The Conspirator), and Elisabeth Moss ("Mad Men") providing their acting talents.

Toronto Video Interview: Julia's Eyes Director Guillem Morales

Belén Rueda in Julia's Eyes

As a follow-up to my interview with producer/mentor Guillermo del Toro yesterday, I have an interview with the actual writer and director of Julia's Eyes - Spanish filmmaker Guillem Morales. Morales is the guy who came up with the unique concept that eventually got del Toro on-board to produce, as you heard in his interview. This time I talked with Morales about that idea, how he worked with del Toro, and what it was like to shoot the film this way, as it's what makes it so original. It's as fascinating & entertaining as my chat with GdT, so I hope you watch this video as well, even if you're not too familiar with Julia's Eyes yet. Enjoy!

Though we'd previously heard about the potential of a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie from Samuel L.
