Mary Shelly's 'Frankenstein' Gets Contemporary Update at Sony
Countless versions of the iconic monster movie Frankenstein have hit the big screen from time to time, and while recent projects have looked at peculiar twists on the classic story, Sony is looking to simply update it. Deadline reports former studio co-president Matt Tolmach who left his post to become a producer has crafted a deal to acquire a pitch for a new take on Frankenstein. Only described as a contemporary version of Mary Shelly's novel, the idea comes from writer Craig Fernandez. While his work on films like Biker Boyz and From Prada to Nada don't inspire much hope, he also recently scripted the indie Everything Must Go starring Will Ferrell.

Paul Thomas Anderson Has 'Inherent Vice' for Robert Downey Jr
Since September brought the news that The Master, the next film from one of my favorite directors, Paul Thomas Anderson, had been delayed indefinitely, some of us have been wondering what would be next for the filmmaker. It looks like we might have our answer as Vulture has learned Anderson is keen on adapting Thomas Pynchon's recent novel Inherent Vice. The story follows Larry "Doc" Sportello, a pothead private eye wandering through the Summer (and winter) of Love in 1969 Los Angeles. Even more enticing is the fact that Anderson's agency wants none other than Robert Downey Jr. to take the lead role in this new venture.

Derek Cianfrance & Ryan Gosling Find 'The Place Beyond the Pines'
After making a splash on the film festival circuit with Blue Valentine (watch the trailer here) director Derek Cianfrance and star Ryan Gosling will collaborate once again. Risky Biz caught up with the director at the Gotham Awards where he revealed his next project would be The Place Beyond the Pines. In addition, Vulture also learned from the filmmaker, at the same awards ceremony, that Gosling is on board to star in the film which is looking to shoot in the summer of 2011. However, no studio is behind the project yet, and Cianfrance says they're still in the middle of getting financing secured. That didn't stop him from teasing the story though.

Casting Tidbits: Teresa Palmer, Ricky Gervais and Giovanni Ribisi
It's just like Santa's workshop! Except it smells like Casting Tidbits and everyone looks like they wanna hurt me. First up, THR reports Joel Edgerton (The Thing remake) and the lovely Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) will star in an Australian psychological drama called Say Nothing. Actor Kieran Darcy Smith will make his feature directorial debut with this story of four friends who lose themselves in the fun of a carefree Southeast Asian holiday. However, a mystery unfolds after a fateful night when they were dancing under a full moon in Cambodia and one disappears. Darcy also wrote the film himself.

Baumbach Nabs Ben Stiller, James Franco for 'While We're Young'
After collaborating on Greenberg, it looks like writer/director Noah Baumbach and star Ben Stiller are working together yet again. Vulture reports Stiller is attached to Baumbach's next film While We're Young. In addition, James Franco (who was recently revealed to be hosting the 83rd Academy Awards with Anne Hathaway) is also attached to the story which is about a free-spirited Brooklynite twenty-something couple who inspires an uptight documentarian (Stiller) and his wife to loosen up. Of course, unexpected problems arise and hilarity ensues as only Baumbach can deliver. Find out what leading ladies may take part in the film below.

Liam Hemsworth Starring in John Singleton's Thriller 'Broken Run'
With his brother Chris Hemsworth making great strides after a small but pivotal role in Star Trek led him to the title role in Thor, actor Liam Hemsworth still has some work to do in order to catch up. Taking the romantic lead opposite Miley Cyrus in The Last Song helped his starpower a bit, but if he's going to be a star, he'll have to do much more than make out with an actress/pop star. He's on the right track by starring in Chuck Russell's remake of Arabian Nights, and now he's got another project lined up as The Wrap reports Hemsworth is attached to star in Broken Run, a political thriller which John Singleton (Four Brothers, Shaft) is set to direct.

'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' Has Nicolas Cage Very Excited
Not too many people walked away from the big screen adaptation of Marvel's flaming pile that is Ghost Rider with a smile on their face, but with Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (the duo behind Crank) at the helm of the sequel, some of us still have hope for the flaming biker. But we aren't the only ones excited about Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance as i09 recently caught up with Nicolas Cage whilst he's been out promoting his January release of Season of the Witch, and he's absolutely thrilled with the plans. Below he talks about the differences between the first film and this sequel and how Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider has changed over the years.

Alex Proyas Developing an Adaptation of Upcoming Sci-Fi 'AMP'
Another cool sci-fi project. I don't know about everyone else, but I've been waiting for Alex Proyas to get back into futuristic sci-fi like his past films Dark City and I, Robot. He's currently slated to direct Paradise Lost and Dracula Year Zero, but there is another new project he has on the horizon. Deadline reports that Summit has closed a deal for rights to adapt AMP, a "near-future" science fiction thriller written by Daniel H. Wilson (also of Robopocalypse that Spielberg is adapting). Wilson agreed to Summit's deal because he was impressed by Proyas, who is attached to produce and potentially direct this for Mystery Clock Cinema.

Watch: Mark Wahlberg's Training Promo Trailer for 'The Fighter'
Now this is an awesome trailer. It sets up and sells The Fighter perfectly as a riveting, worthwhile boxing drama. Paramount just debuted a new "promo reel", essentially a flashier trailer, on IGN (via The Playlist) for David O. Russell's The Fighter that features a rather intense training-montage-like look at Mark Wahlberg as boxer Mickey Ward. I've already seen the movie and after watching this promo trailer, I'm already pumped up to go see it again! It really is a great boxing movie, I wouldn't say better than Rocky, but it's definitely something you should check out this holiday. In the meantime, watch this promo reel below!

Sundance Doc 'Beats Rhymes & Life' Gets a Lengthy First Trailer
It was just announced a few hours ago that actor Michael Rapaport's new documentary Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest would be playing at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in the Documentary Competition category. I'm not sure how they found it, but our friends at The Film Stage dug up the first, seemingly official looking, full 5-minute long trailer for Beats Rhymes & Life. Yea if you're a fan of the group A Tribe Called Quest, you'll definitely want to check this out no matter what. Either way, get settled in for a lengthy early look at a fairly fun documentary that might be the talk of Sundance in January.

Terrence Malick's 'Tree of Life' Trailer Playing Before 'Black Swan'
Briefly: We've confirmed with Fox Searchlight that the first full trailer for Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life debuts in front of Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan this weekend. Boy is that a hell of a sweet deal if you catch Darren's brilliant new ballet thriller (that we all love). Tree of Life is Malick's long-delayed latest epic drama, due out next May 27th, starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain. We really have no clue what to expect, which is why we've been anxious to finally see a trailer. I asked when it's coming online, but was told that's still TBD - so you better get out to theaters (full city/theater listing) and see Black Swan!
