Monstrous Horror Marathon: Darren Bousman's 'Mother's Day'
I had the opportunity to catch Darren Bousman's remake of Mother's Day after it premiered at Fantastic Fest, where Jeremy saw it and panned it, but I have a different opinion than him. Let me preface by saying that I'm a big fan of Bousman's directing. I've admittedly enjoyed almost all of his movies, despite the hate most of them get. I would say out of the entire Saw franchise, I think Saw II and III, which he directed (in addition to Saw IV), are the best films in the series. I don't care if anyone thinks that discredits my opinion, but there's just something about his style, his pacing, the way he directs, that I almost always enjoy seeing.

Robert Rodriguez Says 'Sin City' Sequel is Next After 'Spy Kids 4'
We've heard a few small updates regarding a sequel to the adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel Sin City for a little while now, and one even had mentioned a possible production start towards the end of this year. But with Robert Rodriguez gearing up for another Spy Kids (a franchise reboot), that is definitely not going to happen. However, The Playlist discovered that the director recently mentioned the sequel in a Facebook live chat yesterday and said that the anticipated sequel is planned as his next film following Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. However, he's careful to clarify that it's not a guarantee just yet, as always,

Rumor: Bradley Cooper is the Top Contender to Play The Flash
Though it's not exactly that big of a story, Deadline recently reported that the scripts for Green Lantern 2 and the slowly developing adaptation of The Flash will be turned into Warner Bros. sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. No big deal. However, we are somewhat interested in a recent rumor that pegs a familiar name to another DC Comics property. Moviehole is saying Bradley Cooper, who was once a major contender for Green Lantern before the role went to Ryan Reynolds, is the current favorite to play the Barry Allen iteration of The Flash. It would be quite an interesting switch considering Reynolds was once up for The Flash as well.

Rhys Ifans Cast in Unknown Villain Role in Spider-Man Reboot
Hot on the heels of the recent announcement of Emma Stone taking the role of Gwen Stacy, the lead female and love interest for Spider-Man, it looks like we now have a villain cast for the web-slinging franchise reboot. Deadline is reporting Sony Pictures has cast British actor Rhys Ifans in an unknown villain role. You may not know the actor's name, but you've likely seen him in quirky roles in films like Notting Hill, Pirate Radio and a great supporting performance in last year's Greenberg. In addition to this Spider-Man casting, Ifans is likely to become more familiar following his appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Video Interview: 'Monsters' Writer & Director Gareth Edwards
It makes me very happy to see Gareth Edwards' Monsters getting so much buzz - it's currently ranked #16 on IMDb's MOVIEmeter, which is great to see. After first catching the indie sci-fi film in Cannes and falling completely in love with it, I was hoping it would get the attention it deserves. If you're familiar with the film, you know there's a lot of questions to ask Gareth Edwards. Not only is he a British filmmaker making his first sci-fi feature starring two Americans set mostly in Mexico, but he shot it on a shoestring budget, did the writing & cinematography on his own, and also did all of the visual effects on his own computer. Fire it up!

Great Series of Korean Character Posters for 'The Warrior's Way'
One movie coming up this fall that I'm pretty excited about is Sngmoo Lee's The Warrior's Way, which is another one of those hyper-stylized kung fu westerns, but this one actually has a great cast, including South Korean actor Jang Dong Gun, Kate Bosworth, Geoffrey Rush and Danny Huston, playing some sort of deformed madman. We ran an awesome trailer for this a few weeks ago, which everyone needs to watch, but we also have four new character posters courtesy of IMPAwards for your viewing pleasure. Despite these being from Korea, they actually have some English text, and they're pretty damn cool. Check 'em out below!

Monstrous Horror Marathon: The Car (1977) & The Blob (1988)
I'm in New York right now, so I'm not fully up to speed with my Monstrous Horror Movie Marathon, but I do have a few films I want to talk about that I saw earlier last week before I flew out here. One horror movie I've been looking forward to seeing for a very long time is The Car, from 1977. I first picked up on it when Futurama referenced it for the episode "The Honking," which also got its title from The Howling, a werewolf film I've got on my list to see when I get back home. But it was up the Toronto Film Festival after I interviewed Guillermo del Toro that I got the final kick in the ass that made me want to watch it right away.

Indie Trailer Sunday: 'Night Catches Us' With Anthony Mackie
Now this is an indie trailer I'm truly happy to feature today. Night Catches Us was a Sundance selection that gained quite some critical praise at that festival earlier this year but hasn't gained much buzz elsewhere since. That said, I've been keeping my eye on it, and now that this trailer is out, I thought I'd feature it. The film stars Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) and Kerry Washington (Lakeview Terrace), with music by The Roots, and is a powerful drama set in the 70's following the Black Power movement. This looks like a wonderful drama with amazing performances all around and I'm looking forward to seeing it. Watch below!

They Live Remake Still in the Works But Without the Sunglasses
This is a travesty! How can you remake John Carpenter's cult classic They Live without the sunglasses? If you don't know what we're talking about, maybe you should pick up a copy of They Live on DVD and see for yourself. A remake of They Live was first announced way back in 2008 and hasn't been mentioned since. At the NY Comic-Con, sci-fi site io9 caught up with producer Eric Newman (also of The Thing prequel) and got some details out of him about the remake, including who's writing - D.B. Weiss. But apparently HBO's "Game of Thrones" has kept him too busy to get into this, but he says "he's an old friend and a talented guy."

Tony Gilroy's 'Bourne Legacy' Sequel Won't Have Jason Bourne
It was officially announced early last week that director Tony Gilroy (of Michael Clayton, Duplicity) would be taking over the Bourne franchise to bring us the fourth new sequel called The Bourne Legacy. But, of course, since Paul Greengrass won't be back, neither will Matt Damon, so this is not going to be the sequel we're all probably expecting. Gilroy called Jeff Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere after the news broke last week to give him actual details on what to expect: "This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one's replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter... this is a stand-alone project." Wow.

NY Comic-Con Video Blog: The Thing Prequel Footage Unveiled
There weren't many movie panels at the New York Comic-Con this weekend, but Universal had a strong presence with a few presentations, including a big reveal for The Thing prequel. We've been waiting to see some footage from the movie and we got a first look at some actual photos last week. But today they finally unveiled a teaser trailer for a fairly small audience at the NY Comic-Con and it was actually pretty awesome, I was very impressed. It's a beautifully edited, exciting and thrilling teaser with a few bits of snowy footage and some glimpses of the alien/creature. Everyone else I talked to sitting with us seemed to enjoy it, too.
