It's so fluffy, right? After taking the #1 spot at the box office over the weekend, Deadline has confirmed that Universal's animated comedy Despicable Me will be getting a sequel, which is already in development at Illumination Entertainment, the animation company behind the movie. Despicable Me was the first big hit Universal has had in a while and they're looking to really build the brand into something much bigger, at the level of Pixar, as Illumination and producer Chris Meledandri are also developing two short films featuring the lovable Minions as well as the sequel (and a whole bunch of other upcoming animated films). Read on!
Deadline says about the sequel: "Despicable Me 2 talks are already underway among the studio, Meledandri, and writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio." I haven't had the chance to see the movie yet, but I have heard some great things and seen lots of positive tweets all weekend (Jeremy gave it 7.5), so it looks like everyone is enjoying it, which is definitely why it went on to make $56 million. I'm honestly sick and tired of seeing those effin' Minions everywhere, on the TV, all of the internet, but they were also key to making it a success, which is why those short films should go over well. Anyone else see this movie over the weekend and love it?
In addition to the Despicable Me sequel, Illumination Entertainment is also working on the live-action CG hybrid Hop starring Russell Brand as the Easter Bunny, due out next April, an adaptation of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax to follow-up Horton Hears a Who, a Where's Waldo film (probably animated), and the Addams Family animated film that Tim Burton is working on and has been in the news recently. After the success they had this past weekend, it looks like Illumination now has a solid line-up of new projects ahead of them.
