Indie Trailer Sunday: Neil Mackay's Action Indie 'Skeleton Lake'

Skeleton Lake Trailer

Today's indie trailer is one that was sent to me via email that I watched and was considerably impressed by. It's an indie action flick (we don't see too many of those these days) titled Skeleton Lake about a grizzled, angry, well-armed Vietnam War vet who encounters six ruthless bank robbers in the forest. The trailer, via the official website, is pretty self explanatory and features some impressive cinematography, good teases of fun action, and so on. It's best described as an indie "Heat meets Predator." Give it a chance, don't tear it to shreds just because you don't like the trailer. Anyway, watch the first teaser trailer for Skeleton Lake below.

Martin Freeman is Reportedly Set as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit

The Hobbit / Martin Freeman

With production finally officially getting the greenlight, it's time to start getting into the nitty-gritty details of this highly anticipated adaptation. While they haven't officially announced any casting on Peter Jackson's The Hobbit yet, Deadline has been saying some very interesting things about what to expect with casting. First, we know that Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis will be back as Gandalf and Gollum, respectively, but who else is in? British actor Martin Freeman is said to "soon be set to play Bilbo Baggins," confirming rumors from in September that he'll be playing the lead in Peter Jackson's forthcoming two-part adaptation.

Teaser Poster for Disney's Animated 'Mars Needs Moms!' Lands

Mars Needs Moms!

Mom needs a little space. Disney has unveiled the first teaser poster via Yahoo for their upcoming animated movie Mars Needs Moms!, the very last production from Zemeckis' ImageMovers Digital. The movie is an animated adventure comedy in 3D based on a 2007 children's book by Berkeley Breathed about a young boy named Milo, voiced by Seth Green. Milo finds out "just how much he needs his mom (Joan Cusack) when she's nabbed by Martians who plan to steal her mom-ness for their own young." So he goes on an adventure with a spaceship to the planet to find her. I'm sure an actual trailer for this will follow shortly, so stay tuned!

Bradley Cooper Denies Rumors About Being a 'Flash' Candidate

Bradley Cooper / The Flash

Earlier in the week, it was rumored that Bradley Cooper (The Hangover, A-Team) was in the running to star as The Flash in the upcoming DC Comics adaptation. We know that a Flash movie is in the works, DC's Geoff Johns has talked about it, but they haven't started any casting yet. Cooper spoke to SuperHeroHype recently, "I've never heard anything about it ever," he said, laughing it all off. However, the original report says that Cooper is the "current favorite," which means maybe Warner Bros has yet to offer him the role, but will be in the next few weeks. There's still the potential for just about anything, but don't get too excited yet.

First Impressive Poster for Seth Rogen's The Green Hornet Hits

The Green Hornet

Columbia Pictures has debuted the first teaser poster for Michel Gondry's The Green Hornet with Seth Rogen and Jay Chou. This poster was first found on the NYCC showfloor by Latino Review, then officially unveiled by ComingSoon. I'm actually impressed, this is a very sleek design, I like the symmetry and logo in the headlines, it's pretty cool for an early teaser poster for this movie. We haven't seen an official US trailer since the first one debuted back in June, but I'm sure Sony/Columbia is gearing up some big marketing soon enough. Check out the first Green Hornet teaser poster below and let us know if you're impressed by it, too.

Jet Li Cast in Kung Fu Epic Titled 'Flying Swords of Dragon Gate'

Jet Li

Oh boy, here we go again. Even though he once said, years ago while making Fearless, that he'd never star in a martial arts epic again, the Associated Press (via MarketSaw) reports that Jet Li has been cast in exactly that - a "new 3-D kung fu epic" title Flying Swords of Dragon Gate. It's being directed by veteran Kong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark (The Blade, Once Upon a Time in China III & V + TV Series, Seven Swords, All About Women ) and will also star China's Zhou Xun and Chen Kun, Taiwan's Kwai Lun-mei and Mavis Fan. It has a modest budget of around $35 million and is being planned for release in December 2011. Read on!

Watch: Official Trailer for Gus Van Sant's New Drama 'Restless'

Restless Trailer

Columbia Pictures has debuted the first official trailer on Moviefone for Gus Van Sant's new teenage drama Restless starring young actors Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper. The film has somewhat of an odd premise, almost a bit like Clint Eastwood's Hereafter, that dabbles a bit in the supernatural, with ghosts and things of that sort. It definitely still has the very teenage, indie Gus Van Sant feel to it (that some of you may love), but they're obviously trying to play this as a more mainstream flick. I guess I will say that looks like a wonderfully charming and emotionally riveting romantic drama, I'm curious to check it out. Watch it below!

Fox Searchlight Launches a Fantastic New Website for 127 Hours

127 Hours

Based on the response from the latest trailer we featured last week for Danny Boyle's 127 Hours, a lot of you are very excited for this film, as well you all should be since it's damn good. To fuel the hype even more, Fox Searchlight (one of my favorite indie studios) has launched a fantastic official website for the movie, which stars James Franco as real-life mountaineer Aron Ralston, who became trapped by a boulder while hiking in Utah in 2003. The design is wonderful, the music is great, this is one of those sites you just have to stop and check out. Though I think I'm tired of seeing that quote from ComingSoon's Ed Douglas (kidding).

The Hobbit is Greenlit, Peter Jackson Starts Shooting in February

Peter Jackson

I feel like a broken record saying all this, but we can finally report, from multiple sources, that The Hobbit is greenlit, ready to go, with Peter Jackson at the helm, and shooting starting early next year. The NY Times was the first to report that Jackson's deal to direct is finalized and Warner Bros' and MGM have "worked out their deal to finance the pair of films." The Wrap has also announced that The Hobbit has been greenlit with shooting starting in February. No more sources needed, this is a done deal, it's time to start getting really excited about seeing J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novel finally hit the big screen in two movies in 2012 and 2013.

Monstrous Horror Marathon: Tony Todd Haunts in 'Candyman'

Candyman

"What's blood for, if not for shedding?" Another horror classic I have never seen, until I saw it recently, is Candyman, the 1992 horror movie starring Tony Todd as a hook-wielding villain and a young Virginia Madsen. Yes, shame on me, but that's why I'm running this monstrous horror series, so that I can catch up on all these great horror films I haven't seen. The funny thing is that I already knew the mirror gimmick that this was based around (although I'm not sure if that's just an urban legend that they recycled for this), but I didn't know much about the film. That said, I enjoyed it, but didn't love it, as it lost my interest by the end.

Review: Warren Ellis' RED is a Flawed, But Fiercely Funny Movie

Warren Ellis' RED

Helen Mirren ripping into a group of suit-clad Secret Service agents with a massive .50 cal machine gun, enjoying smirk deep set into her eyes. John Malkovich coddling a pink, stuffed pig that may or may not be concealing any number or type of weaponry. Bruce Willis breaking arms and taking names, literally. These are just a few of the things you will be privy to while enjoying RED, the new action comedy based on Warren Ellis' comic book series, that proves it doesn't matter how much you're making off Social Security as long as you carry a big gun and aren't afraid to use it.

Gorgeous Promo Poster Set for Darren Aronofsky's 'Black Swan'

Black Swan

Wow - I didn't expect to see anything like this! Empire has debuted a series of four new promo posters for Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Winona Ryder and Barbara Hershey. This film is one of my favorites of 2010 and I wasn't that into the official poster (too much make up for my tastes), but these are simply stunning. I'm not sure who designed them, but I think they're being put out to help drum up interest in the film's London Film Festival screenings. If you haven't seen the trailer for Black Swan, it's a must watch. Everyone should add this to your list of must see films for the fall.
