Dimension Films Already Working on Piranha 3D: The Sequel

August 23, 2010

Piranha 3D

Despite that the boob-filled, bloody, hard R-rated tongue-in-cheek horror romp Piranha 3D opened at #6 at the box office this weekend with only $10 million, the next few weeks combined with DVD/Blu-Ray sales will ensure the film gets a profit. Of course that means Dimension Films is already interested in a sequel and today they announced today (via a press release) the immediate start of development on Piranha 3D: The Sequel. So where exactly where will waters turn red next? Well, SlashFilm recalls in recent interviews that director Alexandre Aja already has an idea for a piranha feeding fest at the Full Moon Party in Thailand.

Honestly this seems like a ploy to try to get more people into theaters to see Piranha 3D, but since critics are loving the campy, over-the-top underwater massacre (it stands at 81% on Rotten Tomatoes), that may not be a bad thing. I'm still going to test the the rampant nudity and blood-filled waters when I get a chance, and if things end up getting crazier in Thailand (which is where shit gets nuts since The Hangover 2 is rumored to head there, too) then we're in for plenty of girls and piranhas going wild. Producer Mark Canton says: "We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3D, but cheering for it. And it's fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can't wait to get to work on the sequel." Good?

But even if it does make a profit, it wont make a profit according to creative bookkeeping.

so its gonna be milked, for all its worth?

Hey, Xerxex Are you a guy or a chick?

total dude. But to save time I haven't seen Piranha 3-D nor will I, but its cool if others enjoy it. I'm not gonna insult the people who went to see it and had a blast watching people get merked by prehistoric teethy fish. Boobs in 3-D sounds good, but I'm a steadfast anti-3-D hater. Therefore I won't see it.

Piranha 3D was loads of fun. Exactly what I expected. Thought the 3D was wasted, I agree with Xerxex there. But still, excited for the sequel. This is the kind of movie Snakes On A Plane wished it was.
  • Piranha 3D was a fun over the top gory "drive in" movie. The 3D sucked!!! It looked too much like a 3D conversion as in "Clash of the Titans" only Piranha is teeny bit better. I was expecting a real digital 3D film like "Step Up 3D" which was enjoyable for the 3D effects.

i went because i had nothing better to do. This movie was hilarious. I don't get grossed out by gore and violence but there were a few moments that shocked even me. Totally recommend it. ( too bad Kelly brook won't be in the sequel)
  • They must know they can crank out a sequel without breaking the bank. Will be curious to see how the film does in week #2 at the box office. WOM should be really strong ...

You gotta love the marketing campaign for this movie. I am pumped though!
  • I thought the movie was awesome! I loved the original and this was a good take on it. The only thing I hated about it was the 3-D. 3-D always seems to look out of focus, it takes away the color, and it's such a waste of money. Was a little dissapointed that they didn't give it a 2-D option at the theaters. And why make a sequel in Thailand? They already left it with a good sequel-starter there at the lake!
