Del Toro Adapting Animated Short 'Alma' at DreamWorks Anim

Alma

Looks like Guillermo del Toro is already starting to guide DreamWorks down a new path. Heat Vision reports that del Toro is helping develop a feature-length version of Rodrigo Blaas' award winning animated short film Alma. I'm not sure if many people got to see this last year when it first premiered, but there's an embedded version of the full short which you can watch below. It's a charming, wonderfully animated short made by former Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas, who will write & direct the feature at DreamWorks. Blaas, to help take some workload off del Toro, is also helping co-direct his other new DWA project Trollhunters.

Shyamalan Secretly Working on New Sci-Fi 'One Thousand A.E.'

M. Night Shyamalan

What's this all about? M. Night Shyamalan has a new project he's working on. And no, it's not horror, but it is science fiction. Heat Vision is reporting that Shyamalan has been in town this week putting together his next project, titled One Thousand A.E., which he will apparently take on as his "next directorial effort." It's being developed at Overbrook Ent., Will Smith's company, but according to THR this has nothing to do with that other secret Shyamalan project from the summer with Bruce Willis and Bradley Cooper attached. This one apparently has a script written by The Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta - okay, now I'm interested.

Early Cast Coming Together for Indie Horror Film 'The Home'

The Home

Last year we wrote about the announcement of a new indie horror project in the works called The Home, written by AICN's Eric Vespe, to be directed by Kristoffer Aaron Morgan. They've been working on putting together the production for a while and we've been waiting to hear news about it. Well, Bloody-Disgusting received a big casting scoop today for this film, which looks like it might have an impressive cast lined-up. Although not officially signed yet, they're in discussions with Brian Cox (Zodiac, Trick 'r Treat, Red, The Escapist) and Cloris Leachman (Young Frankenstein, You Again) to star, with a few others set as well.

David Tennant Thinks Zemeckis' 'Yellow Submarine' Has Sunk?

Yellow Submarine

Potentially interesting update on Robert Zemeckis courtesy of BleedingCool. While we've heard recently that the decision to shut down his animated studio ImageMovers Digital has made him re-consider to the live-action world with a new time travel project, we thought he was still supposed to be finishing up Mars Needs Mom! and Yellow Submarine, his new CGI take on the trippy Beatles movie. Well, on an episode of Paul O'Grady Live from the UK a few weeks ago, British actor David Tennant, who was auditioning for a role in it, spoke about how he doesn't "think it's happening any more. I think the film has gone away."

Watch: Fun New Introductory Teaser Trailer for Pixar's Cars 2!

Cars 2

They're back! Pixar has debuted the first teaser trailer (on YouTube) for their newest sequel Cars 2. This is one of those teasers that should've played in front of Toy Story 3, like when they used to tease their next movie before their latest movie. The reason there are lasers (besides that Mission: Impossible IV is also out next year) is that the story in this sequel involves Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry The Cable Guy) meeting up with another car named Finn McMissile, a British spy, during their journey around the world for the Race of Champions. Empire has more concept art. Here comes the Cars backlash, I'm sure.

Johnny Depp Eager to Have Rob Marshall Direct 'The Thin Man'

Thin Man / Rob Marshall

Though they're hard at work on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, apparently Johnny Depp is already eager to work with director Rob Marshall again. Vulture reports the actor has been "aggressively courting" the Chicago filmmaker to sit in the director's chair for The Thin Man, an adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's 1934 novel that would star Depp himself. The only thing that my prevent the quick reunion upon completion of the swashbuckling sequel is the lack of a script for the adaptation. In addition, Marshall is will be meeting with Universal to discuss directing an adaptation of the Wizard of Oz inspired musical Wicked.

Anthony Hopkins in Another Exorcist Movie: 'The Rite' Trailer

The Rite Trailer

There have been enough exorcism related films recently to fit into their own genre, but that would mean we still have many more to come (which is true). Warner Bros has debuted a trailer on Apple for a movie called The Rite, directed by Mikael Hafstrom (1408), starring Anthony Hopkins as an "exorcism expert" in Italy. I remember writing about this when it first got announced, but I had no clue what to expect - now we know. This has a much more epic feel to it than, say, The Last Exorcism, but I'm still not sure if it'll be any good. At least it has impressive production values, which may count for quite a bit in the end. Check it out!

Universal Adapting Cate Tiernan's Witch Fantasy Series 'Sweep'

Sweep Covers

Yet another contender to fill the void that will be left upon the conclusion of The Twilight Saga has entered the ring. Variety reports Universal has picked up rights to Cate Tiernan's young adult fantasy series Sweep. Robert Nelson Jacobs will script the adaptation of the story (which spans 15 books) following a 16-year-old girl who discovers she's a blood witch, descended from an ancient and powerful line. Ultimately, she must decide whether to use her powers for good or evil. While every young adult series will undoubtedly be linked back to Twilight, the first book starts in an eerily familiar way for those who know the teen vampire novels.

Robert Downey Jr and Columbia Pictures Have an 'Emergency!'

Robert Downey Jr. / Emergency

We recently heard about a new starring vehicle for Robert Downey, Jr. in the form of Yucatan, the first priority project for Team Downey, the production banner founded by the actor and his wife Susan Downey. Now Team Downey has another project in the works as Columbia Pictures has announced, via press release, their option of the rights to Neil Strauss' non-fiction book Emergency!: This Book Will Save Your Life. In addition to producing the project, there's a chance that Downey could star in the film as well. Also, much buzzed about screenwriter Allan Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) will script the adaptation.

Universal and Chris Meledandri Bringing Manga 'Pluto' to Life

Meledandri / Pluto

Adaptations of popular manga are already headed to the big screen with WB's upcoming productions of favorites like Akira and Bleach. Now Deadline reports Universal and Illumination Entertainment's Chris Meledandri (producer of Despicable Me and former Fox Animation exec) will are jumping into the game with a live-action/CG hybrid adaptation of Pluto. The popular Japanese manga series is based on Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy, but writer Naoki Urasawa reinterprets the story as a suspenseful murder mystery starring Gesicht, a Europol robot detective trying to solve the case of a string of robot and human deaths.

Director Pierre Morel May Call on the Supernatural with 'Ouija'

Morel / Ouija

Though it seemed to take Hollywood's obsession with established intellectual property a bit too far, the Ouija film from Hasbro and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes was given a shove into the intriguing category with the hiring of Tron Legacy and "Lost" writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz to script the project. Now 24 Frames has another interesting development with news that director Pierre Morel (Taken, From Paris with Love) is the top contender to direct the story that doesn't take the expected horror route with the Ouija board, but rather aims to deliver an action-adventure not unlike Disney's National Treasure series.

First up, Variety reports Sandra Bullock will star in and executive produce a new drama at Warner Bros. with The Proposal director Anne Fletcher at the helm. Very little is known about the untitled project which spawned from a pitrch from writers Pamela Falk and Michael Ellis, but it's described as An Unmarried Woman meets Saturday Night Fever. However, this will not be Bullock's next project to follow-up The Blind Side since she's looking to take a lead role in Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity.
