John Carter of Mars

With this summer season coming to an end, movie studios are now working on scheduling the summer of 2012 full of blockbusters. ComingSoon reports that Disney has scheduled Andrew Stanton's upcoming epic live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars for release on June 8th, 2012. I originally predicted that they would schedule it for the late December spot that Tron and Avatar had, but it looks like they want to open it as a big summer blockbuster around the same weekend as X-Men: First Class opens next summer (2011). Disney also scheduled a 2012 release for Tim Burton's Frankenweenie movie.

Frankenweenie, the feature-adaptation of Burton's stop-motion short, was written by John August and is being directed by Tim Burton (as far as we know, since details are a bit sketchy). Disney has scheduled that for release on March 9th, 2012, a week after Dr. Seuss' The Lorax lands in theaters. John Carter of Mars, which I can't frickin' wait to see, stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church and Willem Dafoe. It's being directed by Pixar alum Andrew Stanton who is making his live-action debut.

We'll definitely be keeping you updated on both of these movies as production continues. Frankenweenie is currently in development with stop-motion work beginning soon. John Carter of Mars has finished shooting in both London and Utah and is currently beginning its very lengthy post-production process (since it has a lot of CGI). I'm already looking forward to both of these, they should be good! Stay tuned here for updates.

I had a feeling John Carter would come out in the summer, since there's the potential that December 2012 will see the release of The Hobbit (unlikely but still possible). As for Taylor, if Stanton thinks he's up to the task, that's fine by me. Plus, Wolverine is hardly the measuring stick to use for anybody's talent given the clusterbleep it was (thanks to Fox and the director).

Taylor Kitsch is going to carry a 200 million dollar movie. Sorry, that's not gonna work. Did anyone see him in Wolverine?!

It's so depressing that Taylor Kitsch played one of the best TV characters of the last decade for years yet so many nerds still think of him as being "from Wolverine." I know it's scary, but sometime you might want to think about expanding out of your geek media comfort zone.

Can't wait for this, pissed its not coming out for nearly 2 years. And as for Kitsch he'll be fantastic, as Riggins in FNL he has consistantly impressed. Maybe "The Bang Bang Club" will show his talent to those who keep missing it.

    fuck yes!
