Apparently the latest little bit of viral/grassroots marketing that Fox Searchlight is doing for the upcoming Duplass Brothers' comedy, Cyrus, involves these potentially offensive t-shirts. Printed clearly on the front is a quote from the film: "Seriously, Don't F**k My Mom." According to Anne Thompson at indieWIRE, and Searchlight themselves, these shirts have become quite the hot commodity, although I've personally never actually seen any before. If you dig the shirt, you can buy one for $24.95 over in the official Fox Searchlight shop. I saw Cyrus at Sundance and it's a great film worth seeing, but will this actually help build more buzz?
For those wondering what the heck this has to do with the movie, first you've got to watch the trailer, second let me explain the plot. Basically, John C. Reilly plays a dorky, lonely guy who recently divorced. One day he meets Marisa Tomei's character and falls in love with her, but she has a grown up son, played by Jonah Hill, who still lives with her and has a very peculiarly personal relationship with his mom. Of course, he gets in the way and things get even crazir when Reilly tries to move in with her. "Seriously, don't f**k my mom," is just one of many hilarious quotes in the movie. Cyrus will hit theaters starting on June 18th this summer.
Cyrus was written and directed by the Duplass Brothers of The Puffy Chair and Baghead previously. It was shot predominantly improvised by the main actors and is quite hilarious. For more, visit the official website.
