He may win an Oscar in a few weeks, but even if he doesn't, Jeremy Renner has had a fantastic breakout year. He was rumored to potentially play Hawkeye in Marvel's Thor, but that never panned out. However, he has a few other big deals in the works. NY Times did a profile on some of this year's Oscar nominees and talked a little bit with Renner, who revealed that he's cast in James McTeigue's Raven and also that he's "in talks with Universal and director Peter Berg about taking the lead role in Battleship." He's also had "no fewer than five meetings to star in another project," but won't reveal what it is. Maybe that was Hawkeye?
As for The Raven, the next project from V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue, the film is inspired by the famous Edgar Allen Poe poem of the same name, The Raven follows Poe and the last five days before his death. As McTeigue explains: "It's basically set in 1850s Baltimore. The logline would be: an amalgamation of Poe's stories crossed with Se7en. It's about a serial killer loose in 1850s Baltimore." We don't know exactly what role Renner will be playing, but it's probably the lead role of Edgar Allen Poe. NY Times also revealed that Ewan McGregor is in talks to co-star and shooting should take place soon.
As for Battleship, Renner says that he has to choose between either taking on that role or the other secret project that he's had five meetings about, since both of them are expected to shoot in the summer and he can't do both. I'm not sure what the other project is (anyone heard anything?), but I'm always up for seeing Renner in anything, he's such a solid actor. With these two big starring roles coming up, it definitely looks like Renner is ready to hit the mainstream following The Hurt Locker. And if he wins an Oscar on the 7th, it'll only help solidify his presence even further. We'll keep you updated on everything Renner - stay tuned!
