2011 Golden Globe Awards Nominees - 'The King's Speech' Leads

Golden Globe Awards

The list of nominations for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards, the yearly precursor to the Academy Awards, have just been announced - you can find all film nominees below. The infamous Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees this morning from The Beverly Hilton. As expected, their choices this year are more mainstream but they're solid picks overall, however I won't speak for the winners yet. The King's Speech leads with 7 noms, barely over The Social Network's 6 noms. Obviously they really liked The Tourist and Alice in Wonderland, but I'm glad to see Inception earning 4 noms, too. Check out the full list!

DreamWorks Acquires a New Eminem Boxer Project: 'Southpaw'

Eminem - 8 Mile

Looks like DreamWorks really wants to get Eminem back into the movie business. Deadline reports that the studio has acquired a new project called Southpaw with writer Kurt Sutter (creator/producer of FX's "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Shield") working on the screenplay. The project is a "pitch for a star vehicle for Eminem," otherwise known as Marshall Mathers, that has a deep connection to his life like his past movie 8 Mile. Sutter explains: "In a way, this is a continuation of the 8 Mile story, but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life." Sutter is working on the script now.

Competing 'Snow White' Casting Includes Julia Roberts and More

Snow White / Evil Queen

While there's actually three different variations on Snow White in development, only two seem to be making progress. Tarsem Singh is set to direct The Brothers Grimm: Snow White for Relativity Media, while Rupert Sanders is directing Snow White and the Huntsman for Universal, but the on-camera talent is now the focus. One of the key roles includes the evil queen and both projects have big talent in their sights. Deadline confirms previously rumored Charlize Theron is negotiating for a villain role in Snow White and the Huntsman, while Julia Roberts could also have the same role in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.

Mila Kunis Joins Mark Wahlberg in Seth MacFarlane's Movie 'Ted'?

Mila Kunis

We recently learned that Mark Wahlberg will definitely be leading the R-rated comedy Ted from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. The story follows an average Boston guy who's normal except for the childhood wish he made that his teddy bear would come to life — and it did. Years later, as an adult, the bear (voiced by MacFarlane) is still around as his best friend but has become a carousing, irresponsible slacker who gets in the way of his buddy committing to adulthood and a girl he loves. The cast is now growing, as Heat Vision reports Mila Kunis (Black Swan) and Adam Scott (Step Brothers, "Party Down") are joining the comedy.

Universal & De Laurentiis Rebooting Stephen King's 'Firestarter'

Firestarter

She has the power... an evil destructive force. Variety (via JoBlo) is reporting that Universal and the Dino De Laurentiis Company are teaming up for a brand new reboot of Firestarter, which was originally based on the 1980 Stephen King novel. The movie, which earned $17 million at the box office back in 1984, starred Drew Barrymore (as seen above) in another one of her very early roles as a girl with the ability to start fires at will. No sequels were made and plot details for the reboot are being kept under wraps, except that it'll be "loosely based on the original King book, but the main character is to be reinvented with a little more edge."

Must Watch: Amusing 'The Films of Edgar Wright' Tribute Video

The Films of Edgar Wright

Briefly: One of my favorite directors is 36-year-old British geek Edgar Wright - director of three fantastic, unique, brilliant movies: Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs the World. I'm featuring this video from SlashFilm's VOTD today because Scott Pilgrim still deserves as much time in the spotlight as possible. Though you wouldn't think now would be the time for a tribute, as I'm hoping this is the beginning of a great career, it's still an awesome video, mainly because all three of his movies do kick major ass. And if you don't own it yet, Scott Pilgrim is only $17 on DVD - no excuses now! Check out the tribute video below.

The Academy's 15 Movies Chosen for the Visual Effects Shortlist

Tron Legacy

Last years Visual Effects Oscar went to Avatar, but which film will take home the high tech golden statuette this year? This past week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced (via indieWIRE) the fifteen films that they have selected as "semifinalists" for the category of Achievement in Visual Effects for the upcoming 83rd Academy Awards. If you remember, this past summer they increased the number of nominees in this category from three to five, so there are plenty to choose from this year. The fifteen movies considered are listed below, and as expected all of them except for a select few are very effects heavy flicks.

Watch This: The Assassination of Yogi Bear by the Coward Boo Boo

Yogi Bear

While many are hating on or making pamphlets warning against Eric Brevig's forthcoming live-action/CG hybrid adaptation of Hanna-Barbera's beloved cartoon Yogi Bear, one person decided to have some fun with the characters. Animator Edmund Earle was so inspired by the first trailer for the family film, that he decided to spend some late nights in the past few months crafting an alternate ending for the film. Taking a cue from Andrew Dominik's period western film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, the fate of the picnic-stealing bear is not for childrens' eyes, but it's still darkly hilarious.

First B&W Look: John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in 'The Raven'

John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary... I'm not sure how they got it, but The Huffington Post (via MTV) recently debuted the first photo (or this just a Photoshop?) of John Cusack as poet Edgar Allen Poe in James McTeigue's The Raven. The dark thriller has been shooting Europe for the last few months and is a period piece about the last five days before Poe's odd death, in which the poet is in pursuit of a serial killer whose murders mirror those in his stories. Also co-starring: Alice Eve, Luke Evans and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. It's a simple black & white photo so it's not much, but it's our first look for now.

"Begin your journey - it will set you free." Get ready for another incredibly badass visual onslaught! Warner Bros has debuted a badass behind-the-scenes featurette over on Apple for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch, featuring some interviews with Snyder and the sassy cast: Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens and even Jon Hamm, though lead actress Emily Browning was not seen at all. This featurette is packed full of footage, so watch out, but it still does look awesome. There's really no reason for anyone not to be excited as hell to see Sucker Punch especially after watching this entire video. Check it out!

Watch: First 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Trailer!

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Captain Jack is back! Disney is pulling out all the stops to get our attention focused on this new trailer. The Mouse House has unveiled the first teaser trailer on Yahoo for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth new movie in their incredibly popular pirating adventure series, this time directed by Rob Marshall. As expected, Johnny Depp is back as Jack Sparrow and he's joined by Geoffrey Rush, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Stephen Graham, Judi Dench and Gemma Ward. This actually looks surprisingly quite fun, I will say that I'm looking forward to it, but it's not too high on my list next summer. Watch and enjoy!

Final Rango Poster

Gather round y'all, we've got a story to tell. Paramount has just unveiled the final poster via Yahoo for Gore Verbinski's Rango, the upcoming animated dramedy starring Johnny Depp as a chameleon named Rango. You may remember watching the very impressive teaser trailer earlier this summer, but get ready as the full theatrical trailer hits tomorrow. I just love everything this movie has to offer. Harry Knowles' BNAT showed 10 mins of footage, and @Robogeek's description after was dead on: "Just saw many hallucinatory minutes of the deliriously bizarre, wonderful surreal Rango. Like an animated Fear & Loathing drug dream." Enjoy!
