First Look: Paul Rudd+Beard in Sundance Film 'My Idiot Brother'
With things quieting down for the holidays and the Sundance Film Festival a few weeks from kicking off, I thought I'd feature some first look photos from a comedy playing at Sundance 2011. The film is called My Idiot Brother and is directed by musician / music video director Jesse Peretz, of The Château and The Ex previously who has been honing his skills directing episodes of "Important Things with Demetri Martin." The cast most importantly stars Paul Rudd, seen in the photos with bushy beard and all, as "an idealist who barges into the lives of his three sisters." We've got two photos from the film to check out (from Sundance).

Must Watch: Fantastic New 'Rango' Featurette with Johnny Depp
If anyone was on the edge with Rango, this will definitely push you all the way over. Paramount debuted a new behind-the-scenes featurette on Yahoo for Gore Verbinski's upcoming animated movie Rango, which we just featured a theatrical trailer for last week. The video shows how actors Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, Ray Winstone and Harry Dean Stanton recorded voices. This is such a fun and unique way to make an animated flick, using a small soundstage and actual interaction (Fantastic Mr. Fox did something similar), which is one of the many reasons why I think Rango looks so damn good. Enjoy!

Stephen Dorff Confirms Blade Prequel, But Not Much Progress Yet
Last summer, we reported on a rumor that actor Stephen Dorff, next seen in Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, would star in a prequel spin-off to Marvel's Blade that would be about Dorff's vampire villain Deacon Frost. It was set to be a new trilogy created by filmmaker Stephen Norrington, who directed the first Blade movie but has been struggling to get anything into production recently, including The Crow reboot (which he's no longer attached to). Anyway, we've posted updates here and there, but finally have a new quote from Dorff himself. He does shed some light on the new prequel, but it doesn't sound like it's further along than before.

Check These Out: Spectacular 'Toy Story 3' Oscar Campaign Ads
Despite the efforts of literally only a few of reviewers, Toy Story 3 has become the most universally praised film of the year. With a 99% rating at Rotten Tomatoes, it seems like you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't love the heartfelt goodbye to Andy's Toys. While Toy Story 3 is almost a surefire winner for Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards, Pixar is shooting for the moon this time. Several Oscar campaign ads have surfaced showing that Pixar wants the sequel follow in the footsteps of Beauty and the Beast and Up to become another animated film nominated for Best Picture. But this time they actually want to win!

Must Watch: First Eerie Teaser Trailer for Kevin Smith's 'Red State'
The promotion for this first venture into horror has been very rogue (with posters being auctioned off to the highest bidder and proceeds going to charity), and now Kevin Smith has released the first teaser trailer for Red State (via Smith's own Smodcast). This looks unlike anything Smith has ever done before. It contains some pretty dark imagery, a very raw shooting style/look, and is definitely quickly becoming one of my most anticipated films to see at the Sundance Film Festival, where it will premiere in January. A lot of the footage has been sped up and the only audio is of an old man creepily singing which only makes this more strange.

New Image and Poster of 'The Smurfs' Invasion of New York City
Though we've already seen a teaser trailer giving us our first look at the CG animated versions of the classic blue cartoons in Sony Pictures Animation's adaptation of The Smurfs in 3D, now two more images give us a glimpse of the characters as they invade NYC. While the first image only featured one recognizable Smurf (Papa Smurf voiced by Jonathan Winters), this new one sees the elder Smurf joined by Smurfette (Katy Perry), Grouchy Smurf (George Lopez), Gutsy Smurf (Alan Cumming), Brainy Smurf (Fred Armisen) and Clumsy Smurf (Anton Yelchin). In addition, there's also a brand new teaser poster you can see below!

More Hathaway & Sturgess Photos from Lone Scherfig's 'One Day'
If you haven't been able to tell, I'm kind of in love with Anne Hathaway but so are lots of folks. Ironically, I still haven't seen Love and Other Drugs, but another film she's in that I am looking forward to seeing and will go out of my way to watch is Lone Scherfig's One Day, an adaptation of David Nicholls' book of the same name. Hathaway and Jim Sturgess star as Emma and Dexter, who first meet at graduation from the University of Edinburgh in 1988 then proceed to reunite one day each year for the next 20 years. We ran a first look at this in September, but these new photos found on IMDb (via The Playlist) are our second look!

Watch: Hilarious Official Trailer for 'Cedar Rapids' with Ed Helms
"Laurels. Super awesome." Here comes our first look at the next potential indie comedy breakout hit? Fox Searchlight has debuted the official trailer on Apple for Miguel Arteta's Cedar Rapids - an indie comedy starring Ed Helms as a hometown insurance agent who's never left the town he grew up in until he finally went on a trip to the biggest city he's ever been to - Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Ohhh yes this looks oh so fun. It's premiering at Sundance in January and I can't wait to see it. The supporting cast includes John C. Reilly, Sigourney Weaver, Alia Shawkat, Anne Heche, Rob Corddry, Thomas Lennon and others. Watch it below!

Matt Damon Says Steven Soderbergh's Retirement is Imminent?
Back when we heard George Clooney was potentially up for leading Steven Soderbergh's adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. for the big screen, there were rumblings that the project was being viewed as the last film on which the actor and director would collaborate. Now it sounds like that train of thought may be taken a little further in that the adaptation of the 60's TV series may be Soderbergh's last film altogether. In speaking with Matt Damon, who's been working with Soderbergh's on Contagion, 24 Frames learned the director has grown weary of cinematic storytelling and will likely make good on his talk of retirement very soon.

Christian Bale Joins the Ranks of Zhang Yimou's 'Nanjing Heroes'
Though audiences are looking forward to his final turn as Batman in Chris Nolan's highly anticipated sequel The Dark Knight Rises, it looks like Christian Bale is looking at his future beyond the Caped Crusader. At a press event in Beijing (via THR) it was announced that Christian Bale is starring in the tentatively titled Nanjing Heroes, the next film for director Zhang Yimou (Hero). The story, based on Yan Geling's novel The 13 Women of Nanjing, will see Bale as a priest who shelters a group of prostitutes and female students in his church during the 1937 wartime atrocity known as "The Rape of Nanking" by Japanese troops.

'Blue Valentine' Now Opening in Limited Theaters on Wednesday
We were very happy to see Derek Cianfrance's powerful relationship drama Blue Valentine get two Golden Globe nominations, for lead actors Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, but sadly none for Cianfrance in either writing or directing. But despite all that, people still need to get out and see this wonderful film and I'm happy to support it. Just like The King's Speech, which is not-so-coincidentally also being distributed by The Weinstein Company, Blue Valentine needs extra attention, but good news as Deadline reports that TWC has moved up the released by two days to next Wednesday, December 29th, in a limited release. Go see it!
