Just last month, we found out Steven Spielberg had finally chosen War Horse, the adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's 1982 novel, as his next project. Moving swiftly towards production, The Playlist reports that Spielberg has already "pretty much locked" young British actor Eddie Redmayne for the lead role in the epic tale of a friendship between a boy and his horse, who become separated but continue to be intertwined as they try to survive the horrors of WWI. This is the first of any casting news for the project we've heard, but The Playlist has proven itself to be accurate time and time again, so this should be all confirmed soon.
If you're unfamiliar with Redmayne, the 28 year-old actor has had small roles in The Good Shpeherd and The Other Boelyn Girl, but first broke out in Savage Grace with Julianne Moore. This could be a career-defining role in the making for Redmayne, much akin to Spielberg's use of Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun (though there's quite an age difference) and with this kind of drama, we can probably expect the same kind of emotional epic. As much as I love Spielberg's tentpole science fiction/action bonanza's, I also enjoy his more low key dramas like Munich and The Color Purple. Stay tuned as we expect more casting soon!
