In a romantic comedy, the pairing of your leading couple is usually very integral to gaining interest in the old trick of funny romance. There's a strange, and hopefully interesting pairing on the horizon as Deadline reports Fox has picked up rights to Jane Heller's novel An Ex To Grind with Cameron Diaz and Benicio Del Toro being attached as part of the deal. The story has Del Toro as a star athlete who for years supports the dreams of his waitress wife (Diaz), but his career is cut short by injury, turning him into a beer-swilling couch potato while she becomes a big success in business. This obviously messes with their relationship.
The wife then plans to divorce him and is horrified to discover she will have to pay alimony to maintain the slovenly lifestyle that led her to dump him. So what wacky plan does she enact to get out of her payments? She conspires to find him a new wife to get herself off the hook but when her replacement restores the man she fell for, she ends up wanting her husband back. No word on who's directing or writing yet. Del Toro and Diaz together seems like an interesting combination and at the very least this will allow Del Toro to show off his comedic chops before he jumps head first into his other comedy, the Farrelly Brothers Three Stooges.
