Casting Tidbits: Greta Gerwig, Gary Oldman & Kristen Stewart

Doc, are you telling me you built a time machine out of Casting Tidbits? First up, mumblecore fave Greta Gerwig has slowly but surely gotten more exposure to wider audiences from The House of the Devil to her appearance opposite Ben Stiller in Greenberg. Now the actress will be given a big push into the mainstream as Variety reports she's joined the cast of Ivan Reitman's sex comedy Friends with Benefits with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. Also joining this is Kevin Kline, Ophelia Lovibond and Ben Lawson. Gerwig plays Portman's brainy friend who's the first notice that Kutcher has become smitten with her friend.

Next, Heat Vision reports Julie Christie, Gary Oldman and Max Irons (son of Jeremy Irons) have landed roles for Catherine Hardwicke's upcoming gothic horror reimagining The Girl with the Red Riding Hood. Amanda Seyfried is already cast in the Catherine Hardwicke-directed project, playing a woman in a medieval village being terrorized by a werewolf and Shiloh Fernandez was just cast as an orphaned woodcutter for whom Seyfried falls, much to the displeasure of her family. Irons will play Henri, the son of a blacksmith who, through an arrangement, is to marry Seyfried's character. Christie would play Seyfried's grandmother, whose favorite pastime is knitting with a pair of silver (hint, hint) needles and Oldman would play Father Soloman, a man whose title is the Witchfinder General and whose job is to find and kill the werewolf. This project just might end up being worth a damn.

Finally, through the E! Online rumor mill comes word that Kristen Stewart might be up for replacing Angelina Jolie in Wanted 2, the sequel to the 2007 comic book movie. Apparently she was approached as a possible replacement and has met with director Timur Bekmambetov at least once to discuss the potential. Stewart's character would be a new, young, ass-kicking assassin in the established fraternity. However, it looks like this has a slim-to-no chance of this actually happening, or if the Wanted sequel will even get off the ground soon. Stewart will be busy shooting the final installments of Twilight as soon as October and the Wanted sequel was scheduled to start filming in August, so those timetables just don't match up well. Anyway, take this all with a grain of salt for now, and stay tuned as this story develops.
